I'm Fresie and I'm a complete SF nut. If I had to name just one SF book that I love, it had to be Tales of Pirx the Pilot by Stanislaw Lem. It's a gorgeous mixture of hilarious and scary... Another great Lem's novel I'd recommend is The Chain of Chance - it's a murder mystery in a futuristic setting, and the ending is absolutely unexpected.
Nice to meet you all!

Hi Fresie! Welcome! Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Nipaporn! Welcome to you too.

edit: just realized 'every other book' doesn't make sense, just change that to 'sprinked through the last 7 months'!

I'm from the Philippines and I've been going to branches of a book store here that sells cheap books called Book Sale. I manage to get lucky often with Fantasy books though I also seem to pick up a lot of book one's in a series and worse some middle of the series books.
I've read stuff like The Hobbit, Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire books 1-4, Well of Darkness. I'm currently reading Dragonce Chronicles book 2 since I have the compilation and finished book one already. I'm interested in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series too.
I'm still pretty new to taking on the classics of the fantasy world but I'm definitely willing to give them a shot and suggestions from the community would be appreciated. :)

yes, I know, getting good books can be a real pain when you live in a foreign country. I live in France and if it wasn't for the Internet, I wouldn't have anything decent to read at all!
Nice to meet you!

If you're interested in the classics, I really liked the Earthsea books -- the world is really well fleshed out.

my name is Agata, I'm 36 and I live in Germany although I am originally from Poland. I picked up English as my third language in school and have been enjoying reading books in english for quite a time now.
My first take on fantasy was reading LOTR as a child. The first SciFi reading experience was probably something from Philip K. Dick.
I very much like to discover new books - especially those which bring a new perspective to an established topic or genre - and to discuss those already read. GR looks like a good platform for this and I am looking forward to discovering, reading and many wonderful discussions.

What fantasy/SF have I read this year? I finished with a six month journey into Wheel of Time sometime in Jan (and I said no more fantasy ever again, of course). I read Crichton's Micro (erm.. it was insightful) and Paolini's Inheritance (good!) later and now I've picked up The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I'm also labouring my way through Snow Crash in parallel.

*waits for mandatory monotone reply of "hi Wayne"*
I live in Texas, though I still consider myself a Floridian. I've loved sci-fi and fantasy my entire life. Was only 6 when Next Generation first aired and my Dad got me into Star Trek and from there many other sci-fi. My sister was my main catalyst for fantasy reading. David Eddings Belgariad was the first big fantasy series I read.
I'm now a combination stay-at-home Dad and sci-fi writer, working on the third book in a series during those ever so brief nap times.
Currently I'm reading a few things. John Scalzi's "Redshirts", before that came out I was reading a history book "Morning of Fire" and am also listening to Jim Butcher's "Ghost Stories" (really sad James Marsters didn't do this one).

I'm joining this group more for the benefit of my husband, Zach, who prefers sci-fi to my fantasy picks. His favorites are the Enders Game and Hyperion series, though recently he enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire and Temeraire. We both thoroughly enjoyed Ready Player One and are trying to find a way to get the Black Company series on loan for our Nook (need to find a way to get cards at more libraries!).
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the recommendations from this group!

I want to recommend a [hard] scifi romance story about an intelligent computer, two college coeds, and their boyfriends. It's called "Soul Searching." I just read it a couple weeks ago and it's one of the best books I've ever read. It's by a new author [I think] named Keith Caserta. I read the Kindle edition from Amazon. I think it's also on B&N for Nook. Came out about a year ago.
I highly recommend it! It's full of ideas I'd never seen before, and it's a fantastic story. Anyway, Jessica, welcome to our group!

Huge SF fan. Used to be a huge Fantasy fan, but somehow that's shifted. Odd. I still like to think of myself as one of the few, elite, rare people who recognize the genius of Philip K. Dick, and am still consistently surprised to find a billion and a half people are the same elite, rare people. :)
I write a bit myself (check my profile if you're interested... I won't advert here). Hope to make your acquaintance! :D

I tried to list some favourite authors, but it's a very, very long list so let's just go with many, many lots, and I'll try no to lurk too much.

