I finished Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes, #1) by Sara Raasch and I mostly enjoyed it! I didn't take it very seriously, it felt more like "light" fantasy to me, and I prefer epic...but it was an entertaining read! Never really connected to the MC. I did like Sir and Theron, they were interesting characters.

Next I'm reading The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #3) by Michelle Hodkin

Snow like ashes, am on the fence about it.
People rave about it, some people compare it to game of thrones. Which I dont like.. would you recomend it? I love graceling, girl of fire and throns, and throne of glass.

I haven't read Game of Thrones, so I don't know if it compares. Its not as good as the others you mentioned, but its an enjoyable quick read. I think people who aren't normally big fantasy fans would like this one, because it doesn't get bogged down in all the details, and that's what bothers most people who don't like fantasy.

Ok. Might try it out then. Yes, I think as well somtimes high fantasy can be too rich with world building.

I finished The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness and thought it was pretty good, overall. Definitely very creative with complex and likeable characters.

Now I'm reading Winter (The Lunar Chronicles, #4) by Marissa Meyer , 40% through. This book is way longer than it needs to be, but I'm mostly enjoying it :)

I'm listening to Winter and am about at the same point, David! I agree that it's longer than necessary, but I'm still enjoying it!

I'm also working my way through Go Set a Watchman. If it wasn't such a short book, I think I may have already DNF'd it.

LOL, really, Karen? Cool! Yeah, the plot is good although I have been thinking it has all been going way too smoothly so far. I'm hoping things get a little harder for them in the second half! (yes, that's a cruel way to think, but I want to see them overcome some challenges!)

I'm not planning to read GSaW, especially after hearing your comments.

How far did you get David? Yeah, it didn't really "hook" me, and the big reveal I was able to predict...but there was enough action and stuff going on that I was never bored!

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street (The Penderwicks, #2) by Jeanne Birdsall

It was a really sweet book! Not quite as good as the first book for me, but it was still a fun read.

I'm also almost done with:

Nightmares! (Nightmares!, #1) by Jason Segel

It's been taking me ages, but I've been getting through the second half of it much faster than the first half. And over all I've been enjoying it!

Today I also started:

Dumplin' (Dumplin', #1) by Julie Murphy

I've only read like 40 pages of it, but I'm liking it so far.

Hmm I got to where she made it to the place that her love interest lives and started her "training". I've read a lot of high fantasy so I have pretty high standards for it these days and the whole world felt so contrived. I wasn't a huge fan of the main character either, so that didn't help. And the writing didn't inspire me either LOL I know others have enjoyed it, but this one really wasn't for me :(

Yes, I am replying to my own comment LOL I said I was hoping things would get harder for them in the second half, and thankfully it got WAY harder pretty much right after I asked for it! Yay Marissa Meyer for making some really good choices plot wise :) I'm now enjoying the read a lot more now that the focus is (view spoiler)

I finished Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee . 1-2 stars for the 1st part, 2-3 stars for the middle, and 4 for the end. I give it a generous 3 stars overall. There were a couple of scenes that I have no clue what was being said. Blech.

I also read Voyage (Powerless Nation, #2) by Ellisa Barr which was a good read and now reading the last book of the trilogy Sabotage (Powerless Nation #3) by Ellisa Barr . This is the last book which will let me hit my GRs goal of 150 books in 2015! :)

I agree completely with the world building, I felt that really lacking in the first half. The second half was much better. But I get completely why you gave up LOL! (view spoiler) Like I said, nothing I'd jump up and down over, but it entertained me enough. It was a quick read. I'll probably try the sequel, I've heard that that one is better.

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Even though I was already reading two other books ... today I received another book as a late Christmas present––and then since I hadn't brought a book with me, I read most of it on a long car ride home and then finished it. :D It was a short book (only about 160 pages).

The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

It was pretty cool! I don't read a ton of epic fantasy, but I thought this one had some interesting and original ideas. And I liked the main character. A fun read, over all. :)
