Is a jackalope really a rabbit?

Art (artfink02) | 151 comments Somehow, Bunnicula, the vampire bunny, always tickled my fancy for bunnies. My elementary classes enjoyed my reading from that series.

However, from my acting, I'd love to have a sidekick like Harvey, Elwood P. Dowd's buddy.

message 4204: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments ...yes, but Harvey is actually a "Pooka".

I love controversy.

Art (artfink02) | 151 comments Well, to be a little 'bookish'
(Wikipedia)

- The púca (Irish for spirit/ghost), pooka, phouka, phooka, phooca or púka is primarily a creature of Irish folklore.[1] Considered to be bringers both of good and bad fortune, they could either help or hinder rural and marine communities. The creatures were said to be shape changers which could take the appearance of black horses, goats and rabbits.

The púca has counterparts throughout the Celtic cultures of Northwest Europe. For instance in Welsh mythology it is named the pwca or pwwka and in Cornish the Bucca.[2] In the Channel Islands, the pouque were said to be fairies who lived near ancient stones; in Channel Island French a cromlech is referred to as a pouquelée or pouquelay(e), poulpiquet/polpegan are corresponding terms in Brittany.[3][4].

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Yeah...but it's not a rabbit. It's a pooka that "looks like a rabbit".

Now another question: Is Jessica Rabbit a rabbit?

message 4209: by Joy (new)

Joy Daniels (joy_daniels) Hi all

I'm new to this group, but really excited to have found a place to learn and chat about sci fi & fantasy books!

I live in the DC area, with husband and two kids. I have a MS in oceanography and do science consulting on climate change for the EPA and the World Bank, among others - and always happy to answer science question so feel free to PM me! I'm also a published author of contemporary, paranormal, and new adult romance. I'm working to combine these two worlds into a sci fi series about humans adapted to life in the ocean.

I LOVE to read and 90% of the books I choose are sci fi and fantasy. My fav recent book (as in last week :-) ) is Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop. I loved the Black Jewels Trilogy, but couldn't get through the Ephemera series. I am loving this one so far.

I've been on a big YA kick for the past year or so. In 2014 I am looking forward to reading Dreams of Gods & Monsters the final installment in Laini Taylor's fantastic series, and Ruin and Rising, the conclusion of Leigh Bardugo's amazing Grisha series. My next up book is Cress by Marissa Meyer.

I am always looking for recs of good fantasy and sci fi, both YA and adult. Very excited to be here!

-- Joy

Martin Caidin's Aquarius Mission by Martin Caidin might give you some ideas about aquatic life ala SciFi.

Arthur Pace (arthurpace) | 3 comments Hi everybody.

I'm new to the site. Joined mostly because I finished something of my own, but have happened upon a lot of interesting topics since then. Based on the recommendations threads, there's a massive amount of excellent books out there that I'd never heard of. Joy.

Mostly read sci-fi and fantasy, all the better if it comes with a helping of satire.

Zang- Bravo, how refreshing, I'm a big fan of old scifi too, I have a collection of old books, including the old flip books with a story on the front and flip and another story on the back. Love to read them.

Ooh! ACE Doubles. I have a collection of them too. Thor's Hammer, I Want The Stars, Ultimatum in 2050 A.D., good stuff.

message 4222: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments I "had" some of those years ago. My mom and dad stored a box of books in a shed while i was in the army...they didn't do well. But I do recall those.

message 4223: by Pj (new)

Pj Belanger | 10 comments Some of my favorite ACE Doubles are:
A Touch of Infinity (Ellison)/The Man with Nine Lives (Ellison),
Who Speaks of Conquest? (Wright)/The Earth in Peril (Wollheim),
The Houses of Iszm (Jack Vance)/Son of the Tree (Vance).

Many were 35 cents each. I remember when my father was upset that the price went up to 40 cents! I have some of those as well as some priced all the way up to 95 cents... Classic Sci-Fi at its best!

message 4224: by [deleted user] (new)

Hullo... Im Sylvian, bit of a book reader, mostly a writer, which means I do write and here's some snippets of what I do. I'm also looking to write a collective of short stories but having the inclination to get them together is proving otherwise.

A State of Human Failure
Railway Poetry
Sylvian on Tubeyou
terribly written Doctor Who Fanfic

message 4225: by D.E. (new)

D.E. E. Wright | 2 comments Oh hi!

