Egle (aphek) | 4 comments hei there! Egle from Estonia. At the moment i`m taking a brake from work to raise my baby.
Reading fantasy and sci-fi books when the little one is sleeping, give my imagination and spirit enough boost for to NOT become a typical diperstory-telling depressed and tired mom among the others.
I just hope my kindle can handle all those intense working hours ;)

Definitely! I just got onto summer break so I'm finishing up the book soon (halfway there now) but once it's over my book life will come to a screeching halt, haha.

Ryan Abe. (wagonburner) | 21 comments Egle, have you read any of the Lost Fleet Series? Or maybe Dresden Files? The Iron Druid is also pretty good. But, if you don't have the time for A billion books like I know you won't, (having a 4 year old myself) try oldmans war by John Scalzi. Amazing.

I have not read those, Ryan.. and i really appreciate you recommending those books. Im gonna add those to my to-read list. Starting with the iron druid..that seems like a perfect fit for me. Thank you :)

Ryan Abe. (wagonburner) | 21 comments Nice choice. The main character is hilarious to read and you'll love Oberon. He's cool.

message 4360: by Ikebukuro (new)

Ikebukuro | 2 comments Hi, I'm Ikebukuro and I like SF and Fantasy, but also contemporary, non fiction, thrillers, classics... I try to read various books and to stay curious. Otherwise I like travels, music and art in general.

message 4361: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (littlelexa) | 27 comments Hello everyone! My name is Alexa from Spain, I'm recently out of the uni and in the look for a new job, so I have lots of time to read and I've decided to tackle most of the fantasy books in my ever growing To Read shelf.

Besides fantasy, I usually read lots of urban fantasy and YA novels and I have a soft spot for romance (they're my guilty pleasure!) When I'm not reading I can be found playing videogames, watching TV shows or baking something yummy.

message 4362: by Alan (new)

Alan | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Alan from Lancashire, England and I am heavily into Sci Fi. Favourite authors include Philip K. Dick, Adam Roberts, Margaret Atwood and Iain M. Banks. Hopefully some good recommendations will come my way from being a member of this community. :-)

V.W. Singer | 371 comments My GR notifications seems to be on the fritz.

Anyway, welcome everyone that I've missed!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Yeah, for some reason GR just drops notifications for some reason.

Anyway welcome Alexa and Alan.

message 4365: by Mikey (new)

Mikey Gilson (leftthefame) | 4 comments Hi guys! My name is Mikey and I'm a very slow reader! My love for fantasy books started with The Hobbit, which was read to me as a child. The first real fantasy book I read was my sisters copy of Daggerspell the first book of Katherine Kerrs Deverry Cycle, it took me almost a year! I slowly made my way through the rest of the books she had written only to find I had caught her up!

I re read the series once she had finished it recently.

I have joined this group as I find myself with more and more free time to read lately.

This year I have read:

The Hobbit
Trudi Canavan - The traitor Spy Trilogy
Scott Lynch - Gentleman Bastards
Ben Aaronovitch - River of London (didn't enjoy)
Morgan Rice - A quest of HEroes (Awful)
Myke Cole - Control Point (ok)

I am now reading PAtrick Rothfuss and am loving it!

I'm looking forward to finishing this series so that I can join in the suggested reads or pick up books from the bookshelf.

message 4370: by Michael (new)

Michael Coorlim (mcoorlim) Very interesting stuff.

message 4371: by Martin (new)

Martin (bookbloke) | 2 comments The land of eng is currently very dark as it is 11:40 at night, hows Seattle? I'm guessing Whengawpo means welcome?

message 4372: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Abe. (wagonburner) | 21 comments It means hello, I see you, welcome. Seattle is, well, it's climate is pretty much the same as Camelot I'm afraid.

message 4373: by Superior Ven A. (new)

Superior Ven A. Cava (superiorcva) | 6 comments Hello to everyone. I'm new to Goodreads in general, but as it turns out, I don't actually know what I like to read. I'm just getting to the point in life were I'm learning about myself, but I know for sure fantasy and scifi are my favourites. Of these, I like "hard" scifi and fantasy, preferably with paracosms, but I'm willing to explore just about anything for now until I learn more about my preferences. Hope I can speak with everyone in this lovely group soon.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi, feel free to browse my book shelves. I'm sure others here will tell you the same.

message 4375: by Marina (new)

Marina (marinaescapes) hello!
my name is Marina, 32, from Croatia. I've been teaching English and German in primary school for 7 years, but currently I'm on sick leave because I've been diagnosed with leukemia, which gives me a lot of time for reading...and this is how I joined goodreads recently, so I'm still finding my way round.
I've always loved fantasy, horror, paranormal and such, and I hope I'll find some inspiration with you guys :)
the author who left me breathless recently and whose works I all read is Joe Abercrombie, and I would be extremely grateful to everyone who can recommend anything similar to his style of writing, especially The First Law trilogy or The Heroes!
currently, I'm reading N. Gaiman, American Gods, and I really like it! it's weird. I like weird. :)
hope for some recommendations.
greetings from Croatia!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Marina, welcome. Fell free to browse my "book shelves" here. I like fantasy also. While I don't think I got into Abercrombie as much as you I'm happy to have you look for suggestions. I'm sure others here will say the same.

DoodlePanda Welcome! :)

message 4378: by Laz (new)

Laz the Sailor (laz7) Hello!

I've been active on GR for over 2 years, and I'm looking to find a scifi group that fits well with my interests. This group came highly recommended by some other GR fans.

While I have read most of the the classics (love RAH, MZB, and ERB), I'm currently more interested in newer authors (eg alive) such as Hugh Howie and CJ Cherryh.

