Good read. Not great.

In "The Flander's Panel" the mystery is built up well using the chess pieces, but I found that the players Julia, Cesar, Munoz etc are all flat with no personality to their characters. I found them to be pretty dry and unbelievable. I didn't feel close to Julia or Munoz or any of the "hero" characters. I wouldn't have cared less if Julia was killed off in the end.

Moreover, after the heavy buildup, the finale falls flat too. There is no substance to the story, why the mystery was there in the first place. I think my expectations were set very high after having read other "chess" mysteries before.
Take Katherine Neville's "The Eight". Now THAT's what I call a great read !

I am picking up a Carlos Ruiz Zafon now, to wash away this "lacking" feeling.

I really enjoyed this book right up to the ending, which was really cliched. The working back the chess game from the position on the board was genius.

I'm reading The Club Dumas now and really like it too.

I really liked The Club Dumas. It got me to read the The Three Musketeers, which was such a surprise and fantastic book. I'll always have to thank this book for pushing me to read the other.

It's also interesting to compare The Club Dumas with the movie made from it, The Ninth Gate...but now I've hijacked this Flanders Panel discussion into a Club Dumas discussion....
