John Kolsun (johnkolsun) | 1 comments Hi everyone, happy to be a part of this group. I'm a reader and a writer currently residing in Scranton, PA. I'm looking for some suggestions on what to read and joined Goodreads in order to discuss more books. When it comes to Sci-Fi, I really like dystopian types.

Welcome John :)

message 2453: by Viv (new)

Viv JM I joined a few weeks ago, but been lurking mainly since...

Only relatively recently discovered the joys of sci-fi (thanks largely to my kids) and more especially fantasy. Hoping to join in with some of the group reads in the near future.

Welcome Snooze, feel free to jump in anywhere.

Laura (lauralauda) | 1 comments Hi, I'm a computer programmer and new author, living in Colorado with my husband and our dogs/cats/horse. I've read quite a few genres in fantasy over the years, but love dark epic and urban fantasy the most. Currently reading Game of Thrones, love it, but it's complex and long. I think I'll be reading it forever.

message 2456: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Laura :)

If reading GoT takes forever, that's probably a good thing. By the time you get caught up in a few years the new one will probably be ready.

Probably.

Nina (ninastar) | 2 comments Hey everyone! I'm Nina and I live in Illinois. I work at a college nearby as the Director of Student Activities, so I get to do all the fun stuff. I live with my three Boston Terriers, my husband and my two special needs cats.

I've been reading fantasy since I was little. I think my dad put The Eye of the World in my hands when I was around 8 and I've been going ever since. Lately I've been on a real teen fantasy genre kick, and have been devouring a couple of those a month. I'm not as big of a fan of sci/fi....because it scares me to think that someday some of that could be true! Kind of a silly reason, I know. But it does scare me. But I'm easily scared.

I recently joined Goodreads and I'm looking forward to getting involved with a book club! I'm currently trying to find some books that aren't a series. I don't want to get too wrapped up in anything since I plan on restarting the Wheel of Time soon so I can be ready when the final book comes out next year!!!

Braxton Cosby (braxtoncosby) | 2 comments Hello. My name is Braxton A. Cosby and I am physical therapist by background. I currently work for SunDance Rehabilitation treating patients from the Geriatric population with various disabilities and impairments. have my own private practice for physical therapy called R2T2 Therapy INC, in which I see a variety of patient’s from children with developmental delays to stroke victims. In my spare time, I dabble in modeling for print. I just released his debut young adult science fiction romance novel, THE STAR-CROSSED SAGA: PROTOSTAR (the first in a series), which has already drawn moderate acclaim.

I live in Georgia with my wife and two children. I received a lot of my inspiration from watching the accomplishments and exploits of my uncle, comedic legend Bill Cosby.

Sean McVeigh (seanmcveigh) | 1 comments Hi Everyone. My name is Sean McVeigh and I live in England, just outside Nottingham with my wife, two children and dog. I've been involved in fantasy since I started secondary school in the mid 80's. My fantasy related past-times have been either playing RPG's, reading hundreds of novels or writing stories. I'm influenced by R.A Salvatore, Terry Pratchett, David Eddings and Robin Hobb, to name but a few excellent authors.
I work from home spending hours each day writing, and am currently busy on my second novel in, The War on Magic series, due out in mid 2012.
In my spare time I run, take my dog on walks, play with my children and watch far too many films. I'm also passionate about VW campers and love nothing more than taking my 1973 bay to VW festivals in the summer.
I've a website, www.seanmcveigh.co.uk and can be found on Facebook.
I've posted my new novels synposis on the Authors page and added reviews. I look forward to hearing what you think.

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 964 comments I am Brenda W. Clough, and although I write science fiction, fantasy, and short stuff, I read far more. (For details, look at my web page, or Google me -- I am about the first 300 hits you'll turn up.) At the moment I am posting nonfiction book reviews up here at Goodreads, but I am very eclectic indeed and may review other things too. Should I review the very latest book I have finished, THE NONESUCH by Georgette Heyer?

message 2468: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Hi, I just joined the group and am having a look around. I'm a massive reader of scifi/fantasy, though just don't have the time I used to. I grew up on Edgar Rice Burroughs, Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock, not to mention Ray Bradbury, A.E. Van Vogt, Clifford D. Simak and more of the classics.

