I've been lurking here a couple of weeks reading posts and trying to decide if I want to hang around. Considering I've added about a dozen books to my "that might be interesting to read" list, I think I will stick around.
As somebody else mentioned, there are so many mediocre books out there that it is hard to find a truly enjoyable read these days. It is good to read the impressions of fellow fans of Sci-fi & Fantasy.
I've been an avid sci-fi fan since I was a little kid. Inherited it from my dad & share the trait with my brother. I read so much as kid/teenager, that I have forgotten more books than I remember. My GoodReads booklist isn't even a fraction of what I have read, only what I have read or acquired in last couple of years and some favorites I have hung onto for a couple of decades.

I'm an avid reader of fantasy, and also a fantasy author. I read some sci-fi, though I'm more likely to catch a good sci-fi movie.
It's always good to hear what others think about the best (or worst) of the genre.

I sub teach, which gives me time to work on writing fantasy. Urban, epic--I usually use the term fusion: throw every genre you know in a blender and hit high. I just published my first book: Weaver's Web. Me being Bets Davies.
I live in Ann Arbor, MI with two mutts and a macaw and a bunch o books.
Influences: Mainly Diane Wynne Jones and Peter S. Beagle. Love Prydain but it didn't influence my writing that much. I started early so while I like most Gaiman, I can't claim him as an influence.
I dunno if I've welcomed you before or not, so I won't.
:P

Now in my 40's, I still have an enduring love of SF.

It was my first time mediating a group and, yep, did I totally blow it. Lee is one of my favorite fantasy authors. I was in charge of the SF book. When controversy rose, I totally bailed! I handle criticism of my own work quite well, I'm not perfect and I know not everyone will love my books, but Lee is such a phenomenal writer, I couldn't imagine anyone not loving his work.
Then I read Haze... I could really see both sides of the story, the readers had a point, but I could also see were Mr. Modesitt was going with his writing style.
I apologize to the readers in that forum, publicly now, for letting you down as moderator. I still need to get up the courage to contact Lee.
It's been 10 months... is it too late to apologize to someone who I have let down so severely?

I am a Sci-fi The Crecian Experiance and fantasy short story writer. The Seamstresses. I love reading both genres as well. I also run a Facebook page for young and upcoming writers. I can't wait to get into some good decisions with you guys. So great to meet people like myself.

I didn't know LE Modesitt's first name was Lee.
I wasn't party to that discussion, so don't know the details, but generally people appreciate it when you do pluck up the courage and ..."
Lee, thanks for the encouragement. The worst part is that I've been meaning to apologize since Feb!
But the Full-Cast Audio book was in full production and I was helping direct it, then, before that project was even done I was approached by a movie producer.
Who knew contract negotiations could be so time consuming, not to mention stressful.
Now it's been so long I feel doubly bad. Time to grow up, though. You are totally right. I'll send him an email today!
I remember that discussion, Lynn. But I don't remember it going that badly.
I mean, sure, I didn't really care for Haze much, but I seem to recall the discussion being alright.

now ive been a huge fan of book clubs. i mean come on how cool that you can read a epic book and then talk about that book with other people. my only problem what that i could only find book clubs were they read nora roberts and what no, never any books that i enjoyed....but now ive found goodreads so im very happy on that front

I've been a SF Junkie (or geek if you will) since sixth grade's reading of The Time Machine. I'll read any SF story, but really like the ones that go beyond the tech and introduce/showcase future social evolution. The ones that answer the question of where humanity is heading (good, bad, and ugly).
I live in Napa, CA, am married with 4 kids, and work as a project manager for a hospital. Though I grew up in Colorado, I hate the snow... well, not hate. The pictures all look lovely, but don't ask me to go out in it. (LOL, snow angels are overrated.) I moved to the Northern Bay Area of California about 17 years ago and fell in love with the region. This is how I'd terraform Mars if I could be the Mars Terraforming project manager.
Even though I love space, my sense of direction is so off that if humans WERE spread out among the stars now, I'd be MIA on my first trip (even if it were just a "short run" to the moon). Let's just say that most people are born with some inner compass... but not me.
So, that's me in a nutshell. Glad to be part of the group and looking forward to participating.
Welcome A.R. :)
As for your lack of direction, I'm sure there's an app for that. :P

Why hello there, fair maiden.

