Oh, yeah, I definitely have it in me to blow through books quickly. I was late to the HP party and read all 7 books in a week while having to dedicate 8 hours of each day to other nonsense(read "real life"). I've just found that when I slow down, I enjoy stories more. I don't know why it is, but since I read strictly for enjoyment, I don't fight it haha.

message 11566: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments I read a lot slower than I used to as well Tommy. Takes me about a week to get through a book now when I used to read them in one or two days. I am sure when I retire I will read more - I just can only maintain so much info in my head after working with people all day!

message 11567: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I seem to read a lot slower than I used to as well -- when I was a kid I blew through books. Then again, most of those were short books, like the Boxcar Children and Babysitters Club series, but I still remember when I tackled HP the first time I read them the fastest out of anyone in my family. Now when I reread it I take my time a lot more and just tend to soak in the cleverness of Rowling's writing, rather than being a particularly rabid reader. According to my bf I still decimate books infinitely more quickly than he can, but he's a slow reader by nature; it takes him upwards of three weeks to finish one book.

And for the last few days I've been swept up in a new story idea, consisting of much research and jotting of ideas and rough outlines when new ideas strike, and it's totally wrecked my reading. I literally don't have the urge to pick up a book and read right now. Must mean this idea's a good one!

Good writing stints make reading tougher for me as well. I try to make sure I push other things aside before reading, but I really don't do much else haha.
write, read, work, occasional TV and video games.

I hear you, Heidi! After a really long work day, (and I get some real winnners that have me wanting to pound my head on my desk), it's about all I can do to collapse and watch some mindless TV. That's when the reality shows like Survivor or American Idol come in handy. I don't get much reading in on workdays. The weekend is when I'll curl up and get through a couple of books.

No, I dident mean to be rude, just saying that it will be 5 books in the series not 4. But yes, its a great series so happy that its not a trilogy.

message 11582: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca McCray (RebPai) | 195 comments I definitely read slower than I used to. There was a time when I'd finish three a week. Now, I'm lucky if it's two or three a month. The day job isn't a normal 8 hour one, which is a struggle, then there's writing and social media, plus all those other little life things to do (i.e. taxes - ugh! Still have to do that). But I love it when I can. Almost finished with the Divergent trilogy...maybe tonight!

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments I'm reading Wait for You (Wait for You, #1) by J. Lynn & loving it! I play a lot of single player RPGs though, so oddly enough even when I'm wasting away time playing games, they usually give me the itch to write something.

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 957 comments I finished Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris (Theodosia Throckmorton, #2) by R.L. LaFevers this morning. Really, really liked it. I debated whether to continue or not after book one. So glad I did. I'll read more in the series before deciding how strongly i recommend the series, but this book was awesome.

Up next, finishing off the 13th Reality series with The Void of Mist and Thunder (The 13th Reality #4) by James Dashner :)
