If you like Pratchett (I love him), you should try Christopher Moore (start with Practical Demonkeeping)- hilarious. I like Gaiman as well esp Good Omens (with Pratchett), and American Gods.

I've been a voracious reader (no Bujold puns, please) since childhood, and have worked my way through most SF & Fantasy genres and authors in that time.
I collect Jack Vance but only have a few rarities, and he remains my favorite author. Others are: Iain M. Banks, Ken MacLeod, C.J.Cherryh, John M. Ford, M.A. Foster, Melissa Scott, Emma Bull, Kage Baker, M. John Harrison, Paul Park, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Tim Powers, Edgar Pangborn, and similar high-quality writers.
In Fantasy: Tolkien, Lewis' Narnia, John Crowley, PC Hodgell, Daniel Hood, Will Shetterly & Emma Bull, Charles de Lint, Doris Egan, Tanith Lee, R.A. Lafferty, Gene Wolfe, etc.

Also, welcome Xeyra :)"
Of course...why wouldn't I?
Welcome, fellow newbies :)
Welcome to the group, David :)

I'm a huge fan of fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction (there's a lot of overlap between those 3 genres). In no particular order, some of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors are:
Timothy Zahn
Frank Herbert
Isaac Asimov
Ray Bradbury
J.K. Rowling
C.S. Lewis
J.R.R. Tolkien
Neil Gaiman
Patricia A. McKillip
Terry Pratchett
Robin McKinley
Tamora Pierce
Lloyd Alexander
Douglas Adams
I look forward to being a part of this group. :)

Anyway, I look forward to chatting with all of you in the near future and hope that the light of GoodReads that has shined into my life will take me down a path of fun times and... well... Good Reads. :)
Hiyas Sarah and Ian, welcome to the group :)

Hi David, I think members are all different ages- it shouldn't matter. I like a few of the authors you mentioned- esp Kage Baker and Tanith Lee, but in SF/fantasy the authors I have read and liked in recent times are Kristine Katherine Rusch (the Disappeared series), Sean McMullen (Souls in the Great Machine series, and Voyage of Shadowmoon series), Simon Green, Jim Butcher, Harry Connolly, Warren Ellis (Crooked Little Vein), William C Dietz (Legion of the Damned), Richard Kadrey, Amanda Downum, Mathew Sturges, Poppy Z Brite, Steven Brust, Kim Newman (Anno Dracula), Elizabeth Bear, Christopher Moore (Island of the Sequined Love Nun, etc.), Connie Willis, Liz Williams, Terry Pratchett. Maybe you would like to try one of these?

pale nerd, I've found they agree with me best

I have no hard preference as such between science fiction, speculative fiction or fantasy - I like discovering fiction that is in-between and defies categories.
I like dystopian science fiction, cyberpunk, steampunk, comic fantasy. Great authors I have appreciated are:
Terry Pratchett (discworld totally rocks! and his writing *speaks* to me - esp irony-wise)
Neil Gaiman
Douglas Adams
Isaac Asimov
Arthur C. Clarke
Frank Herbert (dune series is great!)
Alastair Reynolds
William Gibson
Ray Bradbury
Iain (M.) Banks
Tolkien
Stephen Baxter
Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time!)
Robin Hobb
C.S. Lewis (Narnia!)
and many more!

You should read Jeff VanderMeer. Shriek is about the best written book I've ever read.

Thanks Aloha : )

If you like Gaiman and Pratchett, you will probably like Christopher Moore (start with Practical Demonkeeping), and for something really different but very literate, Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair (where there is a police force that protects literature and characters from books, and where you can literally get lost in a book). Or find The Raw Shark Texts by Hall, Steven
(a challenging and worthwhile read).
If you want to try a really good vamp book where Queen Victoria marries Dracula, try Kim Newman's Anno Dracula.

SF with some romance- try Lynne Viehl (aka S L Viehl), Tanya Huff's Valor series, Linnea Sinclair, Ann Aguirre. Otehr SF authors I like a lot, but would not consider romantic: Kristine Katherine Rusch, Sean McMullen, Elizabeth Bear (Carnival is a favorite, or New Amsterdam), Kage Baker (time travel), William Dietz (Legion of the Damned- military sf).

Ender's Game is great and the next two books in the series are also very good but I caution you to stop there, the rest will spoil your experience of the first three.

Some other sf/f authors I like are:
C. J. Cherryh
Neal Stephenson
Kin Stanley Robinson
Neil Gaiman
J. K. Rowling
Emma Bull
Douglas Adams
Greg Egan
R. A. Heinlein
And I'm currently reading Iain Banks.
Welcome to the group, Chenxi :)

Try "Eighth Day" by Al Philipson if you can be happy with an eBook. The most unusual post-apocalyptic "romance" you'll read outside of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein. Eighth Day is rated "R", so expect some fairly intense sex scenes, or avoid it if that would offend you.
Speaking of Heinlein, his "I Will Fear no Evil" is billed as a "romance". Even more unusual than Eighth Day and told by "the master" himself.
None of these would qualify as a "typical" romance (like the ones my wife reads). So if you're looking for something more "mainline" they might not be your cup of spoo.

I'm also working my way through an anthology of 67 Lovecraft books and short stories, which I pick up every now and again (usually between finishing one book and starting another), and am supplementing all this with a few comics (just picked up Watchmen off Ebay and working my way through Buffy season 8 whenever I find the next one in the series for a decent price). I dislike the term "Graphic Novel" for reasons I can't quite explain.
Outside of books I'm a Metal fan (mainly Folk Metal, Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal if anyone is particularly interested, but there are bands I like in most sub-genres), play a lot of PC games (EVE Online being my current vice), enjoy a good movie (a few bad ones too), and sitting in the sun with beer.
Welcome Robin :)
I have never heard of Folk Metal, and now I'm intrigued.
I have never heard of Folk Metal, and now I'm intrigued.

If you're really intrigued check out Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Alestorm, Tyr, In Extremo, Turisas or Finntroll. I'd say that's a pretty good run-down of the go-to bands for the genre.
Thanks Robin, I'll give them a looksee.
Not a big metal fan, really, but songs about vikings, pirates, battles and drinking? I'm game.

Hi all,
I'm a first time novelist who wrote a book for his children and has been overwhelmed at how it's been received. My children and my job occupy most of my time but I try to write when possible. Check out Jake West - The Keeper of the Stones. It's appealing to people of all ages and further details may be obtained at www.jakewest.co.uk (Site currently being professionally overhauled). I'm on Fbook and Twitter and a fan group or two is on Fbook already - lol.
Thanks and best wishes,
M J Webb

yes Jakob. Come out of the shadows and closer to this bonfire here. What's that? No, no, that's not a stake in the middle of the bonfire. That's our..uh...wishing pole. Yes.
See, you take a rope, and wrap it around yourself and the pole, then close your eyes and make a wish.
