Jennifer Garoutte (jendejour) | 11 comments Hi,

I've been lurking here a couple of weeks reading posts and trying to decide if I want to hang around. Considering I've added about a dozen books to my "that might be interesting to read" list, I think I will stick around.

As somebody else mentioned, there are so many mediocre books out there that it is hard to find a truly enjoyable read these days. It is good to read the impressions of fellow fans of Sci-fi & Fantasy.

I've been an avid sci-fi fan since I was a little kid. Inherited it from my dad & share the trait with my brother. I read so much as kid/teenager, that I have forgotten more books than I remember. My GoodReads booklist isn't even a fraction of what I have read, only what I have read or acquired in last couple of years and some favorites I have hung onto for a couple of decades.

Jen

Matt Larkin (mattlarkin) Hi all. Just recently joined GoodReads and saw this group. I haven't had much time to look around, but this thread showed up in my inbox, so I figured I'd say hello.

I'm an avid reader of fantasy, and also a fantasy author. I read some sci-fi, though I'm more likely to catch a good sci-fi movie.

It's always good to hear what others think about the best (or worst) of the genre.

Welcome Jen and Matt :)

Bets (betsdavies) | 14 comments Hey, I've been hanging at the site forever and don't even remember if I introed me, but I can do it again.

I sub teach, which gives me time to work on writing fantasy. Urban, epic--I usually use the term fusion: throw every genre you know in a blender and hit high. I just published my first book: Weaver's Web. Me being Bets Davies.

I live in Ann Arbor, MI with two mutts and a macaw and a bunch o books.

Influences: Mainly Diane Wynne Jones and Peter S. Beagle. Love Prydain but it didn't influence my writing that much. I started early so while I like most Gaiman, I can't claim him as an influence.

I dunno if I've welcomed you before or not, so I won't.

:P

message 2357: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) Hello all! I've gotten back into reading a ton since I graduated from college. My fav genres are sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, YA and paranormal. I'm fairly active on goodreads and recently found this group. I look forward to sharing some good books with all of you. I also recently started a blog Everything and Nothing where I post all of my reviews and fun things on books. Its kind of been my side project because work became boring, so why not blog in the free time? Happy reading!

whimsicalmeerkat Hey, I know you. :) Welcome to the group!

Welcome Jex :)

message 2360: by Simon (new)

Simon | 3 comments I've been a mad keen science fiction reader since discovering Isaac Asimov's original Foundation Trilogy at age 12 or 13. It was buried amongst the usual Famous Fives and Agatha Christies, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it changed my whole outlook on life. Talk about someone taking the top of your head off and pouring in huge unbroken vistas of unexplored planets!
Now in my 40's, I still have an enduring love of SF.

message 2361: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Lee and Simon :)

message 2362: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Hardy (lynnhardy) | 31 comments Hi, I'm Lynn Hardy - you may remember me from the horrible job I did mediating the LE Modesitt JR. "Haze" discussion.

It was my first time mediating a group and, yep, did I totally blow it. Lee is one of my favorite fantasy authors. I was in charge of the SF book. When controversy rose, I totally bailed! I handle criticism of my own work quite well, I'm not perfect and I know not everyone will love my books, but Lee is such a phenomenal writer, I couldn't imagine anyone not loving his work.

Then I read Haze... I could really see both sides of the story, the readers had a point, but I could also see were Mr. Modesitt was going with his writing style.

I apologize to the readers in that forum, publicly now, for letting you down as moderator. I still need to get up the courage to contact Lee.

It's been 10 months... is it too late to apologize to someone who I have let down so severely?

Everly Anders | 19 comments Hi all,
I am a Sci-fi The Crecian Experiance and fantasy short story writer. The Seamstresses. I love reading both genres as well. I also run a Facebook page for young and upcoming writers. I can't wait to get into some good decisions with you guys. So great to meet people like myself.

Lynn Hardy (lynnhardy) | 31 comments Lee wrote: "Thanks Ala,

Lee, thanks for the encouragement. The worst part is that I've been meaning to apologize since Feb!

But the Full-Cast Audio book was in full production and I was helping direct it, then, before that project was even done I was approached by a movie producer.

Who knew contract negotiations could be so time consuming, not to mention stressful.

Now it's been so long I feel doubly bad. Time to grow up, though. You are totally right. I'll send him an email today!

message 2365: by [deleted user] (new)

I remember that discussion, Lynn. But I don't remember it going that badly.

I mean, sure, I didn't really care for Haze much, but I seem to recall the discussion being alright.

