It was okay. I'm not a huge contemporary fan, though, so that probably didn't help! lol But after reading Unravel Me, I needed to read something completely different, so I wouldn't be comparing them, you know?

AHHH, that is often how it is in series...the first one is the best. Not true with yours however. Hurray!
But with the zombie one I was reading Dead Hunger II The Gem Cardoza Chronicle by Eric A. Shelman . The first one, Dead Hunger The Flex Sheridan Chronicle by Eric A. Shelman was pretty good and the second, being written by the woman I thought I would like even more but it just didn't keep me. I may go back to it. Or not. Sorry, I can't even really put my finger on what it was that made me abandon ship.

I can think of another series where the 2nd book was really good..The Hunger Games series! Catching Fire was my favorite book of the three!
But I'm glad to hear that about David's series, you are tempting me to read the rest of his books NOW! lol

Wow, you might be the first person ever to read The Host first and the Twilight series second. I loved them all and was an obsessed fan a few years ago, reading them over and over and loaning, giving to every one else. Now I am more a fan of Katniss who is more of a protagonist, she is a strong active female. If you haven't read the Hunger Games be sure to do that when you finish Twilight.

Yes, do love the Hunger Games series, all three of them! And Twilight a few years ago. But with the indie writers for my Kindle I find it unusual that I my attention is kept throughout several continuations. I have loved all of Hugh Howey's Wool series but the first one was the best. I will still read the new ones for Wool and there is a new one out now. If you haven't read all of David's Dweller series, do it, do it, do it!

Heidi | 2372 comments Yay Bethany! You have taken over my Melina book pimping for me. hahaha Love it! David I would offer some advise -- if you plan to read the entire series I would read them back to back because I read them all when they were released (about a year apart) and spent half of books 2 & 3 trying to remember people!

message 1481: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Finished: Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer (3 stars) It was definitely original, and Cinder was a good protagonist, and I liked how the plot focused more on the political upheaval than romance.

Lol to you both, Heidi and and Bethany! I am quite enjoying it now that I'm into the story. Although I would argue that Melina took somewhat too long to get the story going with unnecessary amounts of backstory at the beginning, I must say that now that we are in full swing, I'm absolutely blown away which should make you both happy! I will definitely be reading the sequels so thanks for the advice, I'll do my best to read them soon!!!

Thanks to you both for the recommendation!!

Lol don't get me wrong, I love backstory and I'm really enjoying the backstory in more recent chapters and how it's being presented, I just didn't like how it was done early in the book. But I think I've settled in now and everything's awesome!!

message 1487: by Bethany (last edited Feb 15, 2013 07:09AM) (new)

Bethany | 171 comments Yeah, Froi is like, an extra 200 pages ;) But the thing that I love so much about Melina Marchetta and her 'back stories' is that she doesn't really do 'filler' writing, ya know. The back stories are all important. She really uses every bit that she writes to weave the story together. And her story telling just blows my mind. She's incredible.

Okay...I'll stop gushing now...

Don't ever get Heidi and I in a room together, btw...

hahaha! Melina lovers unite! I seriously think she is a Goddess and agree that even if you think she is just writing filler stuff SHE isn't! Everything comes back around. I just remember reading Jellicoe Road and having that moment where everything came together - it was kind of euphoric (I know I am silly!)

Bethany | 171 comments Katelyn wrote: "Right now I am reading Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia-Pretty good so far!"

I really enjoyed the book. But this for me was a prime example of 'filler' writing. This book was huge and SO MUCH of it was unnecessary and irrelevant. Like, a third of that book could have been taken out. So, that was annoying because it takes from the story. But I liked the concept and I love Link. I hope he is represented well in the movie :)

I did read the second book, but I don't really like the series well enough to finish...