My name's Dan and I'm a huge book reader and a part time writer as well. I'm a fan of the realistic, more grounded fantasy so my favorite fantasy authors are George R R Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Joe Abercrombie. I keep on hearing more and more about K. J. Parker on Goodreads so I'm looking to get into his/her stuff as well.
As for sci-fi I mostly read authors from the Golden and New Wave eras of the genre, so Robert Heinlen, Isaac Asimov and, probably my greatest influence in both life and writing, Frank Herbert. Though I'm ashamed to admit it I don't read much contemporary sci-fi authors; probably Neal Stephenson, though his stuff can be ...odd, to classify.
As for my writing, I've got one novel self-published, a gritty fantasy spy thriller called The Thornwood Plot. Feel free to check it out!

Zang | 8 comments V.W. wrote: "Welcome Zang!

Have you read "The Wailing Asteroid" by Murray Leinster? Or "Interstellar Patrol" by Christopher Anvil. Both classics and very amusing."

Hi V.W.

Sorry for the tardiness of my response.

I've read "The Wailing Asteroid", but I don't have a clear recollection of it. I've got a dozen or more Murray Leinster books. I first took notice of him when I got "The Shape of Things" a 1965 anthology edited by Damon Knight that has some excellent stuff including "The Eternal Now". That one encouraged me to search out some more.

I'm not familiar with Christopher Anvil at all, I'm afraid.

Zang | 8 comments Hi Pj

Yeah, I have quite a few Ace Doubles. They have some great covers. Whenever I'm reading one in public, I imagine people thinking that my book is upside down!

Some of my favourites include Robert Silverberg: "Next Stop the Stars/The Seed of Earth", Margaret St. Clair: "Message from the Eocene/Three Worlds of Futurity" and H. Beam Piper & John J. McGuire ""Crisis in 2140"/Cyril Judd "Gunner Cade".

message 4233: by Rolo (new)

Rolo (rolokirk) Hello all. This is the first Goodreads group that I've ever joined. I'm a huge fan of fiction in all forms: books, TV, movies, video games, and what have you. I'm always looking for the next best thing. And I love making obscure fiction references. It looks like I've only read 8 of the groups books so far, so I'm feeling a bit behind. So I'm off to go read now, bye.

Kazza | 5 comments Hi everyone! Kazza isn't my real name, but feel free to call me by that. :) I'm still studying, and I'm from Singapore. (You know, that tiny little island in Southeast Asia? No? Okay.)

I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy! There's something so magical about being able to escape into another world when we open up a book. That's why I like them.

Kazza | 5 comments V.W.: Ah, that's good to know. When I did an overseas exchange program several years ago to a UK high school, quite a number of them didn't know where Singapore was. (As usual, we got the same responses: "Is it part of China?" "No, I thought it was part of Malaysia!" etc.)

Thank you, V.W. and Mike for the welcome! :)

message 4243: by Mayank (new)

Mayank Singh (serverguy) | 7 comments Hello. I am Mayank. I read mostly graphic novels and non-fiction along with Sci-fi to a greater and fantasy to a lesser extent. Asimov, Doug Adams, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman are some of my favorite authors. I am not a very big fan of contemporary Sci-fi though. Prefer more old school. Like Foundation, Dune, Ringworld etc. As far as fantasy is concerned, I am open to suggestions that involve more magic, less politics and even lesser stereotypes and tropes.

message 4244: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Don't feel bad Kazza. This is a fairly illiterate generation. Many people don't know where they live much less where anyone else does.

message 4245: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Spratt Hi, my name is Carrie and I'm 30 years old from Canton, GA. I'm married to my wonderful husband whom I met on World of Warcraft 8 years ago. We have 2 beautiful girls ages 2 and 5 months. I went to college at The Ohio State University for Music Education and Jazz Studies to become a dog groomer for 5 years before I became a stay at home mom.

I joined the group to help me get into more books. I love fantasy and sci-fi so this obviously was a good group. My husband also joined so we can discuss the books together as well. I'm always down to make new friends and talk about just about anything so feel free to hit me up.

Thanks for the time and I can't wait to get reading and discussing the books!

I had a similar experience when I went to study in the US. A few people were surprised to learn that South Africa is a country and when asked where it was I would say "Well, you know Africa? It's at the bottom." :) I had a lot of fun with it actually.
