Lauren Stoolfire | 2047 comments Just finished To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han - it was ok, but not really my cup of tea. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm reading The Spirit Chaser by K.M. Montemayor which is awesome so far - it'd be great for fans of The Conjuring, Supernatural, and Ghost Hunters.

I'm also just about to dive into Rook by Sharon Cameron !

So I've started Life and Death Twilight Reimagined by Stephenie Meyer and I'm about 50 pages in. So far its EXACTLY the same as Twilight, almost word for word, except all the names and genders have changed. Which just confuses me. I'm going to try to stick with it, mostly because of curiosity, but I'm feeling like DNF right now. Unless something dramatic changes, I'm kind of feeling like this was a big rip off by the author.

I also started a biography Virginia Woolf by Nigel Nicolson which is really good so far. I know almost nothing about this writer, and I haven't read any of her books, but I want to, and I do like to know more about the writer when reading :)

Had a feeling this wasn't going to be good. I don't know why she doesn't write anything new. I read The Host first and I liked it, is she just being lazy? Trying to milk Twilight for whatever she can? It's too bad.

I heard her reason was because she was sick of people calling Bella a damsel.

I don't really care what her reasons were, the result was awful!

I actually did like Edythe the vampire better than Edward the vampire, but I did not buy Beau as the MC for a second. It was still Bella's voice, with a few masculine pronouns and such. And all the other characters were changed, too, which made no sense...even the teachers and the secretary of the school! I was so gosh darn confused!

This could have been okay if she'd just changed it to Beau and Edythe, and then had some kind of twist in the story. I heard there is one at the end, but I just couldn't make it through that far. If you do a retelling of any story, there has to be a twist on the original to make it worth reading.

And with an unbelievable MC...it just all fell apart for me. I wanted to like it, I really did try, but it was seriously one of the worst reading experiences I've had.

I'm really hoping it doesn't ruin my love for Twilight. Right now I have no desire to ever read one of the books again or see one of the movies. :( Hopefully, that will go away in time.

But she was a damsel! She wrote her that way. Always needing to be saved. Except of course in the last book when she used my least favorite cliche (view spoiler) If you write a character who always needs to be saved at least own it!

Teresa Storm wrote: "Nancy wrote: "Jenny wrote: "I had to DNF Life and Death Twilight Reimagined by Stephenie Meyer UGH I tried, but this was just AWFUL. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show......"

That's the worst reason ever IMO. Not all characters are meant to be Katniss or Caelena. And if they were, we as readers would get bored of that. Remember in the 2nd Twilight book, it was Bella who risked her neck to save Edward. I really like Bella's character. I felt like she was relatable because of her shy awkwardness. I think there are a lot more teenagers in the world like her than Katniss.

message 15682: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments Very true Teresa. I think she should embrace Bella instead of trying to change her or make her into something different. As a writer it is impossible to please everyone so she could instead focus on the people like you who really appreciated Bella the way she was written :)

message 15683: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Yeah ... I understand how it could be frustrating, as an author, to constantly hear criticisms about your main character. And generally, people seem to be more quick to judge and tear apart female characters. As you were saying, Teresa, there are many shy/awkward women out there and not every female character can be badass or it wouldn't be realistic. In fact, I feel like a lot of authors go the wrong way with "badass" female characters by just giving them a weapon and having them kill a lot of people, and then not giving them any personality or believable flaws.

For me, it doesn't really matter so much how ~strong~ a female character is but how interesting she is––whether she's complicated, whether I feel any sort of emotional connection to her. And in the case of Life and Death, I don't think just swapping the gender of the main character really tackles the problem. I think the better approach would be to move on from Twilight entirely and to write a story about a female character who's a bit more interesting/complicated.

Although I've had very little reading time lately because of the many responsibilities of fatherhood, I snuck in a couple of hours after feeding Beau late last night between 2am and 5am LOL! I'm still going with this series The Phantom of the Earth which has completely grown on me. I am beginning to consider it an EPIC SciFi dystopian saga and am more and more impressed with the worldbuilding and twisting plotlines. The first book takes a little bit to get used to, but it gets better and better with each book :)

I had very little reading time when my kids were little. I did have some time when I just had the first kid, but my reading definitely slowed down!

Reading and talking to babies is very important. I always talked to mine when we went shopping and running errands, even when they were newborns. People looked at me like I was crazy!
