Verity (exlibros) Linda and Michelle: I like your tickers on the challenge list so much, I think I might follow suite.

message 252: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you! They are a fun way to show your total. I thought it was a good idea as well... :)

message 253: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Confessions of a Shopaholic for 15 points as my book with a character close to my age (challenge #1).

message 254: by Liz (new)

Liz Anyone know if it's too late to join the challenge?

message 255: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Nope! We'd love it if you'd join!

message 256: by Liz (new)

Liz YAYS! I shall work on populating a list, and it shall help me procrastinate :)

message 257: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Question...Would Middlesex count for "medical condition"? I'm not sure if you would classify being transgendered as a medical condition, but what do you guys think?

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
i wouldn't consider it as such..but if you really can't find something else than I'll allow it.

message 259: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) Do we include all of January or only books read since Jan. 21? I'm only asking because I read several books including Jane Eyre and Bourne Identity the first couple of weeks of January.

message 260: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I believe it's only the books since January 21.

message 261: by [deleted user] (new)

That's what I was told as well.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I believe we said since January 21st.

message 263: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) sounds good.

message 264: by Liz (new)

Liz Kelsey wrote: "Question...Would Middlesex count for "medical condition"? I'm not sure if you would classify being transgendered as a medical condition, but what do you guys think?"
I suppose it would be not so much medical as psychological, perhaps. On a side note, can anyone think of an author born in April?

message 265: by Liz (new)

Liz Right after I posted that, I found one--Terry Pratchett! I've been wanting to reaed some of his books.

message 266: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) Another question...if we are having a hard time thinking of a book we used sparknotes for in High School, can we use one we used Sparknotes for in college? Like Metamorphosis (both Kafka and Ovid) or Voltaire's Candide (wanted to read but didn't have time that semester).

message 267: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
yeah that's totally fine.

message 268: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) It seems like I've been reading a lot of books that have been adapted to movies but they aren't out on video yet (and I don't go to theaters)...very frustrating. Also I keep reading books that are around 600 pages.

message 269: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I just finished the Diving Bell and the Butterfly yesterday for a book that is related to your field of study. It was really really really good! And the movie is interesting too. (All the speech majors got together and watched it earlier this week)

I've finished Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day but I still need to watch the movie to count it.

message 270: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen oooo lynn, i should use that for my "book/movie" one! i have to read that for class next week. i'm glad it's good! i'm looking forward to it.

message 271: by Allison (new)

Allison oh gosh...another challenge.
i've got one going on in another goodreads group i'm in, but i can never say no..
it looks like some of them may double up...
i'll post my list in a bit.

message 272: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Twilight for 10 points as my read a book and then watch the movie adaptation(challenge #4).

message 273: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Bridget Jones's Diary for 10 points as my book set in a place you've always wanted to visit/live (challenge #9).

message 275: by [deleted user] (new)

I updated my list to include One for the Money as my book where a woman is the main character for 5 points (challenge #6) and Lover Eternal as my book that involves a medical condition for 10 points (challenge #5- the main characters mate has leukemia).

message 276: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Romeo and Juliet for 15 points as my book I was supposed to read in high school but instead used SparkNotes for (challenge #8).

message 277: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Would The Lovely Bones work for "Valentines Day: read a book with the word heart or love in it"?

message 278: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
mmm..I'm a yes and a no..but sure go for it.. :)

message 279: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've been trying really hard to think of a book I skipped for school (high school or college) and I don't think I ever have, I was kinda a dork snob and looked down on people who didn't read the books. I saw a few other people had similar questions but I never found answers. My brother is in high school so maybe I could read a book that he is assigned but I never was?

message 280: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) Ever watch the movie instead of reading the book and then writing a book report on it? :)

I think this was answered before somewhere but I can't remember..but basically what I said was that you could pick one that was required at other schools but not your own..so your brothers would work.

message 282: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) ok thanks, I skimmed but there are a lot of posts of this so it is possible I missed it.

message 283: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
its not a problem. There was a lot of posts going on everywhere about it so I'd imagine it would be easy to skip over.

message 284: by Kristen (last edited Apr 21, 2009 04:15PM) (new)

Kristen..this is kind of confusing..but we started it in this thread and then soon after found an easier way to do the adding up of points. So this thread is for general questions or posting updates of a particular book you just read. The other thread in this folder that says "REAL official challenge" is the "official one".

I should change the name of this thread lol. No wonder everyone is confused! My bad everyone..I slacked.

message 286: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Haha, no problem. Easy cut and paste!

message 287: by Michelle Kay (new)

Michelle Kay (dinosaur) | 56 comments just to make sure.

i am NOT to post again on the other school year thread.
just to update my current thread.
and it will be counted in the next leaderboard. right???

message 288: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
correct! You just update that with your total on the bottom. This is just used if you want to post what you just finished or have questions.

haha I totally never saw this. Yeah..I was on vacation for a week or so..I would have answered even if I was busy with work..but alas I was in another country. lol. sorry about that..next time I'll post a thread (I think I randomly mentioned it in a thread..who knows though) saying that I'm gone or something..haha like an out of the office response. :)

message 290: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) I just finished book 3 of the Wrinkle in Time series (I also read book 2) but I read book 1 before the challenge started. Only book 1 is listed on the website you gave, but all of the series has been banned or challenged at several schools due to L'Engle's promotion of Christian Universalism. Can I count it, or does it have to have the title on that list?

message 291: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen David, what do you think of them? They're some of my favorites.

that's fine.

message 293: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie so i have a question about the challenge.... since there's been this talk of doing a summer challenge and such... when is the school year challenge ending? Are we just going to scrap it? If so, can I use the books I haven't read on the summer challenge?

message 294: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Lynn, That's a good question. Jamie and I haven't made any definite decisions, but we might keep the challenge going and you'll be allowed to use any unread books for the school year and summer challenge. I'd feel bad scrapping it completely because some people don't want to do fall challenge, some people are almost done, and some people are just having fun. But we haven't set anything in stone. We'll send out a message with the plan later.

message 295: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I personally love the idea of a summer challenge, it'll give me new motivation haha. Plus I have my own little mini challenge each summer, which is why I hate The Fountainhead so much, it took me a whole month to read and when you only have three months that's a lot of time to spend on one book. If I really liked it it wouldn't have been such a big deal but I resent it now as well as thinking it wasn't that great... it ruined my plans! lol

message 296: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Good in Bed as my book written by a GoodReads author for 15 points (challenge #4).

message 297: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Tahleen, The Fountainhead took me a while too, but I really enjoyed it. I immediately thought I needed to re-read again since the last parts are somewhat hazy because I'd started school by the time I finished. Someday I will read it again.

message 298: by Liz (new)

Liz I recently finished Beyond Ragnarok for 5 points (author I'd never read before).

message 299: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Oh go, this challenge is huuuuge

message 300: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie just finished Salvation on Sand Mountain for a topic you wish you could have studied. It was really really interesting!