Nowadays, I tend to read more Simon R. Green, Lois McMaster Bujold and Jim Butcher.

I am a published author, and write what I always loved to read...adventure. Though exactly where I fit in is a mystery to me most of the time. Where does pirates/steampunk/timetravel/fantasy/scifi/romance fit? If you have any ideas, let me know!

I hope to visit more and get to know the community. I am a regular attendee at scifi/fantasy conventions, steampunk cons, renaissance faires, pirate festivals...anything to distract and escape the real world. I tend toward the specialty of 'found' costumes and can cobble together a fair fit from what is already in my closet most of the time.

So, anyone else out there grow up reading about Pelucidar and John Carter on Mars? Or Fahfrd and the Grey Mouser?

message 2469: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Maureen :)

I, for one, didn't grow up on those :P

message 2470: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Thanks for the welcome, so what did you grow up reading? ;-)

Maureen

message 2471: by [deleted user] (new)

Narnia, mostly.

message 2472: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments I never read those! It's funny, all the Tolkein but never Narnia... I wonder if some families are Middle Earth and some are Narnia...

message 2473: by [deleted user] (new)

It wasn't a family thing...hell, my family wasn't much into reading. I just picked up a Narnia book in elementary school and started reading it on my own :P

message 2474: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Ah. I grew up surrounded by Tolkein, Burroughs and the early authors of scif dom. Dad was a member of the Science Fiction Bookclub and we got everything... Everyone in my family read...scif fi, fantasy, historical, classics... I don't remember not being able to read.

What attracked you to Narnia? It's one of those series I never felt drawn to.

message 2475: by [deleted user] (new)

At first? Nothing. It was a random selection while standing in the library. After reading it, I wanted to know what happened next so kept on with the series. Sadly, I barely remember anything from the books nowadays...

message 2476: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Did you see the movies? (I didn't, without the books to compare them to I just didn't take the time to see them.)

Most of the books I read when younger, I pull out and read, even now. I think both my sisters make it a yearly habit to re-read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

You're my hero! We seem to have grown up reading the same authors. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser is an ultimate top 10 series. My first books were ERB's John Carter of Mars, Pellucidar and
Venus series (never have liked Tarzan) and everything by Andre Norton.
When I found Moorcock I was in heaven again. The entire idea of an Eternal Champion in all his variations and then actually meeting!

I have been re-collecting the old Science Fiction that I read as a kid. All the old masters, Asimov, Poul Anderson, Brian Aldiss, AC Clarke, PJ Farmer, Fletcher Pratt, Jack Vance and Kurt Vonnegut Jr, to name a few!

I still have my original 1972 copy of War Against the Rull by AE Van Vogt. Another favorite.

I love all the new writers but the older ones will always be the best.

message 2478: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Another Van Vogt fan! Whoohoo! Yeah, I loved his books. And The Voyage of the Space Beagle is one of my favs. I still maintain it's the real ancestor of Star Trek... I have a signed copy...I had it signed for my Dad and then my sister ended up with it when she got all his SciFi Bookclub books. No fair!

And Pellucidar was more my cup of tea than Tarzan. But I loved all of them. I want to be the next Edgar Rice Burroughs, honestly. I love episodic fiction!

message 2480: by Maureen (new)

message 2481: by Patty (new)

Patty Jansen (pattyjansen) | 2 comments I'm Patty Jansen. I live in Sydney, Australia, and I am a reader of primarily science fiction, although I have been known to read some fantasy. Within science fiction, I am particularly partial to hard SF and space opera.

My favourite authors are C.J. Cherryh, Stephen Baxter, Greg Benford, Kim Stanley Robinson, Sean Williams and a whole host I'm forgetting right now.

