William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments GAH! How far into the series should I go? I must admit, the only sci-fi fantasy series that I gobbled up in its entirety is Foundation.

I'm hunting for a hardcover of Dune now. DOES THE BOOK HAVE STING!?

avert your eyes!

message 4452: by Cas (new)

Cas Blomberg (casblomberg) | 15 comments What's Foundation? Do I need to hide in shame, now?

message 4453: by William (new)

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments I always hide in shame, and can still be social while doing so! Thanks, Internet!

Foundation: The Foundation Series was by Asimov. Even when it isn't at its best, it is always interesting and compelling.

message 4454: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments William the only Dune book I really like is...Dune. It's a classic...the rest of the series is like he or his publisher said, "wow, people liked that one, let's cash in".

At least that's my take. I like Dune, read several of the others and moved on.

Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "William the only Dune book I really like is...Dune . ..."

Strong agreement!
The original "Dune" was pretty good (I reckoned it 'very good' when I first read it, aged about 16) but Frank Herbert's own sequels faded rapidly, and when his son took over I lost interest entirely. Maybe its time someone had another go at filming it??

message 4456: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments If you mean Dune itself the (old) Science Fiction Channel did a miniseries that was (I think) far superior to the movie. Sadly it's very expensive (at least the copies I've found are) as I suppose it's not being made available now. My guess would be that like Babylon 5 it's caught in some kind of ownership debacle.

message 4457: by Cas (new)

Cas Blomberg (casblomberg) | 15 comments Maybe its time someone had another go at filming it??

Would love to see someone give Dune another go instead of one more remade fairy tale.

message 4458: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments Lol Cas, I am unfamiliar with the foundation series too so don't feel too bad. Although I have read some of Asimov's work and enjoyed it immensely.

message 4459: by Noel (new)

Noel Coughlan (noel_coughlan) | 2 comments Hi all,

I'm Noel. I am Irish. I have been a fan of science fiction and fantasy for as long as I can remember. My favorite books include the Book of the New Sun, Roadside Picnic, Dune, and Solaris.

I also write epic fantasy and some SF.

message 4460: by Cas (new)

Cas Blomberg (casblomberg) | 15 comments Jeanette,
My husband had read my comment and waited patiently all evening to tell me all about it. He wasn't even that condescending, well, not too much, lol.

Guess I need to add it to my list. I just checked, and I don't think I've read anything by Asimov. Clarke, yes, but nothing from good ol' Isaac. What would you recommend from him?

message 4461: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Noel, welcome.

message 4462: by Noel (new)

Noel Coughlan (noel_coughlan) | 2 comments Thanks Mike.

message 4463: by William (new)

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments Welcome, Noel! And anyone else I missed!

As for Asimov, I, Robot is a great read and in some ways the precursor to most of his major work. You'll know if you enjoy him after you've finished that short novel.

message 4464: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments Yes, I Robot indeed! The 3 basic laws are the same but it's nothing like the movie staring Will Smith. The book totally captured my imagination!

I also like Anne McCaffrey. She has a wide range of books. Her dragon singer books were great.

message 4465: by William (new)

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments Movie staring Will Smith? THERE IS NO MOVIE STARING WILL SMITH OF I, ROBOT. CLEARLY THIS IS AN ILLUSION.

Same for I am Legend. No movie there, either!

Did Anne McCaffery do Dragon Riders? That was huge when I was in high school but I missed the boat on that one. I was on a Ken Follett kick at the time.

As for the three laws, my Mum used to work for the Army's logistics division... and when she went to their robotics facility they literally had those laws posted. How awesome is that!?

message 4466: by Jay (new)

Jay Spence | 2 comments Hello everyone! My name is Jason Spencer, half of The Brothers Spencer and I have been here for awhile trying to figure out how goodreads works lol. New to online groups and such. I love it, everyone is communicating, reading and being creative! My kind of place! I am from the first state of Delaware, love science fiction, dramas, thrillers and such when it comes to novels.

message 4467: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments Yes, the Dragon Riders of Pern :)

message 4468: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Jay welcome.

William...clearly you are laboring under the illusion that just because a movie has the same title/name as a book and claims to have been..."inspired by"...said book, the movie should resemble the book.

No. As a matter of fact I'm fairly sure that there is some form of penalty for a movie maker whose movie actually tells the same story as the book the movie is supposed to be based on.

message 4469: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments I have a question. If we're reading The Dragon's Path right now, will we later read others in the series? Or is this just an appetite wetter?

message 4470: by Mark (new)

Mark Henwick | 67 comments Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "I'm fairly sure that there is some form of penalty for a movie maker whose movie actually tells the same story as the book..."

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 58 comments Okay, it appears my other post was deleted because I uh, defended myself here. Let me give it another shot.

1.) Mike, don't be condescending.

2.) Children of Men and Watchmen were different from this sources and they benefited greatly from it. So a movie can be different and be awesome.

3.) the films of I Robot and most recent version of I am Legend were terrible movies. Given they made needless changes to narrative and suffered from it greatly, their poor quality is baffling.

I wonder if this post of mine will be deleted like my other one...

(additional - my post wasn't deleted, I'm just a MORON who doesn't know how to scroll to the next page! DANGIT. I WAS DOING SO WELL AT WINNING THE INTERNET VIA FORUMS ARGUMENT!)

message 4472: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Jun 09, 2014 08:43AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments ...I'm not sure what you mean....

