I'm listening to this right now and am totally into it. I find myself trying to read foreshadowing into everything, but really hoping to be surprised too.
I don't conisder this YA at all. I'm guessing it's New Adult, or whatever it's called. Both Julie and Maddie are in their early twenties. I think it's a decent concept and the prose is okay, but I don't get all the buzz. Yeah, it's a side of WW2 fiction we don't see, but I had a hard time buying into the girl's friendship and found neither character likeable. I don't even see myself recommending it to teens unless the spefically ask for WW2 fiction.
Sounds like a good one for discussion to me. I really enjoyed it...if it was published teen I say we put it on the final list and argue about whether it should be teen at all, or Printz worthy.
I hate to say it, but I couldn't finish this book. It has so many great reviews and has been getting so much buzz that maybe my expectations were too high. I just felt the story was a bit slow paced and the narration was kind of confusing - the whole first-person shifting into third person didn't work here for me. I got about halfway through before I realized it was taking me a long time to read for a reason - I just wasn't compelled enough to pick it up and keep reading. I agree with Danielle that I don't see myself recommending it to teens.
