Michael Lowell (michaelivanlowell) | 1 comments Hi Gang--

I'm a new superhero fiction author, with one novel out and another on the way soon.

I'm 46 years old, live in Florida and work as a sociology professor when I am not writing novels.

My books explore the idea that in the future, as the economy collapses, corporations take over the American government and a group of superheroes rise up to try and take it back and restore the republic.

I was always an Avengers fan growing up in the 70s and now I am writing about my own heroes in my own superhero universe. I love a lot of the new SH fiction that is coming out these days. Comic books are still great, and I read as many as I can, but I do not have the time to keep up with all the interwoven story lines. The world of novels (and graphic novels) keeps it more confined and in a way more grounded.

I love authors like Lee Child, Jim Butcher, Matthew Reilly, Kelly Meding, Patrick Lee, Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, Jeremy Robinson.

Some are very famous and other not so well known. Great fiction is everywhere, if you're just willing to search!

Paul Drankiewicz (pdrank) | 1 comments Hello my names Paul Drankiewicz and I'm actually more of an aspiring game designer but I want to write content for them. I've worked on a few projects and some I am still working on.

Books are something I kind of got into and I actually wrote a book about a game idea I had.

Writing has made me really want to get back into reading books and sci-fi/fantasy are the most interesting to me because they require the most imagination in my opinion.

Shay Long | 1 comments Hi, I'm Shay, hailing from Maryland. I was born in '82- that seems to be a thing to share on here. I'm a Heinlein nut, but also read everything Phillip K Dick, Orson Scott Card, Lovecraft (I know, more horror than sci-fi). My favorite, hands down, was Stranger in a Strange Land, but I have fallen in love with different writing styles and characters a dozen times. I fell for Steven King's Dark Tower series (although he did eventually lose me when he expectedly inserted himself into the story). I recently finished reading another Guillermo del Toro book, which I thoroughly enjoyed, as well as Heinlein's final work, To Sail Beyond the Sunset. I read several books at a time, and generally finish a few each week. I'm always looking for new emerging authors, and am hoping to find some interesting reads through this group.

Happy journeys!

Molly (mollycircles) Hi group....I am Molly from Reston VA. I have always been a bookworm. A few of my favorite authors in this genre are Robin Hobb, Dan Simmons, George R. R. Martin, J.R. Tolkien, and Susan Cooper. I have to be honest though....I have tried to read the "Dark Tower" series for years....just cannot get into the second book. This totally bums me out because I love Stephen king and everyone raves about this series. Other than that my yearly goal for reading is always 52 books....(I make this resolution every year....this might be my first year to make it though:)! I have had "Little, Big" on my wish list for months now...so glad that you are reading it now.

John Mckernan | 107 comments Hi,I'm John and I live and teach in central Florida. I just turned 38 and have 4 children (ranging from ages 9 to 13). My reading interests are kind of all over the place from westerns, Clancy novels, sci-fi, classics, history, ...
I find the sci-fi books I pick up are a lot more hit or miss for me so I'm hoping this club can steer me towards more quality stuff.

message 3467: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Have you tried the Lost Fleet books? Dauntless is the first. Lots of action and well written. May be a little closer to space opera than what some call "hard science fiction" but nothing that flies in the face of science. I like them.

Have you tried any of Jack McDevitt's books, or how about the old man's war series by Scalzi? McDevitt's got several good series as well as some solid stand alone books. My personal favorite is the Alex Benedict series.

message 3469: by Armen (new)

Armen Pogharian | 3 comments My name's Armen Pogharian and I write YA/tween SF/Fantasy stories. I have two series under contract. The first book of the Misaligned series (Misaligned: The Celtic Connection) is available as an eBook (through most channels) and in paperback with Amazon. The second in the series (The Silver Scepter) is scheduled for e-release at the end of June. The series stems from the question, what happens at the intersection of String Theory and Arthurian legend. The second series is a more traditional Fantasy that places a James Bond-like adventure in a High Fantasy setting. The first book, The Poisoned Princess is schedule for an e-release in September.

As for my reading, in addition to the classics (Tolkien, LeGuinn, Asimov, Clark, et al) I really like Jack McDevitt's stuff, especially the Alex Benedict series. I also like some of Alastair Reynolds books. I've been reading less new fantasy lately, but have enjoyed re-reading Feist with my son as well as some of the great YA stuff (Potter, Ranger's Apprentice, etc.). Outside of SF/Fantasy, I like historical fiction. Things like Pressfield's ancient Greek stories, Cornwell's Lords of the North and Sharpe books.

Paul Gardiner | 1 comments Hi,

I'm Paul, I'm forty and from Ireland. Got into Scifi about 10 years ago through the masterworks series, though I was a fan of PK Dick. I've read most of them at this point but love a good novel. I'm a sucker for time travel novels so if you've any good recommendations I'd love to get them, dont know if there are any left for me to read at this point.
Was a fan of fantasy when I was younger Eddings and such but it fell by the wayside.
Hope to get and give some good recommendation here,

Best Regards

PAul

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Paul, welcome. I'll keep you in mind.

There's a book by Poul Anderson I read back in the '60s and have only a slight memory of. It's The Corridors of Time. I just tracked down a used copy of it to reread. I remember there's a time travel element (of course with that title there almost has to be, LOL).