Chuck Graves (girlgraves) hi im chuck. my love of scifi books started with reading every ufo book in my high school library then i stumbled across the hitch hikers guide and ive been in love ever since

Sarah Kaplan | 2 comments Hey all, I'm Sarah. I'm an aspiring writer and avid reader, though lately I've been reading more non-fiction (gotta research if you want to write!) than anything else. I've started a list of literary scifi, please feel free to contribute: http://www.goodreads.com/list/user_vo...

Sinead MacDughlas (sinmacd) | 3 comments Hello everyone! So nice to meet all of you! I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1970 and raised in a small city about 45 minutes north-east of there. I began reading at the age of 4 and have loved and devoured books from then until approximately a year ago. I've taken a haitus from reading to write my own manuscript,(oddly enough a mystery-lit). I'm nearing the end of the writing now and itching to get back to reading soon. I read nearly anything, but Fantasy-fiction is my favourite genre, with Sci-fi. a close second. I'm hoping this group can offer me some great suggestions for my "to read" shelf when I've finished writing. A few of my favourite authors would have to be Brian Lumley, Piers Anthony, Jennifer Fallon, J.R.R. Tolkien, Guy Gavriel Kay, R. A. Heinlein, George Orwell, Jean M. Auel and Frank Herbert. Seriously though, I'm open to nearly anything. I've asked Santa for a Kindle for Christmas and I have a couple of months left before I start buying books again, but please feel free to send me suggestions. I'm always happy to have an excuse to open a book.

message 2373: by A.R. (new)

A.R. Norris | 4 comments Hi. I've been silently stalking the group for a bit and getting a feel for it before stepping in.

I've been a SF Junkie (or geek if you will) since sixth grade's reading of The Time Machine. I'll read any SF story, but really like the ones that go beyond the tech and introduce/showcase future social evolution. The ones that answer the question of where humanity is heading (good, bad, and ugly).

I live in Napa, CA, am married with 4 kids, and work as a project manager for a hospital. Though I grew up in Colorado, I hate the snow... well, not hate. The pictures all look lovely, but don't ask me to go out in it. (LOL, snow angels are overrated.) I moved to the Northern Bay Area of California about 17 years ago and fell in love with the region. This is how I'd terraform Mars if I could be the Mars Terraforming project manager.

Even though I love space, my sense of direction is so off that if humans WERE spread out among the stars now, I'd be MIA on my first trip (even if it were just a "short run" to the moon). Let's just say that most people are born with some inner compass... but not me.

So, that's me in a nutshell. Glad to be part of the group and looking forward to participating.

message 2374: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome A.R. :)

As for your lack of direction, I'm sure there's an app for that. :P

Ivan Torres | 1 comments Hello SciFi and Fantasy Book Club members! My name is Ivan Torres and I am an amateur writer of Fantasy stories. I am hoping to meet others that share the same love for great fantasy worlds and fellow authors. I'll be browsing around the folders to catch up. Thank you for the opportunity and time!

Cynthia Echterling (authorcdecho) | 12 comments Hello,
I'm old as recent dirt (not the kind that comes from 8 million year old asteroids, thank you.)I live in a small town NW Indiana with my cat, Catman (like Batman with a C)

I'm a writer, which is the same thing as being an unemployed vocational counselor. I studied experimental psychology. Have loved anthropology ever since I read William Golding's The Inheritors when I was a kid. Drooling over the Neanderthal genome project.

I'm currently catching up on Terry Pratchett. Big Douglas Adams fan.

LOL, Ala! Yes, that is what saves me now from being lost on Earth. Let's see, future... Mapquest GE (Galactic Edition)

message 2380: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Ivan, Jacki and Cynthia :)

@Jacki - please tell me you've read Dresden. If not, I will be forced to shun you. :P

@A.R. - nah, all we need is a copy of Hitchhikers Guide and we'll be set.

message 2381: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Echterling (authorcdecho) | 12 comments I watched the show? Does that count? I was planning on reading one of the books. Which is the first?

message 2382: by [deleted user] (new)

No. No it doesn't.

ಠ_ಠ

Also, the first couple books are ok. Book 3-4 is where it becomes awesome, then just gets better with each book.

You're not an Urban Fantasy fan until you've read it.

/snob

message 2383: by [deleted user] (new)

It's ok, I'm delusional all the time.

Makes life more fun :P

message 2384: by Mark (new)

Mark Hearn (markhearn) | 27 comments @ Cynthia - The is a DC Comics character called Catman, and I'm sure he has tangled with Batman on several occassions. Last I know he was in the "Secret Six" comic book

message 2385: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Echterling (authorcdecho) | 12 comments I'll have to look that up. I liked Cat Woman.

message 2386: by Jamie (new)

Jamie McFarlane (fickledragon) Greetings all.

