Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments You guys are on fire! I don't know if I can keep up, but I'll try!

Mary You can! We made the reading dates a while away so everyone can have time to digest SD :)

Kris (krisrabberman) | 313 comments Mod
Thanks for putting this up so quickly, Mary!

Jason, it will be great to have you with us. Plenty of time!

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments I know, I feel very laggy with Savage Detectives but I can be more involved now that I'm actually reading it actively.

Mary I think I'm going to slow down with the last 100 pages or so of SD, I feel like I've been reading it too fast lately. I might give it a couple of days break and come back to it on the weekend.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments I'll leave it to you and Kris to do a little research on the best translation. That way we can order the right one (or in my case, reserve a library copy of the right one!).

Traveller (moontravlr) | 13 comments Ooh, exciting! Wonderful, guys! Thanks so much for the invitation!

I've not read this yet, so this is the perfect incentive for me to pluck this out from lower down on my TBR!

Shamus McCarty | 2 comments I like this place, I’m all for any group that encourages drinking.

Arthur Graham I'll do my best to make some time for this one - the only Bulgakov I ever read was Heart of a Dog, which I really enjoyed.

message 10: by Richard (new)

Richard Derus (expendablemudge) I am the *world's*worst* group reader, but I'll try.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments I would love for Steve H. to join us, but I know he has an aversion to group reads. Can we get Jay Rubin on board if Steve says no??

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) Since you've given us enough lead time I should be able to read along. Thanks for the invite.

Thanks, Mary and MB! I'm doing some research on translations now, and I hope group members who may have already read M&M or who have other friends who have will pipe up with recommendations on the translation thread, too.

Mark (markmckeejr) | 37 comments Ohboyohboybohboy. Finally, a chance to finish this one! Back in '09, I picked up the Peaver/Volhonsky (prolly murdered the spelling there) translation when my sis and I went to meet Lauren Conrad at a bookstore in Memphis. Brought it home, read the first section, and never got round to the second. It was very good, I remember. And funny. Dark, dark humor.

Thanks for the invite, Kris and Mary!

Maybe if we offer tofu and a cat?

Mark (markmckeejr) | 37 comments What you gonna do with that cat Jay Rubin?

Terry (dulac3) | 12 comments Thanks for the invite, I have wanted to get to this one for awhile now.

There is no Kindle version for this, unfortunately, my friend. I already checked. :)

Kate | 4 comments I am so excited! And here is my favorite Margarita recipe (purists, beware: you will likely be deeply disappointed and/or offended:)

In a pitcher, mix:

1 frozen canister of Minute Maid Limeade
1 12 oz mexican beer, Like Sol or Pacifica.
1/2 to 1 full limeade canister equivalent of tequila, depending on your personal tequila tolerance (midshelf works best)
Lemon/Lime soda to taste.

Pour over ice in a salt rimmed glass. Drink while reading.

Richard Derus (expendablemudge) OOOOOOOOOOO

Gotta try this one...sounds fast and kicky!

message 24: by Jason (new) - rated it 1 star

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments Yeah, I'm a purist and I have to say that actually sounds pretty good. I think as long as it's not made from a pre-mixed concentrate, I'm good.

Christopher (chriswinters) Howdy everybody,

This is one of those that I've been meaning to read for awhile, so I'm looking forward to it now! Good books are always better when you can discuss them with good people.

Megan Baxter | 4 comments Thanks for the invite - never read it, but I'm looking forward to reading along!

Lawyer (goodreadscommm_sullivan) Thanks for the invitation, Kris. This is one I've meant to read for many years. A group read may be just the motivation I need to do so. It's about time I left the Southern clime for a change of air. It's the humidity, you know.

But then why use a margarita glass? I find that kitchen water glasses are ideal for whisky drunks.

I myownself need sweetness when tequila's involved, after the memorable Night of Eleven Mexican Snowshoes.

I find that adding a glass to the whiskey drink not only impedes the efficiency of whiskey consumption on the front end, but also on the back end, when you have to pick up the broken shards of your glass off of the floor. Bottles are easier to hold, have a much greater whiskey in mouth:whiskey on shirtfront ratio, and, when you pass out in a puddle of your own tears on your kitchen floor, do not break quite as easily.

Frozen lime-aide is not terribly sweet, and the lemon lime soda is easily replaced with lemon/lime seltzer water, which is also pleasing and refreshing.

Richard Derus (expendablemudge) Heck Arthur, I don't even own margarita glasses, silly effete things. I use double old-fashioned glasses and drink 'em OTR.

Kate, I think I'll substitute bitter lemon or tonic. Probably bitter lemon.

oooh .. . the bitter lemon sounds awesome. I am also anti-margarita glass, myself.

Arthur Graham Richard wrote: "I don't even own margarita glasses, silly effete things."

Nothing but old jam jars in my cabinet, I'm afraid. I seem to recall a few champagne flutes sharing that space for a while, around the time I got married, but it didn't take long for the jars to gang up on them.

message 39: by Richard (new)

Richard Derus (expendablemudge) I think we've got ~30 champagne flutes. About the same on colored-glass cased cut crystal hock glasses. Not so much as ONE decent DOF or highball glass. Oh I tell a lie! I got six 1950s nuclear-power decorated highballs when I turned 50. In their gold wire caddy! So cool.

I have a friend who actually made these as a summer job when he was in college: http://www.partywiththis.com/Beer-Can... (I'm not sure how he listed the job on his resumé.)

Note that you could drink your refreshing alcoholic beverage of choice (two servings at a time) while leaving your hands free to hold your book, turn pages, etc. And imagine how erudite you would look!

Madeleine (titular_line) | 14 comments Ian wrote: "And boobz."
Damn it, I was actually going to say that, too. The one time I keep mum about my mammary love....

But yes. Raise it up for the tittaaaaays.

Mayhaps it moved to another boobshelf?

Ian "Marvin" Graye | 68 comments It was the second of a pair that I've owned. I mightn't have put it away. It mightn't have been ready to join the other books. They like being singled out in the shop, but they're not always shelfish when you first bring them home.

For a while, the intro posts were coming so quickly that it was impossible for me to reply to them without filling up this thread with replies. I just want to thank everyone for joining the group! I'm so glad to see so many friends here, and I am looking forward to exploring The Master and Margarita (and drink recipes, etc.) with you all.

Stephen M | 50 comments Another group read? Dang, goodreads is the best.

Given my terrible track record for group reads, I can't make any promises on this one, but I've been quite interested in this book for a while, ever since s.penke reviewed it. Thanks for the invite.

message 49: by Jason (new) - rated it 1 star

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments Here's a challenge. Can anyone find a Penky review that doesn't make you want to run out and read the book? Maybe we need to open up a separate thread for this...

He makes me panicky, like I'll never live long enough to read all those amazing books he reads!!
