Chriselle There seemed like there was still time to do so.

Nina He knew that if he went, they would just catch up with the both of them. He gave himself up so she could have a chance to get away.

Haylee' Marie YES he could of went with her but like everyone is saying they would catch them both! Then they both would be dead... he stayed behind so she could stay alive and they would be all over him so they would be distracted and forget Lena was running

l There wasn't any time. While Lena was climbing the fence, Alex knew he wouldn't make it in time, and if he had started to climb, Lena would have slowed down to help him over and neither of them would have made it out. He wanted her to have a chance.

Sheyenne Alex didn't try to move because if he did then they would have chased them both into the wilds which would have put not only Alex and Lena in danger but also the people of the wilds. Either that or they would have electrified the fence and killed them both. So with the police distracted trying to capture Alex he gave Lena a chance to get away safely (my heart just inflated in my chest give me a second to go catch it.......) I personally think Alex had a plan of getting out to be with Lena. Also, when Alex and Lena went into the wilds for the first time he taught her how to read the map on the trees so he didn't just abandon Lena.

Cookie If he climbed with Lena, then they both could have been shot, but he stayed behind as an easy target(sacrifice), so Lena could live.

Fiona Curtis i know everyone's saying he did it to distract the police, but that doesn't make sense! there were WAY too many police officers to kill just Alex! in any real life situation the police would have split up and gone after Lenah as well! :( I just don't understand

True, but the fence had electricity going through. The police couldn't follow Lena. They aren't allowed into the Wilds anyway. They though they would have broken Lena, with Alex's death.

I thought that too - that they could have both made it, but I think they wanted Alex more than Lena. They know all about her and probably figure she'll just die on her own. Alex was the wild card, so to speak. They didn't know anything about him and quite possibly suspected that he was an Invalid.
He gave himself up as a distraction, knowing they wanted him more than her.
Had he gone with her, they probably would have ignored the order not to follow, at least for a little while. Alex wasn't willing to take the chance that they might or might not follow both of them and risk Lena getting killed. (Aww, Alex....) Don't forget, Alex isn't sure of anything and he's mostly just thinking about her. If he thinks there's even a chance for her to make it without him, he's going to take it.

@Cookie: They probably could have disabled the fence relatively easily.
And if I'm remembering right, they only weren't allowed to go hunt them officially. Going a few miles passed the fence is probably allowed in situations like that.
Besides, if they had the dogs, they likely wouldn't need to go that far.
