I will be doing reviews on the rest of the books in the series as I finish them, but I would love to here what others think about it.

I just joined the group, I have written a SF book, but I won't spam you about that. I noticed this group is reading the "DoomsDay Book" I read that along time ago and thought it was excellent. I also like "Ender's Game" and the Dune series. I like to read outside of SF too. It just depends on the story. I like a lot of conflict, action, but not without the occasional break for reflection.
I'm also interested in reading new author's like myself.
Have a great day.
Cindy

Welcome Cindy and Anthony :)
Cindy, we do have an Authors section where you're free to post about your work. Just an fyi

Complete details are on the ROGO Program page of my Parsina Press site. Have fun, and pleasant reading!

Just joined the group and have been with Goodreads for a couple of months. I live in Ohio, relocated here from Southern Calif. about fifteen years ago. I really enjoy looking through site and getting suggestions for my next books to read. I enjoy reading Science Fiction and Fantasy, usually with some humor thrown in. My favorite books include To Say Nothing of the Dog and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan novels. I just finished reading Charles Stross' Laundry series, and think I am going to move on to Hellhole next! -Renee
Welcome Renee :)
Stephen, post that in our Author's section instead, please.

I'm a Canadian living in France, but I plan on returning home at the end of June -- can't wait! (Although France is pretty cool, too.) I'm not a writer or anything but I do have my own blog (http://caleighminshall.wordpress.com) and I write reviews for The Ranting Dragon (http://www.rantingdragon.com)
Nice to meet you! :) Favourite (fantasy) authors include Philip Pullman, Guy Gavriel Kay, Patrick Rothfuss, Naomi Novik, Garth Nix -- but I'm always open to new writers.
Welcome Caleigh. Bring me some authentic French Bread and a beret when you come back.

I just read a book, The 4-Hour Work Week, that said that we shouldn't identify ourselves by our jobs so I'm not going to say what I do, which is boring anyway and I'd like to think I'm not that boring.
Sometimes I feel like I am living a science fiction or fantasy life because I have a gigantic rodent roaming around my house and that is just not normal. No, I'm not crazy, there really is a giant rodent. He's a capybara and currently weighs about 60 lbs but he's putting on 2 lbs per week so that figure won't be accurate for very long.
I have written and self-published a book featuring capybaras called Celeste and the Giant Hamster.
I also write science fiction and have a short story coming out in the Aug. 2011 issue of Andromeda Spaceways In-Flight Magazine. Watch for it!
Welcome Melanie :)
I read that as 'chupacabra' for some damned reason, and was all "whaaaaaaaaat".
Then I realized I'm an idiot.

Name's Genia. I inhabit Israel - Jerusalemite by heart, though just at present I live in the center of the country. I am a horrible reader in the sense that if you only dangle a book in front of me, I will snatch at it, and not let go till I finished. I read anything that's been put to paper - and some things that exist only in electronic form - and that includes classics, non-fiction, mystery, historical, and, of course, sci-fi and fantasy.
Just recently, I've slurped up Connie Willis' newest; Blackout and All-Clear, and am going through Butcher's Codex Alera in lieu of brain candy.
So this is it. I shall be following the discussions, poking my long nose in and staying a while.
Welcome Genia :)
Enjoying the Codex Alera?

I'm new to goodreads and have been lurking on your forums the past few days. I'm 27 and absolutely love the science fiction and fantasy genres. I also read thrillers, horror and alternate history with some classics thrown in just for good measure.
I'm currently reading The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt, which also happens to be the first book I've tried from this author. I'm looking forward to reading with you all and discovering new authors.

Yeah, I think 'amusing' would be a good description of the Codex Alera series. I enjoyed them well enough, but they weren't anything extraordinary.
I've read through the entire Dresden files and love them, though.

Look forward to any recommendations, discussions, or criticisms.
Would also like recommendations for any sites that focus on classic/golden age sci-fi
Welcome Chris, i'm sure someone will be along to provide some decent recommendations :)

Yes, and since many of the members are writers, they'll be hawking their own books, Chris.
Sounds like you've selected a fine selection already. To keep your costs down, if you can deal with eBooks, you might try Baen's website; they often give stuff away. And of course, if you're fond of stuff that's out of copyright, Project Gutenberg has a lot of free stuff (not always pretty, but the words are there).
Amazon caries some free stuff for the Kindle, but it may be worth what you pay for it.
And, being a publisher, I'd love to send you to our website, but I won't (gotta show SOME class once in a great while ;-)
I am the author of the 2012 asteroid-impact novel Regolith (sign up for the giveaway!). I also have an autistic son, a masters in counseling, and I build oceanfront Caribbean condos.

Also, you really sound like a snake oil salesman there for some reason. Which I find amusing.

I would like to promote my own writing efforts if I could only find that "special folder" mentioned.
Hampton
Heyas Hampton, and welcome!
The 'special' folder is right here:

It's our "GoodReads Author's Books" folder. Feel free to post about your work in that area :)

I am a new author, with my book, Grave Is The Day, hitting the streets. Strictly a fan of both science fiction and fantasy, I hope to turn this hobby into something of a profession. Brad says to post my book in the right place, so you can look for it there.

No kidding, too bad I don't know how to make 'em.
I can make the ribbon and candy lei's, though!
I'm full of surprises.
Or something remotely like surprises.
Or just something that starts with S.
At any rate, welcome to SF&F Denae :)

I'm sure there are those here who would be happy to discuss that with you.
At length.

I used to read a lot of more Science-Fiction when I was younger, but Fantasy has kind of taken over in my reading for a while now, so my favorite authors tend towards that particular genre. Here are a few - and by no mean are they the only ones, just some that I've read more than one book by that I've loved:
Arthur C. Clark
Frank Herbert
George R.R. Martin
Guy Gavriel Kay
J.K. Rowling
J.R.R. Tolkien
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Margaret Atwood
Neil Gaiman
Patricia A. McKillip
Robin Hobb
Terry Pratchett

Just had to ask, didn't you Denae...
Also, welcome Xeyra :)

Peter S. Beagle has been a major influence. Nalo Hopkinson is in her own class. Gene Wolf is as beautiful as he is bizarre. You gotta love Princess Bride, even you don't obsess over it (and yes, I've been one of those people). Tanya Huff is hit or miss, but when she hits, she hits hard. Gaiman is getting a little too into himself of late but his early work is so heart-rendingly lyrical and original it is almost too much to read. I'll even give a props to Nix for Sabriel and Liriel, but, damn. What was he thinking on, like, The Rag Witch?
Good to be here.
