Steve Beattie (TaintedChihuahua) | 15 comments Hello - I'm Steve an Author and Sci-fi fan from Watford, England.

I'm not new to internet forums and chatrooms, in fact I've made many friends through them. They've been part of my life since 2002.

I tend to read a lot of Autobiographies and WW2 history books. However saying that one of my favorite books is 'Go, Go, Go!' written by Rusty Firmin, which is the real story behind the Iranian Embassy siege in London during the 80's.

Now that may seem strange, a Sci-fi writer who doesn't (yet) read Sci-fi, but I try to keep my stories believable and original, hence my interest in reality.

Outside of that, most of my life has been spent in the UK home improvement industry in design and installation/project management. I also have my own hobby business selling my own range of multi-media hobby kits. Like most Englishmen, I follow football, play golf and can always be found in a pub.

So in closing, that's me and I hope to able to contribute, share, and enjoy this forum.

Steve, AKA - Tainted Chihuahua

Wendy | 33 comments Welcome everyone. Steve, I am curious. In the US we have "bars" which are 21 and over only and tend to close around 1am or 2am. Fun can Include karoke, open mike night, trivia, live bands, juke box music, DJ, darts, pool (billards), tv & of course alcohol, (beer, bad wine, hard liqueur)- some sports bars allow kids. What do English pubs consist of?

Jane Vergara (jeinsedai) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Jane.  Reading is also my hobby and I like fantasy books because they allow me to dream about a world that's full of surprises and powers and magical powers.  In particular, it was Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series that got me hooked on fantasy.  And then I tried Terry Pratchett, and enjoyed the humor, although truth be told, I only managed to read two of his books.
Earlier this year, I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane and was not so impressed.  It reminded me of A Wrinkle in Time.
Then I delved into other genres, young adult and memoir.  But I'd like to go back to fantasy and so finally, after being a member of this group for so long, and reading the posts, I'm introducing myself.  I wish to get really good ideas about what books to read next.
And then, I haven't been reading much science fiction.  My last memories were Jurrasic Park, back when it was Michael Crichton who still dominated the sci-fi world.  And also, Sheldon's Doomsday Conspiracy (or is this really classified as sci-fi?).
Anyway, thanks for creating this group and letting me be part of it.  Looking forward to joining the discussions and reading with you!
Cheers! =)

Jennifer Bradley (Jennnanigans) | 13 comments Hi Jane! Nice to meet you!
Out of curiosity, which two Terry Pratchett books did you read?

message 5307: by Jane (new)

Jane Vergara (jeinsedai) | 3 comments Hello Jennnanigans. Thanks for welcoming me in the group. I read Guards! Guards! And Pyramids. Back when i didn't know they were part of a series. LOL.

message 5308: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Bradley (Jennnanigans) | 13 comments Ah, gotcha! I resisted the Discworld for years for no good reason and then last summer started with Guards Guards!, and proceeded (ha!) to consume the rest of the series. Haven't finished the Wizards books yet or the gods books, but the rest of his series are some of my absolute favorite books. Just throwing in my two cents! :D I am intending to start the Wheel of Time (eventually) but my to-read pile keeps growing!

S.A. Hoag (goodreadscomsahoag) | 1 comments Hello everyone, I'm new here and to Goodreads. I'm addicted to Sci Fi and writing, and the two obsessions have resulted in books.

I'm originally from Colorado and currently living in the southwest desert of New Mexico. I've also lived in Texas and Michigan. I have a husband (hi Jim!), three kids, a son-in-law and the most awesome grandbaby. Besides writing, I do lapidary and stargaze. Astronomy, not the other kind.

I read a lot, too. I'll be stalking the group for new books.

PS - my first name is Sheila!

message 5310: by Jane (new)

Jane Vergara (jeinsedai) | 3 comments Ha! Thanks for your inputs, Jennnanigans! Funny that out of so many TP books we got to read first the same one. :) anyway, i highly suggest you read The Wheel of Time series. I have to warn you thiugh that it is addictive. I read the entire thing 3 times already. LOL.

Hi S, welcome to the group.

Bruce (banlohannon) | 10 comments Greetings from The People's Republic of Austin, last bastion of hope, truth, and freedom in the heart of the sprawling suburban beast known as Texas! I'm a sci/fi and fantasy lover and look forward to figuring out what I've been missing, because I suspect there's a bunch of great books out there that I know nothing about. Favorite sci/fi read of the last couple of years: The Wind-up Girl. Favorite horror/fantasy: Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead. Most recent horror/fantasy read: Frankenstein. Looking for a good space opera that runs somewhere shy of the usual 600-plus pages. I am a slow reader!

