Did the movie do justice for the book?

I thoughly enjoyed the book. The charactors became very real. We rented the movie and friends and family watched it..in fact one friend found the recipe on line and brought the chocolate pie. I think the movie was great and the the charactors were chosen wisely. O

no movie ever really justifies the book but compared to most i thought that the movie did a good job of following the story line and the actors were great!

No, the book was way better. i don't think i would've liked the movie at all if i hadn't read the book

The Book was way better !!!!

I loved the book, enjoyed the film BUT Skeeter was too pretty; the actor tried hard but didn't quite manage to convey her gawkiness. Aibileen was perfect for me but Minnie not nearly bolshie enough, a much cosier portrayal than in the book. And the episode of Constantine's daughter was changed out of all recognition - presumably because it was too complicated to explain briefly.

I think the movie did a great job. All of the actors were wonderful. I cried through most of it, and my having read the book was part of that!

I saw the movie about 8 times before i even read the book. I didn't want to ruin the movie, because I knew the book would be better. Of course it was I felt enough emotion to cry in the movie and in the book. So much detail can make you cry as much as the background music can. The book had so many more scenes i wish were added and i feel some small details should have made their way into the movie. Over all I loved both and would recommend neither one over the other.

The book, for me, was great...best I have read for a while. The movie did ok by Hollywood standards however nothing on the book. The film works lightly with only a hint of depth and then tries to compensate in certain parts, ending up with an inconsistent result overall. Ultimately the movie is fine for what it is however for a great story with fabulous characters in a historically significant time.....the book wins.....

The film really did do the book justice. I thought both were amazing

I think the movie brought out the majority of the high points of the book...loved the book....

I think it was good. Of course, the movie NEVER is exactly like the book, but it was ok. The only thing that had me like ''WTF?'' is that, umm, the help that the protagonist grew up with(the one that plays Emma Stone in the movie), she was supossed to have a white girl, but presented her in the movie as a black girl like her mom.

I though the movie definitely did the book justice--it followed the book pretty accurately, and the characters were well-chosen. There were some differences between how I had imagined some of them, but I suppose that's different for everyone.
Bottom line: movie was great, but I'd recommend to read the book before you watch it.

Loved them both !!

I cried when I read the book. I always cry when i read, hear or think about that time period. The movie did well for a movie. The characters were cast well and the movie didn't mess up the story line. All in all, the movie and the book are a good 1-2 punch. I enjoyed them both.

I loved the book. I found the movie to be a little lackluster and left out some of the best parts from the book.

I saw the movie and read the book and like the other comments, I agree, the book is always better .. Movies are made to attract and show the drama of certain parts of the book... "Into The Wild" was another good book that had the movie not twisted certain parts of the book, it still would of had the same impact.,. I was disappointed in it and the fact it was way over 2 hrs.

Truthfully, I actually liked the movie better than the book, which... well, frankly never happens. Although, I saw the movie first and then read the book, so maybe that had something to do with it?

I really liked the book, but the movie was rather disappointing.

I think the film was FANTASTIC.

I watched the movie first, so I ended up enjoying it. However, if i had read the book first, I probably would find myself agreeing with most of you [that are saying no].

I thought this book was just fabulous. I laughed and cried and didn't want it to end. The movie was good. There is only so much you can fit into a couple of hours viewing. The acting was just spot on. Just as I imagined the book when reading. The scene with "the terrible awful" that Minnie did was hilarious.

I loved the book but I was disappointed by the movie. In my opinion, the actors were well chosen, however, characters could have been developed a lot more. Besides, I think some important parts were skipped or barely mentioned, like for example, Medgar Evers' death or Constantine's story.
I was much more moved by the book.

Nope, the movie didn't do the book justice. The book was better. The cut/changed so many details that for me were important for the story.

The book for was far better in my view. I loved the different perspectives that the book told. That made it so entertaining.

The movie wasn't terrible but I definitley didn't feel it was worth all of the hype it was given and had the story been something else I don't think it would have been nominated for any awards. I think it was nominated mostly because of the content. The actresses were decent but when I saw it I didn't think it would have been nominated for anything.

I saw the movie before I read the book. I loved the movie, I thought that it was really well done and the acting was really good. Then I read the book and I loved that too. I thought both were fantastic.

GREAT book! The movie was also very well done. I was more disturbed by the book, where as I feel the movie may have glossed over some of parts that reallly hit home.

I thought the movie did the most justice to the book it could. The only difference I found was that with a limited time frame some of the lesser plot points seemed rushed.

I read the book and saw the movie. I thought the movie was sort of rushed and wasn't as detailed as the book. The reason why Constantine left seemed different to me. In the book it was because Rachel was black but she was acting like she was white and ruining the event set up by Skeeter's mom. In the movie she didn't appear that way at all and it seemed the reason she left was different too. In the book it talked on and off about Skeeter and Johnny's relationship but in the movie they weren't shown together very much. Skeeter’s mother ended up coming to her rescue at the end of the movie movie but in the book her mother not as involved with Skeeter's beliefs.

