Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments I've spent a couple days this week sewing clothes for my grandchildren and it got me to wondering...do you have any hobbies other than reading?

I use to sew a lot. In fact, I use to make children's clothes and sell them online and in several boutiques. When I went back to school to finish my degree I just didn't have the time to sew anymore. As a matter of fact, I didn't have time to read for pleasure when I went back to school LOL

I also LOVE to cook! I wasn't much of a baker until recently, but put me with a cookbook and the ingredients called for a new recipe, and I'm in heaven!

message 2: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I used to do cross-stitch. I used to paint. Don't do either anymore. I do take a card making class occasionally, when my BFF tells me it is time to get out of the house. I'm a good cook, but I haven't done much until recently - cooking for my girl-friend.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments I used to do counted cross stitch too! I made all of our Christmas stockings. Not to mention I have several framed pieces that I've given as gifts. I don't do that anymore and I don't know why I quit LOL

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Yeah, I have a couple of framed pics, too. ☺

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 361 comments I do some knitting and occasionally some crocheting as well. But most of my spare time is taken up with bead work. I really enjoy creating new jewelry pieces.

message 6: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I was a video game addict before getting my Kindle but haven't been playing much because I'm too busy reading and being on Goodreads.
I also love TV and movies.

I have always wanted to try bead work. I've bought some beautiful hand made bracelets for myself and my girls before and admired the time and patience that went into that.

There are a lot of good beading books out there. Maybe your library has some (mine doesn't). Either of the two big magazines (Beadwork and Bead and Button) have good patterns in them, many suitable for beginners, as well as a "Basics" page that can start you off. And of course, if there's a local bead shop, there are usually beginner classes offered. I pretty much taught myself following the diagrams in the magazines. I'd recommend starting with peyote stitch, herringbone or Ndebele stitch, or netting. I think most people start with one of those. Good luck. It's loads of fun, not to mention a time suck, perfect for listening to an audio book!

message 10: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments thanks, Sandra! I'll have to see about some books or one of the magazines the next time I'm at the book store :)

message 11: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments This really got me thinking... I get so little time to myself that any time away from work, the family and the housework is taken by the kindle and the computer... I used to write, used to love it, but haven't really gotten to it in ages. I used to crochet, but it was so easy to give it up when a good book came along. I tried quilting and sewing for a while, also cardmaking, but I suck at being visually creative. I love baking, and tend to give my baking as presents because my thighs need no more chunkiness... Every so often I enjoy playing word games and Bejeweled. Do you know, apart from catching up with friends and family, there isn't anything I will give up my free time for, apart from a book! I'm feeling the need to go sign up for a class of some kind after confessing that!

message 12: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments I think I would be in that class with you LOL

message 13: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments lol Susan! Good to know I wont be alone... though I wish I could cook! I do it because we all need to eat, but I can't say I enjoy it like baking.

I enjoy adventure games - the ones with puzzles and riddles, etc. I'm really bad at the shooter games like killing zombies because my hand/eye coordination is just terrible.

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 4022 comments Whenever I have free time and I'm not reading or here on GR, I like to crochet baby items and hair accesories. They are nice quick projects that make great gifts. For myself I scrapbook/journal. I have one for my son, that I show everyone. I also have a private one that I don't show anyone, I think of it as a journal.

message 16: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments My mother used to do bead work. She was very good at it and, even though I don't wear much jewelry, I have several necklaces. One is made of peach-colored crystal beads; beautiful.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I've always been tempted to take a flower arranging class.

message 18: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Gisela, I look at the scrapbooking stuff and wish... I know better than to get started doing that cause I would spend a honkin' fortune on all the pretty papers, pens, and baubles that go on the pages LOL

message 19: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Jenny, I use to sell my children's clothing on ebay, so I use to do a little photography and graphics and stuff like that for the auction pages. I wasn't great at it, but it didn't look bad either LOL

message 20: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Oh Lauren, I could come play videos with you then LOL I use to love Tetris and Zelda. Wait! Does that show my age? LOL

message 21: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Jenny! That's it! I would LOVE to do a photography course! I'm always stunned that I can take a simple point and shoot and stuff up a beautiful view or a funny scene. Where I live, Nature puts on some stunning displays on a regular basis, and I have some sproglets that make some cute faces every now and then, but whenever I get my camera in my hand something goes terribly wrong.... I just haven't figured out what it is. But I've always wished I could take better photos.... *scurries off to see how much photography courses would be at the local tech college*

Oooh Lauren that sounds right up my alley too!
Which games do you enjoy and where do you find them? (My hubby is going to be overjoyed to find that my Goodreads addiction is leading to other addictions, lol! Over. The. moon.)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Hey girls, good to know I'm not the only one with books andGR addiction!
I used to do a lot, movies , computer games,photography, cooking ...
but now it's mostly reading and GR :-) I do the other stuff only when I have to
Last night we were watching a movie and my husband told me in the middle of it "I know you prefer to go back to reading your book" I was really embaressed because although I was enjoying the movie (it was real good) but I was thinking the moment it finishes I should go and get my book and start reading.

