When you're in a discussion forum, above the listing(on the right side) is a little link that says "New Topic". Click on that, fill in the Title and body of the post, and make sure to select the correct Discussion Forum from the "folder" drop down menu.

David King (killie1981) Hi,I'm David and I'm a 30 year old living in not so sunny or warm Scotland. Just joined Goodreads as I started blogging about books a few weeks ago and have begun to uncover the wide world of book related internet communities such as this one through it.

Always loved Sci Fi & Fantasy books and my love of them drove me to doing a Physics with Space Science & Tecnology Degree... that wasn't as fun as reading the Sci-Fi novels anyway!

Currently trying to still read and post on my new blog and various groups like this one whilst dealing with a 19 month year old daughter!!

Anyway, hope to join in many discussions as I can!

Aloha Welcome, David!

message 1705: by Anne (new)

Anne (dragonbane) | 8 comments Hi,

I'm from England and probably of the oldest here at 60 and came to fantasy when I was about 30 having become bored reading mainstream books and wanted a change, picked up the Thomas Covenant books by Steven Donaldson and that was the start. It was great to find this place as although I have plenty of friends that read none read my kind of books so can't really discuss books with them but hope that has now changed

message 1706: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, Anne! I think a lot of us here have the same problem with finding like people to have discussions with.

Stuart Aken (stuartaken) | 18 comments Hi, and thanks for the invite. I'm returning to fantasy after an absence of some years. I read nothing but scif-fi and fantasy for a few years, in my teens and early twenties. But, since I was inspired to write a fantasy series, I've come back to read the contemporary stories. My 'to read' list has grown quite long, but the new Kindle allows me to read where I would otherwise be unable. So, I'll be watching the group's reading with interest and trying to catch up with the current scene.

Geoff (wwwgoodreadscomchiltsy) | 0 comments Hi,
My name is Geoff. I'm a teacher of English and live in Lincolnshire, England. I love books generally but I'm particularly fond of modern fiction and sci-fi. Favourite sci-fi authors: Philip K. Dick, Asimov, Pohl.

message 1718: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Aken (stuartaken) | 18 comments Sue's right, Anne. 60 is no age. I'm 62 and just coming back to fantasy after some years reading other things, and busy writing an adult fantasy novel.

message 1719: by Julian (new)

Julian Rosado-Machain | 6 comments 60's the new 40's and 40's the new 30's, at thirty you're just a kid... so there you go.

message 1720: by Aloha (new)

Aloha You're only as old as you feel. I know 40 somethings who are ready for the grave, and I know 80 somethings who are dynamic.

message 1721: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Aken (stuartaken) | 18 comments Me, too. And sometimes I feel 90, but most of the time I manage around 45.

message 1722: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 148 comments Age is deceptive. I'm 52 with a 98 year old back and knees and the mind of a 23 year old! Except when I forget things... -grin-

As in I can't remember if I introduced myself in this group! I'm Brett aka battlinjack and am a confirmed bookaholic. I've been reading since I was 4 or so and was introduced to Fantasy & Science Fiction in the first grade by the local librarian. I bless her all the time!
I started with ER Burroughs and Andre Norton. The librarian would save me the issues of the magazine Fantasy & Science Fiction from which I discovered so many great authors.

I have so many favorites that I usually just list authors.

The Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey
The Belgariad & Malloreon by David & Leigh Eddings
The Books of Amber by Roger Zelazny
The Ringworld series by Larry Niven
The Tenth Planet trilogy by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristine Kathryn Rusch
The Legacy Trilogy by Ian Douglas
The Rama Series by Arthur C Clarke & Gentry Lee

Okay...so this time I listed series instead of just authors. I didn't even realize I was doing that!

Some more favorites grabbed randomly off the shelves;

War World - William C Dietz
The Cat Who Walks Through Walls - Robert A Heinlein
Starship Troopers - Robert A Heinlein (much better than the movie!)
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A Heinlein
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams
Shaggy Planet - Ron Goulart
Systemic Shock - Dean Ing
Heavy Weather - Bruce Sterling
Magus Rex - Jack Lovejoy
An Exchange of Hostages - Susan R Matthews

message 1723: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, Brett. I think I saw you somewhere before? Or was it the white cat? Nope, I think it was you, the one with lots of comics. Didn't you participate in an argument in Fantasy Aficionados, or was it a contradiction?

message 1724: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (scarlettmoonlee) | 6 comments Hi y'all!

Jamie here, and I thought I'd introduce myself. I live in Australia, and I'm an avid reader. Someone introduced me to this site just a few months ago and ever since then, I've been addicted. I love this site!

Nonetheless... hope to make some friends out of this group and have some awesome discussions. :)

message 1725: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, Jamie! Love the cat picture. I've never seen so many cat pictures until I joined Goodreads. Book lovers alone with their cats and books. LOL I'm allergic to cats, so I will have to snuggle with my books. Maybe I'll get myself a big dog.