I am hyjacking my own introduction thread to ask a question for which I can't find an active forum / discussion for.

In an earlier post I saw the mention of the Dresdon Files and that they are considered Urban Fantasy. Is there a forum that has recommendations for this genre?

OK back to my introduction. I am an avid reader and sometimes writer (never published or even submitted ). I will read anything by LE Modesitt, have recently discovered Steam Punk and enjoy most things sci fi / fantasy.

message 2387: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Echterling (authorcdecho) | 12 comments Hi! I dunno, do they have separate threads for each sub genre here? If not, sounds like a good idea. First you'd have to fight over what constitutes a sub genre ;-D

message 2388: by Jim (new)

Jim Melvin (jimmelvin57) | 3 comments I'm a fantasy writer. My six-book epic fantasy, The Death Wizard Chronicles, will come out via Bell Bridge Books starting August 2012. Hope to see some people at the 2012 DragonCon, where Book 1 will debut. I tend to prefer high fantasy with lots of magic and kick-ass main characters as opposed to the bumblers. George R.R. Martin is an exception (in terms of lack of magic), simply because he's so amazing, but my favorite is probably Steven Erikson. His imagination has no peers, IMO. Stephen Donaldson is great too, along with Stephen King. I guess I really like writers named Steve. :)

message 2389: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Jim1: Welcome, also there's no particular forum dedicated to that, but you can start a thread in the 'What Else Are You Reading' folder asking for Urban Fantasy recommendations.

@Jim2: Welcome :)

message 2390: by Apatt (last edited Aug 29, 2011 12:33AM) (new)

Apatt I was born in 1962 and living in Bangkok, Thailand.
I am a fan of sf/f, and looking for Goodreads friends as my friends don't read! Please have a look at my bookshelf to see if we have books in common! :)

message 2391: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 36 comments I'm a horror/fantasy writer, but am unfortunately only 16 years old so no one really takes me too seriously yet. I have a book finished and sent off to a literary agency (fingers crossed X). I'm not going to mention anything here because I'm trying not to make ads for it.
I love Christopher Paolini's first and second book (still a little hung up on the third) and am a die hard Hunger Games fan. Unfortunately the movie doesn't look so good.

message 2392: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, everyone. My name is Elisa and I'm from Texas. I love fantasy and aspire to be a fantasy/sci-fi (dystopian mostly on the sci-fi part) writer. Lately I realized I haven't been a very good reader. It's been forever since I've read a decent fantasy book and figured Goodreads would be the best place to look. I hope to meet and get to know a lot of y'all, as I'm just dying to get my hands on some more reading material.

message 2393: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Apatt, EJ and Elisa :)

message 2394: by L. (new)

L. Gibbs (ldgibbs) Hello, my name is Elldee, and I have been reading science fiction and fantasy since I was a young girl. My favorites were among the usual greats of the time: Azimov, Burroughs, Clark, Heinlein, Anderson, Tolkien, etc. Currently, I enjoy Jasper Fforde, Card and McCaffery.
I am a teacher of creative writing and a writer as well. I look forward to hearing about new books to read and taking part in this group.

message 2395: by Mel (new)

Mel (meletique) I'm Mel, turning 30 and realized a few years ago that I hadn't read enough books in the last two decades. I live in Austin, and am a tattoo artist on the side.

My main interest is Science Fiction, though I give most books a chance (read first chapter). Lately I've been scouring bookstores, thrift-stores and the like for older sci-fi, fantasy and some humor. I have a love-hate relationship with Heinlein.

Pointing towards the first comments, here's the books I have read so far this year:

The Garden of Rama
Alas, Babylon
Fahrenheit 451
Sea of Glass
Eaters of the Dead
Skyfall
Footfall
Deathlands: Cold Asylum
Under Pressure
Whipping Star
The Lazarus Effect
A Coming of Age
Starburst
Against the Fall of Night
The Unwound Way
Faerie Tale
Enemy Mine
Assignment into Eternity

(Xanth) The Source of Magic, Castle Roogna

(Discworld) Sourcery, Guards Guards, Reaper Man, Going Postal, The Truth, Feet of Clay, Mort

Patrick Mcdonald | 2 comments Hey everyone, really excited to be here. I'm going to do a little crowd sourcing, but what sci-fi series could be the next epic TV series? In other words what is the hard hitting sci-fi version of game of thrones...I'd love suggestions to read or threads that I should get on.

Patrick
