I read in another author's webpage that once they sell the rights to a book, that the author has absolutely no input on how they do the movie or show or change the story. He compared it to selling a house. Once you sell a house, the buyers can do whatever they want to do with it.

I am actually terrified myself! I don't know that I would watch them either. I have these characters so set in my mind that I couldn't bear to have them turn out any different. I honestly don't think anyone could do Jamie justice and I am afraid that Claire would come across too harsh.
I would also much prefer a movie series over a TV series. They are such beautiful, epic stories that deserve the grandness of the big screen. I believe that cutting them up into small parts will ruin the natural rythmn the books have.

But even when a movie or show stays pretty true to the written work, it never quite lives up to the imagination of the reader. I'm having a hard time imagining these books come to life on-screen, but I'd probably tune in out of curiosity. The casting will be key. Jamie was such an amazing hero...so young yet so mature, insightful, loving and brave. They can't cast some yahoo young hottie and hope it will work...it has to be an actor who is willing to read those books and become that character.

The movie totally changed the ending of the book, thereby totally changing the message of the story. I couldn't believe it...if I were Ms. Piccoult, I'd have killed someone!
I have never understood changing the ending of a book to suit a movie. Or making so many changes the movie basically becomes loosely based on a book. I've never read George R R Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice but have seen the mini series. From those I've talked to that have read the books, they say the mini series is very cannon faithful. Fingers crossed Outlander will be the same.
I have been reading these books for a long time and there has always been talk of it going to TV or a movie. I will be glad when this comes true. If TV gets it, I hope HBO does. As for characters, the list is endless of who could play the parts.

This is a wonderfully written book with a complex set of characters that are woven in and out of different time periods. I would have wished that HBO had picked it up, but if they (the group that purchased the rights) stick with the story, as was done in "Game of Thrones" they may have a winner. If they deviate too much it could ruin the whole thing. They can't destroy the integrity of the books, nor my love for the story but it could lead to a crummy tv series.

DG confirmed it will be on Starz via her website. IMDB also has it on their website. The project looks to be in its early stages. Starz probably won't have anything until it is programmed into their schedule which may be a while yet.

I think Tina's right. This is still in the development process and I can't imagine we will see anything more definitive on this until 2014, maybe as late as 2015, but of course this is all just speculation on my part.

Starz did Spartacus and The Tudors. Those shows are pretty graphic in a lot of it's details. While it doesn't bother me, it may bother some. I wonder if this series will be done the same way?

On November 6, 2012, it was announced that the Starz cable network has signed on to develop an Outlander series with Sony Pictures TV and Ron Moore, who have been developing the project. This means that at least a pilot episode will possibly be produced in 2013.
Sometimes books into TV movies get it right. No one can beat Colin Firth as Darcy and the series included much of the dialogue from Jane Austin's book into the script. Also, don't discount Netflix in the mix. They just did HOUSE OF CARDS with Kevin Spacey and did an excellent job of moving the story from London to Washington. Let's stay positive about the series being brought to the small screen with DG's approval. And I am on board with Chris Hemmingsworth. Scotish accent should not be too hard for an Australian.
I loved the book and I think HBO could do the book justice as they did with the Game of Thrones.
Jamie needs to be somebody relatively unknown in my opinion. Same thing for Claire. Too bad Jennifer Lawrence is too young and too famous.

it is going to be on STARZ which is also a subscription channel - they are likely the only type have the budget needed to do something like this and can show outlander in its full-glory without having to worry about network standards, commericials etc

I agree, Claire was a competent, capable woman who Jamie found sexy...but not a sexpot, so to speak. Casting will be important, and hopefully the writers won't totally mess up the story/characters. I'm afraid to watch...I loved Jamie and don't want anything about him to be different than the way I've made him in my own mind! LOL

Unfortunately I don't think anyone could ever live up to the faces we've created in our minds. Although a younger Mark Lewis Jones (even though he's Welsh) and an older Jennifer Lawrence (even though she's American) would have made me very happy. *sigh*

I completely agree with you, I think Claire has always been able to show herself a respectful woman, even though they've hinted several times that she's very lovely and pretty. I just don't see her that way, she's not even a very "sexual" woman in general, only with her husband, which is normal.. I'm very torn about this tv series, I really hope they don't mess it up
I liked te time travelling, so I'M really stay true to the books.

I absolutely love this series! Outlander was my very first audiobook! <3 James Frasier FTW!
Wow, I didn't know this got picked up and am excited and apprehensive at the same time. Casting, character development, sticking to the original beloved series is SO important, case in point: True Blood. I do not like what they did to that series on HBO just to make it marketable. I truly love Outlander and will wait to see how it's treated before watching. If they ruin it (and the reviews of true fans will show if they do or not), I won't watch so I can keep my memories of Jamie and Claire true.
Please, please, please pick someone like Gerard Butler for Jamie. He needs to be ruggedly sexy and smart, and not a faker. Please pick a real scotsman for the job! For Claire, someone less commercialized than most of the acresses in Hollywood these days. Would prefer. Oth to be people who arent already famous, so we can see them as their Outlander characters, and not actors.I hope the BBC, or HBO picks up this series. They do some of the best work on tv today is seems. I'd love for these to have been made into movies, though. Still wish each book were made into a movie (or two)! They're long enough, we could get two movies out of each book! Directed by Joe Wright, or Peter Jackson. Oh, if only wishing could make it so...

I liked that in True Blood they picked a true Swede for Eric. I wasn't too fond of him at first, but that smile won me over.

I honestly thing that they need to go with complete unknowns for the main characters, and then maybe some more well-known for a minor role or two - like murtagh - someone important without being key - does that make sense?
Yes it does, but who will consent to play the minor roles.
I am excited but then again, there have been talks about a movie or TV series for this show for years and nothing has ever come of it AFAIK.
