Aloha Welcome Mike and Joao!

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 74 comments Hello everyone. I am an author, but I don't write sci-fi (Not THAT creative!!) I love reading Sci-fi and fantasy though. I also do book reviews on a wide variety of subjects. I am sure, based on the age of most of you, that most of you have already read the Ender Series by Orson Scott Card, but for those of you who haven't, I absolutely LOVE his books!! I just re-baught the series and re-read Ender's Game for the 3rd time. It was so good that I made a youtube video review. You can look at it at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiPRiE...
I will be doing reviews on the rest of the books in the series as I finish them, but I would love to here what others think about it.

Welcome Joao :)

Cindy Borgne (cinders23) | 23 comments Hello everyone,

I just joined the group, I have written a SF book, but I won't spam you about that. I noticed this group is reading the "DoomsDay Book" I read that along time ago and thought it was excellent. I also like "Ender's Game" and the Dune series. I like to read outside of SF too. It just depends on the story. I like a lot of conflict, action, but not without the occasional break for reflection.

I'm also interested in reading new author's like myself.

Have a great day.

Cindy

Anthony DiCostanzo | 6 comments Hi everyone. New to the group and been in Goodreads about 6 months. I'm from NY. I love this site. I used to scour the net for book suggestions before here. So much easier this way. I love reading fantasy and sci fi with the occasional mainstream fiction thrown in the mix. Im reading Escaping Destiny because of someones suggestion on this forum and couldn't believe it had five stars. About a quarter in. Liking it so far.

message 1756: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Cindy and Anthony :)

Cindy, we do have an Authors section where you're free to post about your work. Just an fyi

message 1757: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Borgne (cinders23) | 23 comments Thanks Anthony, I'll have a look.

message 1758: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Goldin (stephengoldin) | 17 comments I've started a new program at my Parsina Press online bookstore called the ROGO Program. The acronym ROGO stands for Review One, Get One. The basic idea is simple: Read one of my books. Write a review of it. Post that review on at least 3 book-related sites. Let me know where the review appears. I'll give you a coupon for a free ebook of your choice from my list of participating titles. Repeat as necessary until you've read all of my books you can stand.

Complete details are on the ROGO Program page of my Parsina Press site. Have fun, and pleasant reading!

message 1759: by Renee (new)

Renee | 3 comments Hello all,
Just joined the group and have been with Goodreads for a couple of months. I live in Ohio, relocated here from Southern Calif. about fifteen years ago. I really enjoy looking through site and getting suggestions for my next books to read. I enjoy reading Science Fiction and Fantasy, usually with some humor thrown in. My favorite books include To Say Nothing of the Dog and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan novels. I just finished reading Charles Stross' Laundry series, and think I am going to move on to Hellhole next! -Renee

message 1760: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Renee :)

Stephen, post that in our Author's section instead, please.

message 1761: by Douglas (new)

Douglas Brown (douglasbrown) Thanks all for the welcomes and the well wishes. Nice to meet you all.

message 1764: by Caleigh (new)

Caleigh Minshall (caleighm) | 6 comments Hello everyone! I'm a long-time fantasy reader but I fell off the wagon for a few years, and now I'm trying to catch up. My mind is already boggled by all of the recommendations you've given me :)

I'm a Canadian living in France, but I plan on returning home at the end of June -- can't wait! (Although France is pretty cool, too.) I'm not a writer or anything but I do have my own blog (http://caleighminshall.wordpress.com) and I write reviews for The Ranting Dragon (http://www.rantingdragon.com)

Nice to meet you! :) Favourite (fantasy) authors include Philip Pullman, Guy Gavriel Kay, Patrick Rothfuss, Naomi Novik, Garth Nix -- but I'm always open to new writers.

message 1765: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Caleigh. Bring me some authentic French Bread and a beret when you come back.

message 1766: by Caleigh (new)

Caleigh Minshall (caleighm) | 6 comments haha -- Definitely. And would you like some delicious cheese to go with that?

message 1767: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, Caleigh. I would love some beignet with brie.

message 1768: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (typpy) | 24 comments Howdy all!