If you mean my movie/book comment I was simply being humorous, truth often is. I know there have been good movies that stay close to the book, they are the exception to the rule but they "do happen".

I didn't mean to up set, but generally speaking my posts tend to go for the laugh pretty often.

Hello! My name is Giorgia and I'm really bad at introductions, just putting it out there.
I'm 24 and I'm from Italy. I love reading, so much that I never go anywhere without carrying something to read. Fantasy is one of my favourite genres so I hope to find some great books through this group.
I guess now comes the part where I tell you about my all time favourites. That's tough, I just can't choose. I suppose that having grown up with Harry Potter I will always have a special place in my heart for J.K. Rowling and that my family would disown me for not mentioning Tolkien (I love The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and I swear that I'll get around to finish The Hobbit) .
The last fantasy novel that I've really enjoyed was...???... I think it actually was A Dance with Dragons... so you know any suggestion is welcomed.
Currently I'm reading Shadow Kin by MJ Scott (I just can't find the words to say how bad it is. So so bad. But it bothers me not to finish a book that is lent by a friend) and the much lovelier Pane e Tempesta by S Benni, an amazing Italian author.

message 4476: by Niall (new)

Niall Singers | 1 comments Hi all

My name's Niall, but most people call me Tibbs ('mister' is optional). I was born into a scifi/fantasy obsessed family in London, UK, in 1970 and was raised on a diet of Heinlein, Tolkein, Haldeman and Burroughs, among many others.

Recent fancies have included Iain M Banks' Culture novels and Stephen King's Dark Tower series (I like to explore, so expansive works are often attractive to me).

I'm a writer by trade and often fall behind on my reading, so I'm hoping this group will give me the push I need to get back in the saddle (work permitting).

message 4478: by Nick (last edited Jun 13, 2014 07:52PM) (new)

Nick Wyckoff | 11 comments My name is Nick, I'm an aerospace and systems engineering engineer who has worked in the Space research, defense and security fields. I work long hours and end up on travel a lot.

As a result i don't get to read as much as I did in my youth, but i tend toward harder science fiction and generally find stuff that was written in the 60s, 70s and 80s the most enjoyable. Having said that, i did accept a challenge to try to read all of the star wars books once, it was....a mixed bag.

I alternate between reading historical/trade related books and science fiction, but don't dip into the fantasy realm too much. I did recently start writing and have published one novel with several more nearly complete. I discovered that my time to read is directly related to how much time i spend writing, so it's tough for me to stay current on new releases.

message 4480: by Rudi (new)

Rudi Bracaglia | 6 comments If one more person tells me they didn't bother reading "The Lord of the Rings" because "it's stupid why didn't they just use the Eagles??" I might have to have a temper tantrum. Because OMG.

message 4481: by Rudi (new)

Rudi Bracaglia | 6 comments In a happy note, I loved Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart. Completely awesome look at a superhero/mutant type drama

Wow. Did you read them all? I can't even find them all, much less read them all! Kudos to you.

message 4483: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments I have read a few of the Star Wars books and I actually liked them. Not the ones based on the movies though.

Hello, Scotty here,

I'm a reader, writer, publisher, and (struggling) marketer. You all have dynamite posts--and that's not a euphemism.
Just looking to step outside my comfort zone and make friends, find wise advice, and discover new reads. If you can help with any of these, friend me. (Forgive the rhyme, it was an accident.)

message 4485: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) Hi, I'm GG (Please, don't ask what it stands for).

Like most people here, I'm a reader before all (and sometimes a writer). I love sci-fi and fantasy so when I saw this group I said, "Why not?" :P

For the last year and a half I mostly read self-pub so I may not be able to follow most discussions here, but I'm hoping to discover more books worth reading.

Becca Hardy (severxance) | 6 comments Hi everyone. My name is Becca and I have been in love with science fiction and fantasy for as long as I can remember. I especially love epic fantasies like The Lord of the Rings and pretty much anything science fiction related as long as it is smart. I am also a writer.

message 4488: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments Welcome Becca! Glad you decided to join us. You sound a lot like myself and many of us here. Kindred spirits are always welcomed with alacrity! :-D

Jeanette Revie | 56 comments Hello Michelle! Well, your book certainly sounds interesting! Have you ever read Dean Koontz novel called "Watchers"? It's about a genetically enhanced dog. I loved it, it was a great read. 17 years old and written a book already, I admit, I'd love a good perusal!

Will M. (oneandonlywm3) | 4 comments Hello, I'm 18 years old, and I really enjoy Fantasy and Sci-Fi novels. Few of my favorites are Ready Player One, Mistborn Trilogy, and A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm planning to read a lot more from now on, and possibly widen my favorites shelf even more. Feel free to add me, and talk to me in the process. Making friends is pretty much one of my few goals in joining this group, alongside discovering amazing Fantasy/Sci-Fi novels.

message 4497: by Sanjana (last edited Jun 25, 2014 04:03AM) (new)

Sanjana Hi, fellow readers.

I'm reading Brave New World now. Excited to see where it's headed. Reading chapter 5 now.

I recently read Foundation. Was underwhelmed by it. :\

I have tried and failed to read LOTR several times :P Never been able to get past The Birthday. But I feel this year's the year I conquer it. Got gifted the box set and I'm determined to give them a go again!

Love the Song of Ice and Fire series.