Thanks Jack. I also really like the much-maligned film version, "The Thirteenth Warrior." It's kind of hard to find these days though.

I suspect I've seen it seven or eight times now. Love all the fog and muck and heroic music. Vladimir Kulich is a great Beowulf.

BR Kingsolver (brkingsolver) | 7 comments Hi, I'm BR Kingsolver. I've been reading science fiction and fantasy since I was in junior high school. Started with Norton, Heinlein and van Vogt, have read most of the classics. Began reading epic fantasy with Tolkien, Silverberg, Eddings, Jordon, etc. Got turned on to urban fantasy a few years ago.

I've published seven books, five of them classed as science fiction/urban fantasy. I'm currently writing an epic science fiction/fantasy space opera.

Joined the group hoping to get some tips on newer sci-fi authors.

I am from Birmingham UK and enjoy movies and running as much as getting lost in a good book.

I love most types of fiction and fantasy/Sci Fi tick my good boxes.

Currently listening to the Stand audiobook and finding it excellent. I am reading Wool on my Kindle and the physical edition of American Gods. I tend to always have 3 methods of new worlds open to me.

Looking forward to reading reviews and recommendations :-)

Scott Foley (scottfoley) | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Scott, I joined Goodreads a few years ago but haven't spent much time here (been busy writing - I'm a fantasy author as well as a keen reader of fantasy).

Finally got round to joining a few groups and looking forward to meeting people here and trying a few new reads.

I'm a big fan of writers including Tolkien, Raymond E Feist, George R.R. Martin, Stephen Donaldson, Tad Williams, David Gemmell and more recently Patrick Rothfuss and Peter V Brett. Not so keen on the sci-fi side. Book recommendations for other authors kindly received :-)

Anyway, that's all from me. Just wanted to say hello!

Lucky you! Birmingham was 'the place to be' for F/SF readers a few years ago, and I think it still is.
I moved away nearly 30 years ago, lost a lot of contacts - the move was good in many ways, but I still miss some old friends from that area. Hit the web, find the Birmingham Science Fiction Group - they used to meet at Canon Hill Park, I think they are now out at Halesowen. They have regular meetings, and lots of contacts - you could find yourself meeting some VERY important people in the SF/fandom fields

Michelle Nogales (mnogales) Alice ("Right now I am not reading even though I have some fabulous books waiting for me on the Kindle...is it possible to have reader's block?"):

I definitely have a case of reader's block. I am trying very hard to read The Bone Clocks, which I was looking forward to for a very long time, and I just can't make myself read more than a page or two at a time. I've been at it for a month and am not more than a quarter of the way through. Do I just dislike this book--? I feel I *ought* to love it! Maybe I should take a break from it and just come back to it--but I may never return. And I know I had to get about a quarter of the way through Cloud Atlas before I was really hooked.

All of this is just to say hello, and welcome!

Nick | 3 comments Hi Everyone,
My name is Nick. I am 24 years old and live in New Hampshire. I have always enjoyed reading ever since I was little. I just recently got my first Kindle/eReader for my birthday from my wonderful girlfriend and that is partially why I signed up with Goodreads. I would come here to check out some reviews and maybe find some new books, but I never thought about creating an account. So after I got my kindle I decide why not lets try it. Some of my favorite books have always been in the science fiction and fantasy genre. I found this group and thought it looked like a good one to try out. I look forward to seeing what awesome books we will be reading.

Welcome to the circus, Nick. Kindle is a fun gadget, and Goodreads will fill it up quick for sure! Hope you have a great time here.

Nina (the fussy reader) (ninathefussyreader) I'm Nina and love reading books.
I like sharing and receiving book recommendations and reviewing books.

I'd love to make some friends on here and talk to some like-minded people who share my love of books.

I'm happy to read anything and am trying to work my way through the classics, but my favourite genres to read are Fantasy and Historical Fiction.

I buy more books than I have time to read, but don't we all? I love collecting really old books too, and get super exciting when rooting through a secondhand bookstore or charity shop and I come across an antique or first edition.

My 'to read' list is long and my 'to buy' list is even longer, but I'll get there sooner or later. :)