I liked the movie. I think they did the characters justice. But I LOVED the book. To me, the movie just didn't capture the tenseness and seriousness of what they were doing. Black maids meeting with a white woman to tell stories about the white families they worked for? They could have been arrested - or even killed - for that. The book portrayed that very well - I feel that the movie sugar-coated it a bit. So, as much as it was an enjoyable movie (and I would have liked it whether I read the book or not), the book was WAY better.

The movie was so much better than the book. I would've never picked up the book if I hadn't watched the movie. I only read up to Chapter 5 of the book. It was very boring and did not grasp my attention like the movie did. As soon as I saw The Help on my tv screen, I couldn't take my eyes off of it!

No - this is a fantastic book. The movie was pretty good, but the detail in books always wins out.

I thought the movie was very well done, what I loved the most about it was probably how amazing the background music was for almost all the scenes. I would totally recommend the book and the movie to anyone really interested in what life was like for black women back then.

I thought the movie did a pretty good job. I had a bunch of time in between reading the book and watching the movie, but did notice some differences, though overall very much enjoyed the movie. To me, I think the movie did a better job than most of capturing some of the feelings that the book did.

in my opinion theres no way it did the book justice I thought that the acting really was'nt that great it was like watching paint dry. I don't get why it won all the oscars that it did I fell in love with the book the first time I read and i was very moved by the characters plights and shocked by some events in the book. I loved how minnie got her revenge it was gross but the perfect revenge. I've always been in tune with how others have had to overcome any type of racism and its something that I'm really passionate about I despise racists especially hilly. for me the characters were alot more vibrant in the book and I liked that they viewed the plot from different characters point of view one thing I think is important is to view the situation from every view point. and I really did'nt see what all the fuss in hollywood was about I saw nothing special about the film I had high expectations but I was sorely disappointed.

Loved the book and the movie!

I enjoyed both the book and the movie.....I had read book first..so don't know if that affected how I looked at movie...but thought it kept to book pretty good

I really liked the movie I thought they did a pretty good job of keeping the movie true to the book. I loved the part about the pie harder than when I read the book, but as always the book was better.

I am glad that I watched the movie first, other wise I do not think I would have finished it because of the differences. (I'm weird like that.. lol). The book is so much better (like most cases). But I do think the main points were shown in the movie regardless. Overall, a MUST read. The movie left out so many important details and events, but all in all, is good entertainment.

The movie was awesome, like the book, the actors did an excellent personation, I love the movie and the book

Overall, I enjoyed the movie more than the book. Parts of the book were left out, but it was well done.
The book was just okay for me. I loved the characters though.

YES! I loved the book and thought the movie did a great job of fleshing out the characters and giving them faces and vibrant personalities. ADORE the movie!

I am so glad that i read the book before I saw the movie. The movie was good and it was good to see the characters come to life, but they left out soo much which is what usually the problem with books that they make into movies. Even though i did enjoy the movie i love the book more :)

I read this book purely because it was recommended by author karin slaughter a long while ago and i always meant to get round to reading it. I read it recently and Loved it! I was quite emotional when reading parts, which doesn't usually happen to me, but i love it when a book can really make you stop and think which is exactly what this book did for me. Did the film version compare to the book? Well, no, but that doesn't mean to say the film was bad, because it wasn't. The charcters didn't live up to the book but i think you have to expect that when a book can so easily portray the charcters and there personalities so well. I think it's always more difficult for that to be done in a film. Overall I enjoyed the film and i loved the important message from the story in general but for me the book was better. As are the majority of book to film adaptions!

I agree with Becky. The movie was a let down after reading the book. I felt that all of the key relationships were not developed leaving me not caring about the characters much where as the book had me concerned for all involved. They could have at least taken one of the key relationships and focused on it, instead of glossing over all of them.

I enjoyed them both but of course the book was way better then the movie. After reading the book the movie was a let down. Some of the things I felt that really touched me in the book like parts with Alibeen and teh child she was taking care of that i can't even think of her name. I also felt as if the movie was around Skeeter and the book more around Alibean meaning that I read the book and saw the movie there is good side and a bad side to that.

I really enjoyed the book and for the most part i also enjoyed the movie. The one point of the movie that I did not like was the ending, I was disappointed that they were not comfortable? to have the same ending and reason as to why Constantine was fired.

For the most part, the movie did the book justice, as far as a movie can. I'm glad I read the book first.

I really enjoyed the book and the movie. The movie did do it justice but clearly it cannot top the book.

I thought the book was OK not great. I thought the movie was pathetic.

I definitely cried through the whole movie lol
