You are 100% NOT alone. She is way too wordy - so much so I can tell she got her start writing fan fiction. What is the deal with people being so in love with all these overly wordy writers who use the same descriptors over and over?? Sometimes I lose my faith :(

I read 5 of TMI. 1 and 4 weren't too bad, but 5 did me in. My friend pinpointed what bothered me - she mentions lip biting/tasting blood, hearts pounding, and smooth abs WAY too much. And it seems like every chapter she picks one word and plugs it into a thesaurus and replaces it with some obscenely long rare word that no one has ever heard of.

Like I said before, the world she created - incredible, but her writing ruined it. :(

YES! Where is the thesaurus people! Geez all I took was one creative writing class but wasn't that one of the major teaching points - not to keep using the same descriptors over and over?? Stephanie Meyer does that as well.

message 4054: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie | 1212 comments I finished listening to The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (A Flavia de Luce Mystery, #1) by Alan Bradley and also finished reading Swimming at Night by Lucy Clarke The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1) by Alexandra Bracken The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail by Richard Peck -all 3.5 or 4 star reads. Now I'm reading NOS4A2 by Joe Hill Blue Plate Special An Autobiography of My Appetites by Kate Christensen and listening to Bloody Jack Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy (Bloody Jack, #1) by L.A. Meyer on audio CD!

message 4055: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments Yay for Bloody Jack!

message 4056: by Gary (new)

Gary Mojica | 32 comments Now I have to agree with you lot about her writing, it surely wasn't the best and I felt it was a bit cartoonish. You know the feeling that when you read a book and you could somehow imagine the characters being real? With Clare's writing I have a hard time doing that. An I agree with the wordy stuff as well. Like what my lit prof said before, keep your writing simple. Write to inspire not to impress. But since I already got a copy of CoLS in advance before I even have the 3rd and the 4th, I think I'll just read the remaining oF the series.

message 4057: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments I like that - write to inspire not to impress - I wish more authors would follow that principle.

message 4058: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 823 comments I have recently happened up Jen Lancaster and she is hilarious. I have been listening to her books on audio and the narrator is great as well. If you are in the mood for humor Such a Pretty Fat One Narcissist's Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer by Jen Lancaster Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster and If You Were Here by Jen Lancaster are fabulous!

I didn't dislike TMI, exactly, but I thought it was just okay. The books were a decent way to pass the time, but they didn't inspire me to read anything else of hers.

message 4060: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) After hearing all the mixed reviews about The 5th Wave, I decided I'd read The Monstrumologist first.
I started reading right before I went to sleep.
Bad idea.

This book is pretty damn scary! and grotesque! The only reason I'm still reading is because it's so literary and profound. I didn't know you could feel repulsed with a book and totally hooked at the same time!

Oh my gosh I don't think I could handle this book as an audiobook. Right now I'm skimming the gore but if it were an audiobook I'd have to listen to every blood-curdling scream and crunch and squelch...shudders.

Steph is: Pageturning578 (stephw1991) I feel like its been forever since I've had a conversation with you guys! I miss reading a book a week but unfortunately Summer is the only time I can work.

I am finally finishing And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Today and I must admit I've rather disappointed with this book...My least favorite of his three books...

I will hopefully start Hunger (Gone, #2) by Michael Grant Today as well!

Its not that its a bad book, You just have to dedicate time to reading it and understanding the connections while reading each persons individual story. I must say now that I have spent to afternoon reading it I have enjoyed the last few chapters a lot more! Its like reading a gigantic family tree!

Due to a stupid migraine, I've been stuck in bed with a cool washcloth covering my eyes most of the afternoon. But on the bright side, I'm listening to the new audio I got Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey . I'm currently on Casting Off (Wool, #3) by Hugh Howey . I jump on my Nook every so often, but it's still hurting my head to read, so back to the dark! And my audio!

I didn't love Inferno. I don't know if it's just the fact that I've been reading mostly YA lately or if it's because it just wasn't that good. I mean, I liked it, but I wasn't as invested as I was when I read Angels & Demons!

OMG, don't even get me started on the Grab Your Pole series! I absolutely LOVE the series! They're very realistic, and there's sex, drinking, and swearing, so it's not for everyone, but I love them. Especially Shark Bait. That book had me cracking up so much that my kids thought I was crazy. Since you didn't have the second book listed, it's Shark Bait, The Other Fish in the Sea, and then Shark Out of Water.

Zoe Cannon (zoecannon) It's not YA, but I'm reading The Darkest Gate (Descent, #2) by S.M. Reine right now, and loving it. I read the first book in the series a few months ago, but for some reason it took me until now to read book 2. Books like this remind me why I love urban fantasy.
