Can anyone explain how exactly the book club works? I keep seeing different titles for December depending on whether I'm on the mobile app or the desktop site. Which books are you all planning to read for December? I'd like to get my hands on them now, if I can. Thank you in advance!

So right now they’re rereading Anansi Boys and Assassin's Apprentice. Starting December 15th they’ll be rereading Cloud Atlas and The Goblin Emperor.
Ashley's got this. I'm goin' back to bed ;-)
That is exactly how it works though! At any given time we're discussing 4 books. One sci-fi, one fantasy, and two books we've already read that people expressed an interest in discussing.
We vote every month on the next month's books (usually one in a theme and one from a random selection) and once every six months on which re-reads we'd like to attempt.
Then of course there's also several in-group buddy reads (Stormlight Archive, sounds like Boy On The Bridge will be starting up, Once and Future King is on line for next month...)
It can seem overwhelming, but really we only read two books a month. People then use the group as a launch pad for finding others interested in the same books, which is highly encouraged!

Speaking of TOaFK, I just got my copy yesterday so I’ll be ready to go! Should we start a new thread for the discussion, and if so in what folder? “Side reads” I guess?

I think we're thinking of retiring the Side Reads folder, so I would recommend "what else are you reading" as the home for our imminent discussion!! Can't wait!

Ok folks this morning I locked into my email and found out that I won the following: Scorched Shadows Not bad and I'm not complaining. As this series is on my TBR list. Now I just have to work on getting the first 6 books in the series as this was the last one. LOL One way to get you to spend more money on books.
Hey guys, my name is Larry and I am 43 years old and from Newfoundland, Canada. I have two kids. I've been reading Action/Thriller/Suspense books since I was a teenager. Watching Game of Thrones has inspired me to start a Fantasy series so here I am.

Welcome welcome! There are a lot of political intrigue fantasy books, Larry, I hope you find a good path to the dark side some new favorites!
And Brendan, Saga is on my list for next year :) I was trying to wait until it had a goodly number of issues--I'd heard it got sad but I can wait no longer!

Hey Allison, if you don’t mind I’d rather you create the thread for our Once and Future King discussion..just ‘cause I’m still new at this and don’t want to mess anything up, plus I don’t know when you’d want to open it.. I plan on starting the book tomorrow though! I’m so excited! I just know I’ll love it!

Sure, I can do that. The only things we're really "strict" about is that the group reads are limited to official threads and that self promotion is in the author folder. Everything else, if it's in the wrong place I just move it to its proper folder. But I'm happy to start the thread up. I'll do it now :)

Great, thanks!
Nick, your comments are being deleted because self-promotion is not allowed outside of the designated folder. Please take a look at group rules re: author self-promotion.
Welcome, James! The comments for Red Sister have been overwhelmingly positive so far, really excited to hear what you think!
I did Strider's Riddle as my favorite poem in 8th grade. I turned out fine ;-)

Well now sounds like you and I got the same taste in our genre of books. You ever read R.A. Salvatore or Terry Brooks? Both of which I highly recommend. If go with R.A. Salvatore please do yourself a favor and start with Homeland. It sets things up beautifully for the rest of the series.
Hello, my name is Alif! I'm from Indonesia! I haven't read many fantasy or science fiction books, but I'm keen to expand my bookshelf with many good fantasy books out there, especially books with a wide world/universe, such as Lord of The Rings or A Game Of Thrones . Any recommendation about it?
Hello. My name is Maria-Sophia and I come from Athens, Greece. I am working on my thesis at the moment which concerns young female rebellion in two contemporary dystopian and sf novels, "Starters" by Lissa Price and "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. Thank you!
Welcome Alif! Gosh, there are so many! It sounds like you might enjoy epic fantasy (good choice!) so here's a link with some really good options.

If you've listed some books you read and liked, you can set up a topic for some specific-to-you suggestions, too!

Hi Maria-Sophia, welcome! That thesis sounds really cool! I'm sorry to ask in your first post, but we do not allow self-promotion outside of our author thread, so can you please remove the portion about your blog? It's very kind of you to offer, but we find it is only fair that we curtail that across the board. Thank you!

Salvatore excellent author of Fantasy fiction especially with Drizzt who is one of the Main characters in the series. The first book of his that I'd recommend is Homeland.
Then there is Jeff Wheeler I just finished up his kingfountain series. It was very well done.
Terry Brooks is a 3rd author for which I'd recommend to you. They should give you some great reading material for a little bit at least. And as I come across more I'll keep you posted.
Hi, my name is Karlin and I'm from Indonesia! I just made my new goodreads account a few days ago because the previous one was a total mess and I haven't read much these days because school is eating me. I'm currently working on Red Queen but I'm kinda bored and I don't want to fall into a reading slump so if you have any recommendations about any sci-fi or fantasy book with a little bit of romance in it, please hit me up! I'm a slow reader but I'd love to try and read more books other than my textbooks. Thank you very much and nice to meet you all!

