Just finished this. It is very good, increasingly sad but it ends on a note of hope. however, I can't help wondering what the final chapter would be if it were written now. The factions that tear the country apart and are each greeted with hope yet turn out to be increasingly repressive are still there. How are Laila, Tariq and the family doing now?

Joy I read both Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. Also so the movie Kite Runner. By far the better book was A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I read a thousand splendid suns first and kite runner second. I don't think it really matters. Loved them both!!

Ashtrid Fernandes As a TYBA student I would like to know why should i read A Thousand splended suns?

Joy Pierce Beautifully written book. I loved it! It is heavy though. I love books that make me think beyond my little corner of the world.

Licha Loved the book. The relationship between the two women was believable and made your heart ache for them. An unforgettable story.

Kite Runner is a book you will never forget. Read it!

Tanuja Thapliyal It is one of the finest I have ever read. A must read to anyone.

Edward Batres Four words: the best book ever.

Cathy One of my favourite ever books. It shows the strength and resilience of women in adversity. Hard to believe it was written by a man but kudos to him. I loved the Kite Runner but this was even better. Powerful and insightful!

I agree completely!

Charu Garg Being a new reader, i was skepteiical of reading this book at first fearing the language and comprehensibility..but the book was so easy in terms of language...and the way the plight of the women in the evolving years of Afghanistan has been protrayed...it is so engulfing. You end up feeling lucky to be born in free India, although we still have a long way to go when we talk about women empowerment. But still i feel Khalid has done amazingly well for the way he portrayed Afghanistan, and the two women. eye opener for everyone.
Must read for everyone.

Lakshmi This is one book that totally changed my outlook of the world. This book made me realize how lucky I am, to be born in a free country. It made me understand the reality of the world we live in.It showed me how inferior our problems and our worries are, when compared to their battles with fate.I read this book when I was 14 and from then on I have been more considerate to the people around me rather than being engulfed by my own problems as we usually tend to be.

Joy I read both books and liked them both but could relate more to Splendid asunder. The author will be here Sunday with copies of his new book. I am so excited to be able to see and hear him speak. He will be here in Birmingham Alabama.

Jihan Just finished reading this book last night. After two weeks of slow reading, in the end I managed to finish until the last sentence. It's a good book, but I'm too emotional to share what I think about the story. I will let Mariam and Laila linger for a while in my mind, before I let them go. I'm happy for Laila and Tariq but I.., okay I cannot continue, I'm about to cry when I think about Mariam's fate. Sigh.

Irene Hi Jihan, just need to send you a big hug! I felt the same when I finished also.

Kathy I liked The Kite Runner better, but this one brought home the idea of how grateful I am to live here in the US and not in some other country. I do not know or understand how women survive this type life, but I guess they feel this is their belief and way of life.

Noora Mansoor Chami wrote: "I think Muslim women around the world are going through lots and lots bad and dreadful things than we Buddhists, Christians and Hindus. While we are enjoying our life with our freedom they are givi..."

Chami, I think u've got the wrong impression on Muslim women, who r in fact given sooo much respect and honour in their religion.

Meghan Sibley I think this book defiantly is an eye opener to what some women are going through. Reading it you just get so attached to the characters and they feel like they are your friends. This book didn't sugarcoat situations and even though parts are heartbreaking I truly think that this book is an amazing read!

Stephanie Hornecker Horrible things happen to everyone everywhere... remember it's all about perspective and we shouldn't be quick to generalize and stereotype a country or a religion. This is an amazing book that serves as a window to a world many don't know about. I am in no way denying the fact that these horrible things happen and we should use stories like this to be more appreciative of what we have.

I think this is my favorite of Hosseini's books!
