David, for now we only have cats. I think were tribbles to arrive the cats might eat them however so we haven't tried.

Mike, about the cats eating the tribbles...As you may recall, the "trouble with tribbles" on the USS Enterprise was that they multiplied and pretty much took over the ship. Now, it's not clear to me from the episode whether they actually need another tribble to procreate, but I'm taking no chances. I'm putting my foot down about taking another tribble into the house, because we might all be in danger, humans and pets:) So, if it's a question of whether the cats/dogs or the tribbles come out on top, I'm putting my money on the furry little space creatures. Hey, maybe we should start a discussion group about which would win:)

My cats are total scaredy cats so they'd probably freak out if a little bundle of fur chattered at them when they went near it. It would probably be hilarious to watch actually. Now I'm going to have to look into the cost of shipping tribbles to SA :P

But the cats will be happy. Like a young vampire who finds him or herself in New York....millions of "walking happy meals" as Spike said.

I'm new. So happy to meet other like minded souls! I've always loved sci fi and fantasy in any and every media. But reading has always been sacred to me :) While I was in uni I barely had anytime to read (non-school related stuff, of course), and that was probably harder than writing my thesis! So this summer I've decided to dedicate myself, body and soul, to all the books I've missed!
Can't wait to be part of a some really interesting discussions!
Anyway, here are some of the books I've read (the highlights at least):
Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov
The Hobbit by Tolkien
Dune Series (incomplete) by Frank Herbert
A Song of Ice and Fire (incomplete), by George R. R. Martin
Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
Some by Robert Heinlein
Some by Ursula K Leguin
Some by Neil Gaiman
And lots of other stuff...
Right now I'm reading The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. It's the story about two mythological creatures that find themselves by accident in New York during the late 1800s. They must blend in with human society and adapt to life as mortals. I highly recommend it!

My favorite genre is fantasy, but I haven't been able to find too many exciting new works. Classics like Tolkien were great, the first couple Robert Jordan books were great, Wizard's First Rule was
fun.
Non-techie sci fi.. I like The Adventures of The Stainless Steel Rat, Deathworld, Ender's Game, and Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. I like good adventure stories of any genre, including Winterdance, Seabiscuit, and recently I have been getting hooked on YA because that seems to be where the most exciting and innovative writing is happening (Hunger Games, Divergent, MazeRunner, etc.). I am working on a fantasy book as time allows, and will start a
book blog soon.
Feel free to stop by and check out my booklist or drop me a friend request, I am fairly new to the Goodread's
neighborhood.

Best!

I see that you are reading Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula. I've been a big Holmes fan for a long time, having read the Conan Doyle collection and a number of the so-called pastiches from other authors. I've also enjoyed the Jeremy Brett series immensely (although watching his mental and physical health deteriorate from Bipolar Disorder and lithium side-effects toward the end of the series was hard). Other favorite actors in the role include Basil Rathbone, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jonny Miller in the "Elementary" TV show. How are you liking Sherlock's encounter with Dracula in the book? If it's any good, I'll put it on my to-read list.

Elantra is a good series. I think I've read all of them except the latest one. Good main character. She's smart, strong, loyal and imaginative when it comes to dealing with her challenges. Only beef I have with the stories is that (**possible spoiler**), in any other universe, she'd get a promotion and a pay hike for everything she does:)

enjoy your reading and chat to me anytime

I believe the internet provides a tool to bring people together and make the world a more open, fair and democratic place.
In 2013 I wrote a collection of short stories set in a universe where not just the laws of physics, but also the laws of eros, passion, desire and the spirit are a little different than our own.
I was born in Turin on April 15th, 1977. I like to ride my bike, take walks through nature and spend most of my free time with my family.

Nice to meet you all!

This all started getting old round when I hit 31 and I started playing mmos and met a wonderful lady from the UK, she flew over, we hit it off and she tamed me. I am now pushing 40 married and have a beautiful four year old boy and my only regret is that we didn't meet sooner.

I'm also a fan of classic sci-fi authors such as Robert Heinlein, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Ursula K. Le Guin, etc. I'm always looking for suggestions about up-and-coming sci-fi writers who are great prose artists, storytellers and visionaries.

Favorite authors include, Michael Connelly, Nelson DeMille, John Sandford, Dexter Colling, Roger Crais, James Lee Burke, Robert B. Parker, Ross MacDonald, David Baldacci, Ian Fleming, James Grisham, Carl Hiaasen, Stieg Larrson, J.A. Jance, Dennis Lehane, John D. McDonald, Henning Mankell, Philip Margolin, J.D. Robb, Andrew Vachss and others. At this point, they become too numerous to mention.