I just read a book, The 4-Hour Work Week, that said that we shouldn't identify ourselves by our jobs so I'm not going to say what I do, which is boring anyway and I'd like to think I'm not that boring.

Sometimes I feel like I am living a science fiction or fantasy life because I have a gigantic rodent roaming around my house and that is just not normal. No, I'm not crazy, there really is a giant rodent. He's a capybara and currently weighs about 60 lbs but he's putting on 2 lbs per week so that figure won't be accurate for very long.

I have written and self-published a book featuring capybaras called Celeste and the Giant Hamster.

I also write science fiction and have a short story coming out in the Aug. 2011 issue of Andromeda Spaceways In-Flight Magazine. Watch for it!

message 1769: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Melanie :)

I read that as 'chupacabra' for some damned reason, and was all "whaaaaaaaaat".

Then I realized I'm an idiot.

message 1770: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Me, myself and I.

Name's Genia. I inhabit Israel - Jerusalemite by heart, though just at present I live in the center of the country. I am a horrible reader in the sense that if you only dangle a book in front of me, I will snatch at it, and not let go till I finished. I read anything that's been put to paper - and some things that exist only in electronic form - and that includes classics, non-fiction, mystery, historical, and, of course, sci-fi and fantasy.

Just recently, I've slurped up Connie Willis' newest; Blackout and All-Clear, and am going through Butcher's Codex Alera in lieu of brain candy.

So this is it. I shall be following the discussions, poking my long nose in and staying a while.

message 1771: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Genia :)

Enjoying the Codex Alera?

message 1772: by Angelmass (new)

Angelmass | 13 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm new to goodreads and have been lurking on your forums the past few days. I'm 27 and absolutely love the science fiction and fantasy genres. I also read thrillers, horror and alternate history with some classics thrown in just for good measure.

I'm currently reading The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt, which also happens to be the first book I've tried from this author. I'm looking forward to reading with you all and discovering new authors.

message 1773: by [deleted user] (new)

hiyas Angelmass :)

message 1774: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin The Codex Alera (of which I read two books) is a nice enough series. I confess I've lost my taste for epic fantasy, and I much prefer Butcher's urban fantasy, Dresden Files. But Alera amuses me, which is definitely something.

message 1775: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I think 'amusing' would be a good description of the Codex Alera series. I enjoyed them well enough, but they weren't anything extraordinary.

I've read through the entire Dresden files and love them, though.

message 1776: by Chris (new)

Chris Kelly (darkcell) | 35 comments Hello everyone! My name is Chris and I'm new both to goodreads and this discussion group. I'm currently rediscovering my fiction roots after several years completing my B.A. and master's degrees which have left me little time for pleasure reading. In general, I enjoy speculative fiction - mainly Sci-Fi and Horror, and much less so, Fantasy. I'm currently trying to read the classics of Science Fiction that I've missed. I'm mainly focusing on books that interest me from David Pringle's list of 100 novels and other prominent lists. In particular, I'm trying to catch up on Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, etc.

Look forward to any recommendations, discussions, or criticisms.

Would also like recommendations for any sites that focus on classic/golden age sci-fi

message 1777: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Chris, i'm sure someone will be along to provide some decent recommendations :)

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 346 comments Ala wrote: "Welcome Chris, i'm sure someone will be along to provide some decent recommendations :)"

Yes, and since many of the members are writers, they'll be hawking their own books, Chris.

Sounds like you've selected a fine selection already. To keep your costs down, if you can deal with eBooks, you might try Baen's website; they often give stuff away. And of course, if you're fond of stuff that's out of copyright, Project Gutenberg has a lot of free stuff (not always pretty, but the words are there).

Amazon caries some free stuff for the Kindle, but it may be worth what you pay for it.