I've been lurking for a while now and thought I'd pop out of the shadows and introduce myself. I serve in the United States Coast Guard and am currently stationed in Charleston, SC. Originally, I'm from Chestertown, MD. I spent three years at sea in the Florida Straits detaining and returning migrants (which gives you a definite perspective shift on the whole immigration issue but that is a topic elsewhere). I've been reading Sci/fi and Fantasy for as long as I can remember and writing it for the past ten or eleven years.
My latest read was The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker. I got it for free on my Kindle last night around midnight and finished it about quarter past five this morning. I'm waiting on delivery of Timothy Zahn's Judgement at Proteus, the finale of his Frank Compton Quadrail series. I'm also a fan of Jim Butcher and a host of others.
I have to admit, I am here for entirely selfish reasons. I've been having trouble picking up new authors who are any good. (Buroker is a recent break in the streak.) So I'm hoping to steal some idea's from you folks and get some more reading material :)
See you all around!

I checked out your bookshelves, and it left me little to go on as far as recommendations. Have you tried David Weber? Specifically his Honor Harrington series? (the first few are free at http://www.baenebooks.com/c-1-free-li...) (If you haven't already, make friends with this website) I have a few more to recommend, if you need them.
Happy reading!

Welcome ... and thanks for the reminder. Have had this on my Kindle and decided to try it and have already gotten sucked into the story.
Another series (space opera/military) in the general type of the Honor Harrington series is the Vorkosigan series by Lois Bujold. I have all of both series in my personal library and have re-read them many times.
Another fun series, alternate universe rather than 'space opera' is "The General" series by S. M. Stirling and David Drake.
Also, one of my all-time favorite alien world books is Mother of Demons.

Good to meet you both.
You sound a lot like my wife and I.

And for a Montana native ... it is WAY TOO HOT!

Hi
Kate has just finished reading Spellbound by Kelley Armstrong and moved onto The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and though not Sci-Fi, I've been reading Crossfire by Andy Mcnab.
Thanks for the friend request.
We too are new to Goodreads and you're our first fiends!!
Rgds
Pete

I missed your replies somehow but thank you for the warm welcome! And Sonja, I just finished the last of the Quadrail series today... Awesome book but sad they are done. About the only consolation is I hear he has a new Star Wars book coming out this fall!
I haven't tried Weber, I will add him to my list. One of these days I'll get my bookshelf properly updated!

Hi Lisa. I'm new here too. So welcome.

I'm 26 years young(it's difficult accepting the word "old":), born in Ohrid, Macedonia. I have a bachelor degree in Archaeology and M.A. in Cultural Historic Heritage.
I love extreme sports (rock climbing is my favorite), martial arts, and above all books -- sci-fi mostly.
I've discovered Goodreads recently, and God, I love how the internet and technology connects people ad helps you find really good books.
Favorite author: Isaac Asimov, by far.
The first sci-fi book I read was Foundation, and it initiated me into the world of sci-fi.

My name is Thomas Watson. I’ll answer to Tom or Thomas, either way. I've been reading science fiction and fantasy almost as long as I've known how to read (which is getting to be quite a long time, now). It still makes up almost all of my fiction reading habit. I don't actually have a favorite author, but I do tend to snap up new work by C.J. Cherryh, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Jennifer Roberson as soon as they are released. I've been interested in writing almost as long, and naturally enough decided to write the stuff myself, which led me to actually study the genre. The main tool I used was to collect and read every novel and short story in print that ever won a Hugo or Nebula award. (This process, obviously, is ongoing.) It was quite an education, and gave me a very good sense for how varied a thing the sci-fi/fantasy world really is. Never published anything back then, though that has changed since ebook publishing came into being. At one time I was also a regular sci-fi convention attendee, and through this had a chance to meet some of the authors I admired. They proved, for the most part, to be a remarkably approachable bunch. Those were good times, and I’m happy to say I’m getting back to that in a small way.
Glad to be here and part of this group!
Tom

Hi Lisa, welcome to the group (and to everyone else, too)
So does this mean you don't read eBooks? :) I had to ask, facetious though it might be. I gotta be me! ^)^

@phoenicianbooks

I spent several years as a special effects technician and worked on such films as Terminator, Jaws 3-D, Flight of the Navigator, Aliens and many more, after that I moved into the theme park area and worked for The Walt Disney company, Warner Brothers, and Universal Studio’s, and others, I have designed rides and attractions for theme parks and also fabrication of those parks.
I began writing movie scripts and short stories and that lead me to write to write more things, I will be posting information about my work in the appropriate folder very soon.
I love reading good books, mostly adventure, sic-fi and anything that has lots of imagination in it, I love the work of Ray Bradbury, Robert E. Howard, Steven King, and many others, it really doesn’t matter who the author is as long as they keep my interest and tell a good story.
Thanks for letting me join in the fun.

Been writing since I was a kid. Too many novels to count. Only one worthy of publication, to date. Working on adding to that, heh.
What's up y'all?
