Agreed, I hope they find a really hot "Jamie" who is a true Scot!

Abigail Sharpe I'm scared about it. I think it would make an amazing mini-series (BBC knows how to do things right!), but as a series TV show? Not sure.

Heather Gregson While I would love to see this series, I'm also so worried about it. I would hate to see "creative license" change the story.

Suzanne I have been looking forward to this for years. Yet I too have the same reticence on whether they will pick the right characters and follow the storyline. Examples of great picks for characters is "Game of Thrones"; the first season was great, now it hardly follows the books at all. Perfect examples of getting it right; "Lonesome Dove" and "Gone With the Wind." Even though there were some minor changes in the latter, it didn't detract from the movie or book. The Outlander series are my favorite books, please let them get it right!

Bonnie When you see what HBO did with A Game of Thrones, they would have been awesome with this series.

Gadreille This is the first I've heard of this. How exciting!

Kim So excited about this! Hope it actually comes to fruition this time. Also, casting speculation is going to be fun!

Claire Oh no! Can't see this working unless the BBC does it. I live in Edinburgh so it would be very exciting to see the story come to life in this wonderful city and elsewhere in Scotland, but there are too many disappointing adaptations out there (The Other Boleyn Girl, for example) to give me any confidence that my all time favourite books would not be ruined. The thought of fake Scottish accents fills me with horror! So my vote would go to Douglas Henshall for Jamie...

Janetm Karen wrote: "I think Chris Hemsworth (Thor) would be a great Jamie!!!"

I agree!

Janetm This is one I could watch on a regular basis!

message 61: by Regine (new) - added it

Regine I love this book and I can't wait to see the series. It'll be interesting on who will play Jamie and Claire.

Debi Van Zandt Shawn wrote: "I am of two minds here. I would love to get my Jamie/Claire fix weekly; though I am very weary of the liberties taken in changing the story. Example, True Blood doesn't follow the original story ..."

You said it! And I totally agree!

Arezia Joanne wrote: "Chris Hemsworth would be an excellent choice!"

I agree!
Still, I hope to see some new (and maybe Scottish) hot guy to play him!
Anyway, I don't know whether I'm happy or not to see Outlander books turned to a series... books are so well written, exhaustive and detailed I fear they would miss something...
But I'd definitely give it a try.

H.D. Cyr Heidi wrote: "Here's hoping it gets a good budget and a channel that won't require much editing for content! ;)"

I agree. To edit would be to cut out half of the fun of reading these books. Yes, the adventures of Claire and Jaime are great, but so too is the passion between them.

As for Chris Hemsworth, I also agree he would make a great Jaimie and not just because of his looks. I believe he would be able to combine Jaimie's humor, intelligence, and fierceness with ease.

Cannot wait :)

Danielle Sarah wrote: "I would have loved for HBO to pick it up or even BBC."

Exactly my first thought - Please oh please put it on HBO (I don't have BBC though if they do similar work with stories like this I'd love to see it there as well!)

Annie Claire wrote: "Oh no! Can't see this working unless the BBC does it. I live in Edinburgh so it would be very exciting to see the story come to life in this wonderful city and elsewhere in Scotland, but there are ..."

Agree that BBC would be the best to do it. I hope they aren't going to film this in the US! It needs real Scottish landscape!

(I'm in west Scotland near Dunoon).

message 67: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa I have been following this topic since the announcement that R.D.Moore,was turning outlander into a T.V.adaptation
It seems to me that,People who know the books have something to say about it.
It makes me wonder has anyone sent Diana Gabaldon a message, to see if she is reading this topic and what her input on the subject would be, Or will Diana work with R.D.More. If that is the case surely it would be set in Scotland.

message 68: by Pam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pam I kind of hope it will be BBC also. They always manage to produce quality productions. I really hope that the producers and directors have enough heart and soul to bring the story to life in its entirety and not mess it up. It would be so sad if they don't get it right.

Victoria Oh sweet, finally! I was worried they would attempt to cram it all in one movie.. I suppose this will be like Game of Thrones! Let's hope so, for the sake of quality production and acting!

Arezia Annie wrote: "Claire wrote: "Oh no! Can't see this working unless the BBC does it. I live in Edinburgh so it would be very exciting to see the story come to life in this wonderful city and elsewhere in Scotland,..."

I'm from Italy, but I came in Scotland on honeymoon, falling in love with the landscape and Scottish lifestyle, and I agree with you!
Outlander deserves real Scotland.

message 71: by Christine (new) - added it

Christine Love the idea and would definitely watch it but I hope they use Scottish and English actors for the main characters. There's nothing worse than a fake Scottish accent.

Kim Christine wrote: "Love the idea and would definitely watch it but I hope they use Scottish and English actors for the main characters. There's nothing worse than a fake Scottish accent."

Agree. A real Scottish accent is heaven. A fake one? Not so much.

Michelle Sharpe I am extremely excited about this. I hope HBO picks this up. If they can somehow put it before or after Game of Thrones or True Blood, there's no way that it would fail. And HBO probably has the best budget out of all of the channels. Could you imagine if they got Sean Bean on board? Lol. Put his face in a few promos and you have thousands of interested Game of Thrones fans tuning into the pilot.

For some reason I have always pictured Lallybroch on the west coast of Scotland with Dumbarton Rock in the background.
(born in Greenock, now in Canada)

Susan Ooh, noooooooo! I refuse to watch. I shudder to think who they'll cast as Claire and Jamie!