And, being a publisher, I'd love to send you to our website, but I won't (gotta show SOME class once in a great while ;-)

I am the author of the 2012 asteroid-impact novel Regolith (sign up for the giveaway!). I also have an autistic son, a masters in counseling, and I build oceanfront Caribbean condos. Regolith by Brent Reilly

Brent...

go to this thread and read it:

Also, you really sound like a snake oil salesman there for some reason. Which I find amusing.

message 1782: by F. (new)

F. | 1 comments Greetings, My name is Hampton and I am an alchol.....oops wrong meeting. Seriously though, I am a lifelong fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy having read more books than I could possibly even try to recount here or anywhere. My very first book, a children's fantasy called "Danny Meadow Mouse" started me reading in the early fifties. My current book is "Elfhunter" by C.S. Marks. I am reading more or less exclusively from my Kindle these days.

I would like to promote my own writing efforts if I could only find that "special folder" mentioned.

Hampton

message 1783: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Hampton, and welcome!

The 'special' folder is right here:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

It's our "GoodReads Author's Books" folder. Feel free to post about your work in that area :)

Michael Drakich (michaeldrakich) | 0 comments Hi Everyone,

I am a new author, with my book, Grave Is The Day, hitting the streets. Strictly a fan of both science fiction and fantasy, I hope to turn this hobby into something of a profession. Brad says to post my book in the right place, so you can look for it there.

message 1785: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Michael :)

message 1786: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Baranowski (daniwithtea) Hi everyone! I'm an avid (some might say obsessed) reader from Buffalo, NY. When I'm not reading, I'm running the show as a self-employed nutcase web designer. Looking forward to jumping in with both feet!

message 1787: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Danielle :)

message 1788: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Hello there! I'm Denae and I've been inflicted on you by Ala. Apparently this is a fun group or maybe he was just trying to sell me drugs again. As you might be able to tell, not feeling so serious right now. Anyway, I'm a nerd trapped in a human resources job. I'm also moving at the end of this month, so I may miss this month's reads but hope to be able to do May's. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

message 1789: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, all new members! Ala, you are terrific as a welcoming committee. All you need is some flower leis.

message 1790: by [deleted user] (new)

No kidding, too bad I don't know how to make 'em.

I can make the ribbon and candy lei's, though!

I'm full of surprises.

Or something remotely like surprises.

Or just something that starts with S.

At any rate, welcome to SF&F Denae :)

message 1791: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Oh dear, I just read that as S&M...I think it's time for me to take my drugs and try to sleep...

message 1792: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm sure there are those here who would be happy to discuss that with you.

At length.

With book sources and visual aids.

message 1793: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm going to flee into ambienland now...

message 1794: by Rita (new)

Rita (xeyra) | 8 comments Hi, I'm Rita, I'm a 29 years old reader from Portugal, and I have no idea if I've introduced myself in this group or not, because I've joined quite a few recently and I've landed in a confusing mess. :p

I used to read a lot of more Science-Fiction when I was younger, but Fantasy has kind of taken over in my reading for a while now, so my favorite authors tend towards that particular genre. Here are a few - and by no mean are they the only ones, just some that I've read more than one book by that I've loved:

Arthur C. Clark
Frank Herbert
George R.R. Martin
Guy Gavriel Kay
J.K. Rowling
J.R.R. Tolkien
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Margaret Atwood
Neil Gaiman
Patricia A. McKillip
Robin Hobb
Terry Pratchett

message 1795: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Xeyra, I welcomed you somewhere, but I'm not sure whether it's here. I have so many forums, I'm confused, too. You can never have too many welcomes. Welcome, Xeyra!

Just had to ask, didn't you Denae...

Also, welcome Xeyra :)

message 1800: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) | 14 comments Hey--thanks to my mom, I've been into fantasy reading and writing ever since I can remember. Just learned about this site from a friend. D.W. Jones and Raul Dahl kicked R.K. Rowlings' ass around the block before she ever thought of writing.

Peter S. Beagle has been a major influence. Nalo Hopkinson is in her own class. Gene Wolf is as beautiful as he is bizarre. You gotta love Princess Bride, even you don't obsess over it (and yes, I've been one of those people). Tanya Huff is hit or miss, but when she hits, she hits hard. Gaiman is getting a little too into himself of late but his early work is so heart-rendingly lyrical and original it is almost too much to read. I'll even give a props to Nix for Sabriel and Liriel, but, damn. What was he thinking on, like, The Rag Witch?

Good to be here.