Ok Thank you!!!!
Welcome, Karlin!
We just finished Six of Crows which was fun fantasy with a bit of romance to it. There are so many great options though, if you want to make a post in the "lost books and recommendations" folder about types of books you've read and liked, people here are usually pretty great at suggesting things. I personally just added 40 new books to my shelves because of a request I made :)
Glad to have you!

Hello fellow SF and Fantasy fans! My name is Barbara living in the north of Scotland. Born is the sixties and been reading SF&F since I "borrowed" my older brother's Narnia books when I was eight. I was the sort of child that read anything: pony books, Enid Blyton, Tolkien, back of cereal packets and as I had 3 older brothers I got through a lot of war stories. Currently reading Kameron Hurley's Bel Dame Apocrypha, the Mongoliad series, and a couple of short story collections. My TBR stack is a ridiculous length, it does have a sort of order, but anything new by Charles Stross or Alastair Reynolds will go straight to the front of the queue.
How do you like the Mongoliad series? I bought the whole series on a whim and haven't been motivated to start it.

I read all the Hardy boy nancy drew mysteries and anything else for which I could get my hands on growing up. Not much of an SF buff but love Fantasy fiction. Look forward to chatting with you more.
Hi again, An! Sorry, your second intro post had a bit too much self-promotion but we're always glad to have people interested in talking books!
Hi A, welcome! Please check our policy on self-promotion. Always glad to have people who wish to discuss new books :)
Hello fellow Sci-fi/fantasy readers! I made my introductions a few months ago but I wanted to leave this post here.I've completed 2 reading challenges this year and will surpass my Goodreads reading goal by quite a bit. While this is all good news, my reading goals and challenges have made me lean towards shorter books and shy away from ones longer than 600 or 700 pages. As is usually the case, my favorite sci-fi/fantasy books tend to be on the longer side. To encourage me to worry less about the book count and focus more on reading what interests me, I created a new group for people to set up a pages reading goal to potentially be done concurrently with one of the many other reading challenges available or just for fun.
If you are interested, the link is below! Happy Reading!

Welcome Jane. I'm an author as well but new to Sci fi. It's been a tremendous education so far and I've been introduced to some good reads. What prompted you to start writing?
Hello! I'm Anupriya, fairly new to Goodreads and to this group! I'm from India, though currently in Indiana USA. I've been a huge SF fan since I stumbled on to a copy of 'Prelude to Foundation' by Isaac Asimov when I was in the 5th grade. I'll read pretty much anything as long it has good grammar and limited cliches but SF (and a bit of fantasy) is my true home! Huge fan of Asimov, Clarke, and all the classic biggies but I'm hoping to be introduced to some more contemporary SF through the fine members of this group.Currently in a short stories phase, so I'm reading Other Earths and also (re-re-re-re-re-)reading The Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction (probably my favorite anthology ever).
Welcome Anupriya! People around here have been making noise about doing some short stories/anthologies on the side. I hope maybe you help spur them to do it! And I do have a very new scifi for us to start out 2018--the group will be reading Ninefox Gambit. I've heard it's sort of a polarizing book though, so I hope you love it!
Hi everyone! Nice to meet you (: My name is Sivan and I'm an author / reader. (and marriage consultant.
I joined Goodreads a few months ago and I really like the atmosphere! (Both from the reader's & writer's end).
I'm a member in the "Sci-Fi and fantasy" and "existential book club" groups over here.
I have just started writing my new book (will be happy to give you a taste soon).
Also writing a bit in my Goodreads personal blog… not that often but you're all invited (:
My first book is: "THE CONDUCTOR - Birth Rate: 0"
It is a dystopian FANTASY which involves a psychological- existential point of view.
As a fantasy reader – I love any story with a supernatural aspect (not zombies but spirits and magic workers) I don't know why (: and also epic sagas and mythology.
In the Sci-Fi area I like anything with experiments of the "unknown" and off course dystopian / apocalypse stories!
Looking forward to meet you all and chat around…
Welcome Sivan and Iona! You'll find this to be a very talkative group that loves books. Hope to see you in discussion!
Hi Iona...have you read “Bleed”? It is a fun and weird take on the Zombie Apocolypse with a great female lead.
Hi, My name is Meredith. I've been lurking here for a while following the discussions. I want to be more active and participate in some of the challenges next year, so I thought I should actually introduce myself!
I have really gotten into SciFi and Fantasy over the past several years, reading all different categories. Some favorite authors: Seanan McGuire, John Scalzi, NK Jemisin, Connie Willis. I'm also a big reader of mysteries (historical, forensic, cozies - especially with cats).
Hi!

Always look forward to hearing from new members. You like fantasy try R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series or Terry Brooks or Jeff wheeler to name a few good ones. Look forward to hearing from you more.