Tracy Akers Can't wait! Yes, Chris Hemsworth would make an amazing Jamie. (THE role they have to get right!)

message 77: by Rebecca (new) - added it

Rebecca Vance I would love to see it but it will probably be on cable, and I don't have cable or dish. If it was possible to watch in online or on Netflix that would be great. I like that option so I can watch when I want to.

message 78: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee i don't see Chris as Jamie...there is just something missing, but I can't describe what is it...I hope they pick an unknown rather than someone who has already made their name

Sean Bean is a Yorkshire man, from Sheffield. I've never heard him do a decent Scottish accent!

Claire Christine wrote: "Annie wrote: "Claire wrote: "Oh no! Can't see this working unless the BBC does it. I live in Edinburgh so it would be very exciting to see the story come to life in this wonderful city and elsewher..."

Yes, and maybe Ailsa Craig for Jamie's swim with the silkies to find the jewels?

Tracy Akers How about Charlie Hunnam as Jamie? He's pretty--and rugged.(Just throwing that out there.)

Sabrina Sondra wrote: "Joana wrote: "am I the only one that's not the tiniest bit excited? I'm really afraid they're going to "ruin" the series for me, so I don't think I'll even watch it, but I'd love some feedback :3"
..."

Agree. I would hate to see this turn into a sappy nightime soap opera.

Tracy Akers Books are always better. They're the real story.

Susan One problem with the casting is, if they do the whole series, the characters age. Although in the first book Jamie is in his 20's, and Claire is about 30, the next time we see them 20 years have passed.

message 85: by Vallsykes (last edited Sep 09, 2012 02:45AM) (new) - added it

Vallsykes This is great! I might be partial to Hemsworth, but have no nominations for who could play Claire. Besides HBO and BBC, what about A&E? Maybe. Outlander also has a bit of fantasy and sci-fi in it...there could be other networks. I sort of don't want HBO to take it on though.

Now I must get on with catching up with this series. Loved the first and second books.

Danielle I picture Claire as looking like Kate Winslet maybe, but I doubt she would be the one to do it. I know she's in her late 20s in the first book, but somehow I think she should look older. Lucy Lawless was fantastic in Spartacus and I could see her as Claire.

Or maybe Michelle Williams maybe?

Heidi Rice I hope it's HBO... Or AMC who did amazing things with Mad Men and Breaking Bad... I think that BBC are a bit strapped for cash at the moment and don't do many period drama any more.

But what scares me is it might be SyFy - doesn't this producer have a history with them? In which case it'll be no-name actors on a shoestring budget and absolutely crap.

It's so rare that a book I adore isn't butchered in the process of bringing it to television. Brother Cadfael was one of the few where the television series was very nearly as good as the books. If this is meant for US commercial TV, I'm nervous, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Nancy I've read the Outlander series a couple of times, and when the last one came out I ordered all of them from audible.com and listened to them on iTunes at work. I'm eagerly waiting for the next one to come out. I also follow Diana Gabaldon on Facebook and am looking forward to the movie being made.

Georgeann Knier Joana wrote: "am I the only one that's not the tiniest bit excited? I'm really afraid they're going to "ruin" the series for me, so I don't think I'll even watch it, but I'd love some feedback :3"

I agree. Same with Shades of Grey. My imagination is much better than anyone they would pick for Christian Grey. I think each person has the type they like and putting to air is going to be disappointing for someone!I am not going to watch it either. Jamie and Christian Grey is in my head where no one will adulterate it.

Margrit Keeler It will make a great series if they don't change any of the story line.

Vinnie I bet the people doing Game of Thrones would do an excellent job - David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

message 93: by Rebecca (new) - added it

Rebecca Vance Has anyone heard any more about this? When is it coming out?

Christy Haley This would be awesome!!..i get so drawn in and love this series!!!

Heather Gregson Sony Pictures TV bought the rights and worked a deal with the Cable station Starz. Ron Moore from Battlestar Galactica has been signed to write the screenplay.

Linda Rogde Allison wrote: "I am SOOOO EXCITED to hear this!!!! I hope it turns out well!!!"

Shawn wrote: "I am of two minds here. I would love to get my Jamie/Claire fix weekly; though I am very weary of the liberties taken in changing the story. Example, True Blood doesn't follow the original story ..."

Yes, would love to see the story on the screen but hope it's true to the wonderful books!

Marilyn Short I had the thought of a movie but a TV series would work IF they film on location, use a proper Scotsman for Jamie and an American for Claire. No messing about, location is a big deal in this and if it was to proceed further than The Outlander then consideration would need to be given ie Jamaica.
A super fantastic job was done with The Borgias and I hope just as good or even better will happen with The Outlander.
Please keep the fans posted as to what's happening.....

Heidi Rice Marilyn wrote: "Iuse a proper Scotsman for Jamie and an American for Claire. No messing about, location is a big deal in this and if..."

TBH I think just quality actors would do... Renee Zellweger isn't a proper London girl but I was totally convinced by her Bridget Jones.

But yes, we would need the Scottish highlands, as opposed to say, the Californian Rockies!

Ive always thought of Kevin McKidd as Jamie

Scottish yes, but a bit old and crusty for me... I like Chris Hemsworth (if he could do a convincing Scottish accent)- he's definitely got the slanting eyes and the big buff body.