I'm looking forward to new discussions and recommendations.

message 4380: by Angela (new)

Angela Howdy! I have been reading sci-fi/fantasy for as long as I can remember. I got started on sci-fi when I was 4 years old, saw Star Wars in the theater for the first time and was hooked. I read a lot, write a little and watch as much SF/F as I can, excepting the Syfy channel's excuse for science fiction. UGH! Anyway, I'm a bookkeeper by day, nerd by night and I have 2 cats that are family. Not sure what else to put here but that's the short short version. :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Angela, welcome. You'll fit right in.

Rudi Bracaglia | 6 comments Hi there! My name is Rudi Bracaglia. I'm 28 yrs old and I'm pleased to meet everyone here :) I love books always have. I started with the classics and now my favorite authors include Tolkien, CS Lewis, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Bernard Cornwell, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

message 4383: by Michael (new)

Michael DeAngelo | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Michael DeAngelo and I've been reading fantasy since I was fifteen. I love the genre more than anything else out there, so much that I started writing it - probably the one thing I can't give up on in life! My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore. I'm also shamelessly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

message 4385: by Paul (new)

Paul Spence (paulbspence) | 26 comments Hello! I'm Paul B. Spence, I'm 42 and I've been reading science fiction since I was a kid. I hold fond memories of Heinlein and Norton. I try to read anything I can. Luckily, I live in Portales, NM, home of the Jack Williamson Science Fiction Library, which is awesome.

I'm an archaeologist and an author. It keeps me busy.

message 4387: by Cas (new)

Cas Blomberg (casblomberg) | 15 comments Hi! My name is Cas and I'm from Georgia (the state, not the country), but when I met my Swedish Husband and we had our first child, we moved over to Stockholm. I've been here ever since, slowly going a little more crazy each winter.

Charles Dickens introduced me to reading, but along the journey I fell in love with fantasy and science fiction. I am an author, and eventually I'll get around to posting about my book in the other forum post, but for now I'm so happy finding this group that I don't even want to talk about it yet! When you live in a land where everyone around you speaks a language other than your own native tongue, it's hard to find like-minded groups of people. I feel like grabbing a cup of coffee and wandering around a bit.

I know I'm just scraping the surface on this site, but I'm happy I found this group and can't wait to get started reading the groups book choices, even though I'm showing up late =).

/Cas Blomberg

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Cas, welcome. The coffee maker is over there in the corner by the donuts. Just wander around and say hi. Feel free to browse our book shelves.

message 4390: by Cas (new)

Cas Blomberg (casblomberg) | 15 comments Thanks! I found the coffee, but the donuts were all gone. No worries, though. I found books! So many books!! It's like walking into a bookstore, and then looking at my watch and realizing three hours have disappeared. Unlike a bookstore, I can also chat with folks here =). That part is nice.

message 4391: by Eliot (new)

Eliot Baker | 15 comments Hey folks. My name is Eliot Baker and I decided to introduce myself right after Cas because I, too, live in a Nordic country whose winters drove me to making imaginary friends, talking to them, and writing down what they said in my debut novel, The Last Ancient I live in Finland, where I'm a professor of communications at a rural college and I sing in a heavy metal band, and do outdoorsy stuff while my Finnish wife and I raise two bi-lingual pre-schoolers. Mostly I write these days. Trying to make that whole isolation in darkness thing work for me. My fantasy and mystery plots draw on my past as a science journalist and my interests in history and politics. Nice to meet y'all!

message 4394: by D.L. (new)

D.L. Frizzell (dl_frizzell) | 8 comments Hello all. I'm David Frizzell. No, I'm not a country singer from the eighties. Been around GR for a little while, but not interactively. Someone told there are these things called 'groups' that I could join to discuss the stuff I read. Wow, what will they think of next?

Now the essentials about me: I'm an IT manager. I have a three foot tall clone trooper standing guard in my office. I love science fiction the most, but really any fiction if it's written well. The only thing I will not read is YA. Makes me barf. I admit that I read the first book in the Twilight series to see what the clamor was about, then quickly turned to the speculative works of Ray Bradbury to get my mind right again.

I'm really glad Al ate the last donut because I'm trying to lose a few pounds before DragonCon this year.

message 4395: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Crap....I was getting ready to ask you to sing I'm going to Hire a Wino (to Decorate our Home). Oh well, I guess you can't help you're not THAT David Frizzell, well welcome anyway.

I mean having tried to read about romantic, friendly, sparkly vampires you don't need any more grief. You have my sympathy.

I can recommend some good military science fiction if you still need to clear your "mental palate"????

message 4396: by Nicol (new)

Nicol | 506 comments Buenas!! I'm 34 and absolutely love sci-if and fantasy! This genre allows conversations and imaginations that no other truly can. I'm an ER nurse but before nursing I was in graduate school for history. I work nights in the US so don't be surprised to only see my comments in the middle of the nights! Looking forward to discussing some great books.

Middle of your nights is fine! This conference is international - it even reaches the remote shores of England, and some early risers will pick up your comments quite soon after posting.

message 4399: by Madeleine (new)

Madeleine Stone (madeleinestone) | 2 comments Hi everyone- excited to be joining the Goodreads community! I've been reading science fiction and fantasy my entire life, and recently begun writing my own hard s.f. stories. I'm an environmental scientist by training and my interests in biology and the environment influence my book selections. I'm excited by the emerging subgenres of biopunk, ecofiction and environmental fiction. Favorite authors include Paolo Bacigalupi, Jeff VanderMeer and Margaret Atwood.
