Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments This is for discussion of Parts One and Two.

Part 1: Chapters 1-6
Part 2: Chapters 7-12

Andrea | 45 comments By part One and Two, do you mean chapters one and two? This is my first group read.
Thanks! Andrea

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments No problem, Andrea! That's a great question. This book is split into several different parts, and this is how it breaks down:

Part 1: Chapters 1-6
Part 2: Chapters 7-12
Part 3: Chapters 13-19
Part 4: Chapters 20-25
Part 5: Chapters 26-31
Part 6: Chapters 32-42

I'll amend my original post to include this as well.

Andrea | 45 comments This is great! Thanks, Kara! :0)

Nathan (nthnlwly) OH EM GEEE!! (yes that was a girlish scream!) This book is seriously amazing so far. I'm loving it anyway. It has my heart racing and my mind racing and... guh, I'm really loving it.

OK, some questions we can discuss for Parts One and Two:

**1. On the back of my book is a quote from another author. He says, "One of the best first sentences I've ever read...!". What did you think of the first sentence? How does it compare to other first impressions/sentences that you've read in the past?

**2. Part One ends with a major cliffhanger, when Todd finds a girl. Part Two ends with another cliffhanger, when she says her name is Viola. Who do you think Viola is? We know where she came from, but why do you think she came? Why do you think she chose this moment to speak to Todd?

**3. What do you think about Noise? Todd seems to think it is annoying. Do you think it would be fun or irritating to be able to read everyone's mind?

Feel free to discuss other things also, of course. These are just the questions that came to my mind as I was reading. :)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments 1. ...I honestly didn't notice the first sentence enough to remember it, but now that I look at it, I guess - it's a good attention-grabber. (Dogs and I don't really get along, but I do appreciate the honesty of a talking dog who tends to stick to discussing poo.)

2. I think I made it to part 5 of the book in just one sitting, so the cliffhanger moment didn't last me long - but, obviously, there are many things Todd was never told about New World...

3. We're used to the relative privacy of our own thoughts and reflections, and are thus inclined to see the noise as dreadful, imposing, annoying. But if it's all you've ever known, wouldn't you accept it as the natural state of being? How would you consider someone whose thoughts you could not hear? Would you think they had any thoughts at all? (And can the question be attached to social media / social media users? Did you ever bake those cookies or go on that trip abroad if no one can see pictures of it on instagram or read the "Ooh, abroad is abroad!"-status updates? Does it even count that you had an insightful comment to a news event if you didn't immediately tweet it?)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Very interesting, Karina. Of course, I'd say yes it still counts, you still did it even if nobody knows. But there's another aspect about that, whether or not anybody believes you did it without solid proof. Pictures/tweets/etc. Intriguing...

The first sentence didn't shock me either. I had read that quote before starting and so was expecting something amazing and to tell the truth, I felt let down! haha. I did like the idea about talking dogs but other than that it wasn't that impressive.

Andrea | 45 comments Hmmm... at the start I thought the NOISE would be extremely annoying, but not sure what's worse NOISE or ABSOLUTE SILENCE. To not be able to communicate at all... WOW!!!

Nathan (nthnlwly) Very true, Andrea! It does put some perspective on noise when Todd runs into a girl who won't communicate with him at all.

Nathaly | 356 comments So far I'm loving the book.

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments 1. I didn't think anything of the first sentence until I finished the book and read this thread. Re-reading it and thinking about the plot, it is a really good sentence, what with foreshadowing in a sense.

2. I think Viola was wary in her new surroundings. A new environment and being totally freaked out makes me silent, so it makes sense that Ness did not have her talking until the end of part two. Once she read the Noise, despite all of Todd's misgivings, she obviously felt she could trust him.

3. Noise would be awful. I understand why the towns have large speakers to project sound that "distracts" but goodness, I like my peace and quiet.

On a side note, can I just say how absolutely creepy Aaron is. ugggghhh.