Saeed Sabbagh | 5 comments hi, my name is saeed sabbagh i am english speaking arab who loves to read scifi and fantasy books cant list all i have read because it is too long of list as i read at the rate of 5-8 books a month i am also an aspiring writer hopefully will be published soon. i have dyslexia doesn't effect my reading but my writing things down from thought is harder

message 1729: by Aloha (new)

Aloha Welcome, Alan and Saeed!

I have a friend who has the same dyslexia you have. He reads non-fiction like crazy, but has a hard time writing without mixing things up. And he only has to worry about his own language, English.

Keep working on it, Saeed. One of our authors (his first book is going through a rewrite, but we've accepted it) also has dyslexia. His wife proof reads his work and helps catch problems (which is something EVERY writer should do). Having worked with a couple of other people who are dyslexic, I can understand your problems. I can't begin to understand being dyslexic and working in a foreign language to boot. I salute your courage for taking this on.

I won't minimize the problems you'll face. Too many people with English as a first language, but no other challenges, can't break into print because they can't handle their own language well enough to be accepted for publication. We get a few manuscripts from people who don't speak English at home and most of them still can't write the language well enough. BUT once in a while, we find someone who can both write a good story and can do it in English (like a native speaker).

Good luck.

Douglas Brown (douglasbrown) My name is Douglas Brown. I'm a 37-year-old firefighter/paramedic by day and a fantasy author by night (or something like that). I'm happily married with a son and two dogs. I'm a huge fan of Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Brandon Sanderson. I cannot wait until Game of Thrones begins on HBO.
My favorite book is probably "On Writing" by Stephen King. I love how he teaches while telling the story of his horrific accident. It is one of the few books I've read more than 3 times and will likely read again.
It is nice to meet you all.

How do you mean 'or something like that'? Something cross-genre?

Paul Baker (pablano) | 15 comments I was born and raised in Nebraska, but have lived variously in Colorado, South Carolina, Virginia, Germany, for 18 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, including 4 wonderful years in Chinatown - and now Santa Fe, New Mexico.

My hobbies include music (listening, playing guitar, singing and writing), movies (watching and studying), Trek (TV, film and books), blogging, and, of course, reading (science fiction, native americana, history, biography, psychology and literature). IN addition, I am a Top Chef junkie. It's about the TV I watch.

Although I currently work as a project manager for a surveying company, I am also attempting to open a vintage science fiction online bookstore.

Aloha Aw, come on, Ala. Stop that! You're really hurting my food supply. Stop warning them, will ya? And don't mention the word "steer." It's really reminding me that my supply of livestock is depleting because of you. Where's my butcher knife? I'm going to have myself a Samoan tropical delight for a snack.

message 1748: by Mike (last edited Mar 21, 2011 11:19PM) (new)

Mike Longenecker | 1 comments Dear Everyone,
My name is Mike Longenecker and I'm the illustrator/editor of Dr Plasse's debut novel 'Ravenwild'.

We would like to tell you about the first book in the Ravenwild series. Although billed as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel, the story really belongs to the Fantasy genre. The leading character is a teenage girl named Stephanie, the daughter of Dr. Blake Lee Strong, who is transported by an underhanded Wizard to a dystopian world along with the entire Strong family and two friends. Life-and-death struggles, skullduggery, romance, and heroism fill this larger-than-life saga. .

(over three dozen illustrations in this 496 page novel by me)

Short synopsis:
Returning home from another grueling shift of E.R. work, Dr. Blake Lee Strong comes across a downed motorcyclist and stops to help, but little does he know that his world and that of his family will soon be turned upside down. Duped into being transported to another planet called Inam'Ra, Dr. Strong and his family are thrust into a medieval world populated by Trolls, Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves, Humans and other alien beings. An epic odyssey begins as the Strong family fights for not only their own survival, but also for the continued existence of the citizens of Ravenwild.

We've got a section for Authors to post about their books, Mike. We prefer if self promotional stuff is kept there, so as not to bog down other threads.

But welcome, all the same.

message 1750: by Jomy (new)

Jomy (zmerydwagon) | 1 comments Hi,
My name's João and I'm from Oporto, Portugal. I'm 24 and I love reading, mostly sci-fi and fantasy. But fantasy above anything else. I started when I was like 14 or 15 with Harry Potter (not exactly a fantasy book but it was what brought me into reading fantasy books anyway) and since then I've read authors such as Jordan, Feist, Lovecraft, Hobb, Salvatore, Paolini, Filipe Faria, Martin, Nicholson, Liam Hearn, Carey, amongst others. I share my passion for books with many others like writing, cinema, music, PCs (games, hardware, software, you name it), TV series, photography... so I don't read as much as I'd like to... but I still read enough.

As for my favourite fantasy book so far, I'd have to say Martin's AOIAF, even tho I am currently STILL reading his 3rd book LOL.