Welcome.

I'm fairly new to GoodReads and book sites in general. I joined Shelfari back in February and then I joined GoodReads and LibraryThing in June. I'm probably the most active on Shelfari, but I'm trying to participate on here and LibraryThing a bit more as well.
On Shelfari I belong to a few sci-fi and fantasy groups and I even help run one of the most active ones. The group layout here is more complex so I guess that will take me awhile to get used to.
Anyway a little about me... I've been a bookworm for pretty much my entire life and I've been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy for as long as I can remember. I used to like horror as well when I was a lot younger, but not so much anymore. I also really like humorous books a lot and all the better when they mix with sci-fi and fantasy. As such Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett are some of my favorite authors.
Earlier in the year I re-read most of Douglas Adams' books and I'm currently restarting Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
I never really consistently kept track of the books I read before joining these book sites, so I've decided not to mark any books as read that I read before 2012 just because it would be too hard for me to remember all the books I've read, when I read them, and how well I liked them. So my to read list contains a lot of books that I'm planning to reread as well as many I've never read.
I admit I'm not all that interested in monthly group books. That's a big reason why I've never gotten involved in live book clubs. I just want to read what I want to read when I want to read it. I'm more interested in the "what are you reading now?" type of discussions as well as other general discussions, but I assume it's not mandatory for me to read the monthly group books in order to be a member here.
Anyway I guess I'll go explore the group a bit now. It looks like there's a lot to see

Thanks for the welcome.
I can see being interested in the group reads enough to add them to my to read list. Being interested enough to drop whatever I'm currently reading(I have a hard time handling more than one book at once) to read it when the rest of the group is reading it is another matter altogether. I won't say that it's never going to happen, but I'll keep an eye out and wait and see.

I have been a big reader for as long as I can remember - really ever since my mother bought a bunch of those illustrated classics for children which I methodically devoured before moving onto bigger and better things. I am a lover of a lot of the classics, some of my favorite authors being Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Twain, Dumas, some Dickens, etc etc. But overall my favorite things to read are definitely sci-fi and fantasy. I started off with Lord of the Rings and a lot of different books in the expanded Start Wars universe when I was in middle school and have since graduated to authors like Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Huxley, Asimov.
Currently I am reading the latest installment of A Song of Ice and Fire (Dance With Dragons)... this after having experienced the worst trauma at the hands of a paperback (halfway through A Storm of Swords) that I have experienced since the death of Albus Dumbledore.
I am looking forward to starting on some new fantasy series that I have seen recommended on this site like The Kingkiller Chronicles, and would love some recommendations if you guys have any suggestions?
Anyway, I look forward to reading some good books with you guys and I thank you all in advance for the great times we are sure to have in discussing the best our favorite genres have to offer!

Currently i'm reading Consider Phlebas and looking forward to read all the Culture's books.

Born in South Africa but living in London, I've been reading SF since I was a kid at school. I picked up one of the Asimov books with the cool Chris Foss paintings on the cover, and that was it! I've read a fair cross-section of the genre, but always looking for new and interesting authors. My favourites are Gene Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, Ian M Banks, and Neal Stephenson. I'm currently reading Banks' Surface Detail and Neal Asher's Prador Moon.
I work as a corporate tax specialist for a large multinational, which keeps me busy with tax and accounting and corporate law, which I enjoy, and I've been doing a bit of writing myself as well. I used to fly in South Africa but haven't done that for a long while. If I win the lottery I'll start doing it again!

Thanks Mike
I should have joined much sooner this place is quite handy!

I'm a 36-years old French reader, who reads a lot of books in English.
I've been very much into SF and fantasy since I'm quite young (I read the Amber series by Zelazny when I was 11). Since I'm 25 or so I'm not so sure I'm still into fantasy though. I have a hard time finding books I like, even though they are highly praised by other readers (for instance I thought that Suldrun's Garden was OK but did not want to read the sequel, and I was far from thrilled by A Game of Thrones).
There is still hope for me I think as I liked a lot Blood Ties which I read completely by accident, and I re-read recently the Earthsea series and really enjoyed it as well.
So I'm hoping to find here good recommandation! :)

That was a most unexpected response! Love it :) Good question Mike!