I'm old as recent dirt (not the kind that comes from 8 million year old asteroids, thank you.)I live in a small town NW Indiana with my cat, Catman (like Batman with a C)
I'm a writer, which is the same thing as being an unemployed vocational counselor. I studied experimental psychology. Have loved anthropology ever since I read William Golding's The Inheritors when I was a kid. Drooling over the Neanderthal genome project.
I'm currently catching up on Terry Pratchett. Big Douglas Adams fan.

LOL, Ala! Yes, that is what saves me now from being lost on Earth. Let's see, future... Mapquest GE (Galactic Edition)
Welcome Ivan, Jacki and Cynthia :)
@Jacki - please tell me you've read Dresden. If not, I will be forced to shun you. :P
@A.R. - nah, all we need is a copy of Hitchhikers Guide and we'll be set.

No. No it doesn't.

Also, the first couple books are ok. Book 3-4 is where it becomes awesome, then just gets better with each book.
You're not an Urban Fantasy fan until you've read it.

I am hyjacking my own introduction thread to ask a question for which I can't find an active forum / discussion for.
In an earlier post I saw the mention of the Dresdon Files and that they are considered Urban Fantasy. Is there a forum that has recommendations for this genre?
OK back to my introduction. I am an avid reader and sometimes writer (never published or even submitted ). I will read anything by LE Modesitt, have recently discovered Steam Punk and enjoy most things sci fi / fantasy.

@ Jim1: Welcome, also there's no particular forum dedicated to that, but you can start a thread in the 'What Else Are You Reading' folder asking for Urban Fantasy recommendations.
@Jim2: Welcome :)
@Jim2: Welcome :)

I am a fan of sf/f, and looking for Goodreads friends as my friends don't read! Please have a look at my bookshelf to see if we have books in common! :)

I love Christopher Paolini's first and second book (still a little hung up on the third) and am a die hard Hunger Games fan. Unfortunately the movie doesn't look so good.
Hi, everyone. My name is Elisa and I'm from Texas. I love fantasy and aspire to be a fantasy/sci-fi (dystopian mostly on the sci-fi part) writer. Lately I realized I haven't been a very good reader. It's been forever since I've read a decent fantasy book and figured Goodreads would be the best place to look. I hope to meet and get to know a lot of y'all, as I'm just dying to get my hands on some more reading material.
Welcome Apatt, EJ and Elisa :)

I am a teacher of creative writing and a writer as well. I look forward to hearing about new books to read and taking part in this group.

My main interest is Science Fiction, though I give most books a chance (read first chapter). Lately I've been scouring bookstores, thrift-stores and the like for older sci-fi, fantasy and some humor. I have a love-hate relationship with Heinlein.
Pointing towards the first comments, here's the books I have read so far this year:
The Garden of Rama
Alas, Babylon
Fahrenheit 451
Sea of Glass
Eaters of the Dead
Skyfall
Footfall
Deathlands: Cold Asylum
Under Pressure
Whipping Star
The Lazarus Effect
A Coming of Age
Starburst
Against the Fall of Night
The Unwound Way
Faerie Tale
Enemy Mine
Assignment into Eternity
(Xanth) The Source of Magic, Castle Roogna
(Discworld) Sourcery, Guards Guards, Reaper Man, Going Postal, The Truth, Feet of Clay, Mort

I'm Heather. I am 23yrs old and obsessed with reading and writing. I am currently in college studying literature (what else?) and a mother of two girls. Fantasy and scifi have always been favorites of mine as I grew up with two avid-reader-parents who are obsessed with the same. Glad to meet everyone!
Welcome Heather and Patrick :)