Anyway, nice to meet you.

message 2482: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Hi, Patty! You named quite a few authors I've read and a few I'm met. Well, at least their cover artist. David Cherry does CJ Cherryh's cover art and he is the sweetest guy!

You like space opera...have you read Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan saga? I highly recommend it.

message 2484: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments I've often thought that picking up a copy of a book I know well, in say...Spanish, which I'm somewhat familiar with, would be a good way to pick up the language... ;D

message 2485: by Reem_ (new)

Reem_ Ghafri | 4 comments but when its in ur native language .. you enjoy it more and excite about it ..
and not stuck @ some words to look up for meaning ...

Ian | 1 comments Hello Group. I am new to goodreads but enjoy it so far. I have recently become an avid reader however I am very picky with the type of writing styles I enjoy. I love Michael Crichon's style and want to find Fantasy authors with his style. I don't enjoy overly descriptive writing. I tried Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time and King's Dark Tower series but they weren't my style.
Currently reading Joe Abercrobmie's "The Blade Itself" and I am enjoying his style. I am always looking for suggestions. Author's I am going to try next are Brent Weeks and Andy Remic. Any other suggestions?

message 2487: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 14 comments Yeah, so I'd stick with one I already know well to learn from...

Patty Jansen (pattyjansen) | 2 comments Maureen,

I've met a few others of those authors, namely Kim Stanley Robinson and Greg Benford, who is just the nicest person ever.

I have read most of the Miles series. Not the latest one yet, but I'm getting there!

message 2491: by Julie (new)

Julie (jstricker) | 11 comments Hello everyone! I'm an old fantasy/SiFi lover from way back. I think the first fantasy fiction book I ever read (in High school) was The Hobbit. Since, I have read so many more and I am currently reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and I just love it! I was a stay at home mother for many years and then worked parttime as the Librarian of my son's elementary school (k-8). While working at the library I was able to indulge my love of children's and Young Adult's fantasy fiction and read everything. I found new authors like Garth Nix, Eva Ibboston, Lloyd Alexander, Robin McKinney and Phillip Pullman to name just a few.
I look forward to talking about fantasy fiction and Science Fiction with everyone!

message 2493: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Woods (woodsbookshelf) | 2 comments Hello, my name is Tim and I have been an avid fantasy reader since about junior high. The first series that was recommended to me back then was the Elric series by Michael Moorcock. The Elric series along with the Amber series by Roger Zelazny remain my favorites to this day. I recently wrote my own fantasy novel, the first in a trilogy. Since starting on it, my wife decided to try her hand at writing as well. She generally reads the same books that I do but when she started writing her style tended towards paranormal fiction.

Hi, Tim! I've been a big Moorcock fan for a long time. Have you tried Fritz Leiber? More lighthearted, but in the same vein.

Yeah, when I started writing I went for pure fantasy adventure but it all came round to paranormal/adventure/fantasy/romance. With pirates. But that is just me!

message 2498: by David (new)

David Hayden (dahayden) I've been posting in the group for a couple of weeks but forgot to introduce myself ... I'm David. I read and write fantasy, especially sword & sorcery and YA adventure. I've published two books with more coming soon. I love Goodreads. Being part of a community of book lovers is invigorating.

I live in Alabama. I’m into taijiquan, football, diet, and roleplaying games. I collect and write with vintage manual typewriters, mostly from the 1950's, though I have a pristine 1929 Royal Portable. Favorite brands are Olympia and Hermes.

I started reading fantasy in 1990 after I came across the Stormbringer rpg in a comic book shop. That introduced me to Moorcock’s writing, which changed my life in many ways. If you count comics as sci-fi/fantasy, I’ve been reading in the genre most of my life. My first sci-fi novel was Battlefield Earth because of a dentist who was into Scientology (long story).

Favorite authors include Moorcock, Gemmell, Leiber, Rowling, and now Riordan.