Terab (fiddylover) | 54 comments I dance ballet folklorico, this is my 6th year dancing. It is a style of dancing from different regions in Mexico - similar to tap dancing - lots of footwork.

message 25: by Lina (new)

Snap Shosho! We were watching a Nicolas Cage movie last night and my husband said, "I'm impressed! I thought for sure you'd have grabbed your book the moment the visitors had left". I had to sheepishly admit that I was just waiting for him to fall asleep, lol!

No, I'm in California. It's really fun and a great work out! Our director is a teacher and the group I'm in is filled with teachers so we don't only learn the dance, we learn the history behind the dance, music, etc. I enjoy it a lot! My boys dance, too, we call my husband the backstage mom because he has to help change us for shows! LOL!!

That's really neat, Tera. I took dance lessons when I was young and LOVED it. In fact, at one point in time I wanted to move to Russia and become a ballerina :)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments I used to play the Sims on the computer, oh man I spent sooo many hours simming... until my laptop died and I haven't been able to play since. I also used to play my Playstation all the time, mostly the Final Fantasy RPGs, those were (and still are) my most favorite, but they take a long time to complete, and I really haven't played FF since Nik was born, and that was 2.5 years ago lol. I'm like 75% through FFX and I just haven't had the time. I do like to play other non-RPGs though, especially Red Dead Redemption, the cowboy one by the people who made Grand Theft Auto. I also had a lot of fun playing Heavy Rain, it's a detective noir kinda game, gotta find clues and talk to people and etc. Oh, and my Beatles Rock Band is fun, I do the singing part lol. We also used to do a lot of jigsaw puzzles before Nik but haven't since because he's so ornery and likes to get into stuff, he'd be runnin' off with our pieces, losin' 'em. Besides those, really I guess my only other hobby would be walking/hiking, which we try to do at least once a week if not more. :D

I love the Final Fantasy games! Sadly I haven't had the time to play as I would like. My husband hogs the PS!

message 37: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I've never been any good at crafts. I do like scrapbooking and some computer games. I enjoy doing word searches and crossword puzzles (yes, in ink and it's a real mess. lol) I like having game night with the family. Also love movies. I would love to paint again or take up photography.

message 38: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments I'm hopeless with crafts too, I'm just not the artsy type. I couldn't sew a stitch to save my life. I used to dance (nothing fancy, just shakin' my booty in my room with friends) a lot when I was younger but not so much anymore, though sometimes a mood will hit and I'll boogie for a couple of songs. I'd love to take some photography classes, I like taking pictures, I'd especially like to get one of those high-end ones with mega-zoom lenses and take National Geographic-type pictures when I go hiking, I think that'd be great. I also like crosswords, and used to do Sudoku every day, but then I got out of the habit and now I'm awful at it...
Lol Gisela my guy hogs the PS too, and then I gotta sit there watching him play Call of Duty or some other shoot 'em up kinda game.... *yawn :D

message 39: by Sandra J (last edited Jul 22, 2012 04:49AM) (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 361 comments Good photography is definitely an art form, so I think you could consider yourself the "artsy" type. I would think that photos of the places you go hiking would be beautiful, and I don't think you'd need a megacomplicated and expensive camera to do it (though Lord knows I have trouble with a point and shoot, so what do I know?). And I'm all for taking classes of any kind. It always shakes me out of my rut and stimulates the brain. With both Altzheimers and senile dementia in the family, I figure my brain needs all the stimulation it can get!

message 40: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

What he doesn't know, won't hurt him, lol!

Some of my favorite games are Lost Via Domus (based on the TV Lost), the Broken Sword games, Dead Reefs, Black Mirror (I have the second one on my computer all loaded and ready to be played but I haven't gotten round to it yet) and Syberia to name a few.

message 42: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments I thought I was the only person who'd ever heard of Lost:Via Domus! Lol no one else I know has ever played it lol. I like that game too :)

message 43: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) I like to play computer games but recently I have been trying to find other hobbies that I can get into. I tried scrapbooking but decided it was too much for me.

message 44: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Yeah, I got a couple things for scrapbooking, but it can get very expensive.

message 45: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) I just find that I tend to start scrapbook projects, hate the way they look and want to start all over again.

message 46: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) It can take me hours just to get one page like I want it. I'm not that good either but it's fun anyway.

Laura (lglovett) I think I have more success with the cards that I make. I guess I shouldn't give up so easily. It beats not having anything to do.