Roger Zelazny wrote a book called Roadmarks with an interesting take on Time Travel...read it years ago to, the '70s this time.

For slightly "hokey" time travel there is a fairly short lived book series from the 1960's "spy-fi" era called the Agent of T.E.R.R.A. series about a Temporal law enforcement agencies with "secret agent" types". The first isThe Flying Saucer Gambit.

I'm sure there are newer time travel reads but I tried to think of some oldies. :)

Laura Birks (littlebigsis) | 7 comments Hi I'm Laura, I'm 24 and currently living in South Wales in the UK. I mainly read Fantasy, having started off with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings I'm slowly branching out and finding other Fantasy books to read. Starting to read a little more Sci Fi now as well mainly due to a new housemate who reads lots of Sci Fi and this group seems like an excellent place to get some recommendations. Just discovered Mark Hodder's Burton and Swinburne series - cant seem to get enough of it :)

Being an American I feel I should make a Robin Hood comment, but I figure you're tired of it so I'll refrain. :)

Welcome again to Goodreads.

message 3476: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Probably though I don't recall them specifically. I think my first recollection of Robin Hood is the Adventures of Robin Hood TV series with Richard Greene from the 1950s (1955 to 1959 plus some reruns). Then there were several movies, the 1938 film with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland still my favorite....well I really like Alan Rickman in Prince of Thieves, LOL.

message 3477: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments I don't know, Rickman tends to steal most any film he's in and definitely any scene he's in, LOL. He's hysterical in Galaxy Quest. The man's a good actor.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Jeremy. Is SoI&F you're entire experience in Fantasy? Not sure what to recommend. Maybe The Fellowship of the Ring would be good if you haven't read it. The Hobbit might even be a good place to start. It's a bit younger but by today's standards well...it's not. We can recommend more and some science fiction. Here we live to give people "to be read" lists they'll never complete, LOL.

Tell us more about what you like...and welcome.

I'm busy reading The SoIaF series and I'm also loving it! I have to recommend my favourite fantasy series Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson which starts with The Final Empire.

Mike hit the nail on the head, if you give us leave to, we'll give you more recommendations than you can ever hope to read! :)

message 3482: by Kay (new)

Kay Kenyon (kaykenyon) | 10 comments Hello everyone.

I have been a fantasy and science fiction lover my whole life. I am also an author of 10 SF novels. My next book is a fantasy, my first novel-length fantasy, titled A Thousand Perfect Things.

Lately I've read wonderful books like:

IQ84, by Haruki Murakami (yes, I really like strange books, and this was indeed strange)

The Half-Made World, Felix Gilman

Under Heaven, Guy Gavriel Kay

The Shape of Desire and Still Life with Shapeshifter, Sharon Shinn

An old book: Seventh Son, Orson Scott Card

11/22/63, Stephen King

The Cloud roads, Martha Wells

Dark Sleeper, Jeffrey Barlough (out of print, but a must read!)

The Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss

And a bunch of urban fantasies, including those by Patricia Briggs, Jim Butchert and more.

I blog about writing at http://kaykenyon.com

I try to keep up with the genre, but I always feel 20 books behind.

I look forward to following discussions!

Verlkungen Hi! I'm Tor, 22. Big fantasy lover, though generally nothing super epic (although exceptions have been and most likely still will be made). I live in the UK, have a daft dog, and work for Lush retail.

Fave authors include Jacqueline Carey, Neil Gaiman, Juliet Marillier and Robin McKinley.

Currently reading The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly - enjoying it!

Nice to meet you all!

I likely won't be joining in on most/any of the monthly picks. I'm in entirely too many book clubs at the moment, but a lot of my GR friends are in this group and I see some interesting stuff coming up on my feed from here almost daily, so I figure I may as well join and jump in from time to time.

I work for an industrial electronics repair company handling their I.T. stuff and their programming needs. I eventually want to change careers and write full time. Some dreams are just worth fighting for.

I've always been a fan if Sci-Si and Fantasy. I particularly enjoy dystopian, cyberpunk, and space Sci-Fi.

As for fantasy, I prefer it to be full of wizards. Or at least have one wizard.

Been a fan of Terry Pratchett, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, David Gemmel, Joe Haldeman, Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov for longer than I care to remember (amongst others)

Looking forward to connecting with you guys more as time goes on :)

Hi;
I returned to reading when my job had me flying all over the place; I work in Healthcare Accreditation. I've had some ideas floating around in my head, so I thought I'd try writing them down. I just put my first book on Amazon.
I live in Central New York. No, not Central Park, NYC. Try 350 miles West-Northwest from there!Nothing like NYC, but then, nothing is like NYC.
I am a Respiratory Therapist by trade, with extensive ICU (Yes, liquid breathing has been done, at least partially), Home Care(profit margins are very low), and Management experience(I've had great mentors). I was born in the most recent Eisenhower administration, have been married for 32 years, and have two grown sons that keep making me proud.
I bagan reading SF when a friend in 7th grade lent me E.E."Doc" Smith's Lensmen series. Everything I've read since that I remember is on my self.
I hope to learn some things here. If anyone needs some advice writing about medical scenes, just ask. If I can help, I will.
My favorite author is Michael R. Hicks. I really enjoy his books.
