Hi, I'm Melissa. I live in America and like to read. I created this group because I thought it would be fun to read my way across Canada. Anything else y'all want to know, feel free to ask.
I accept most friend requests.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 27 comments Hi, I'm Jenny. I'm obsessed with regional list-making reading challenges.

message 3: by Janice (last edited Jul 14, 2012 11:00AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) And I'm Janice. I'm Canadian and have lived all my life in the best province - Alberta. :) While I have read lots of Canadian books, I've never intentially read the books based on which province or territory they are set in. I intend to do all 10 provinces and 3 territories in this challenge.

message 4: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) It's nice to see familiar people already joining the group. :)

Yes, it is nice to see familiar people. I recognize a couple of you from other groups.

message 6: by Susan (new)

Susan | 30 comments These around-the-? literature groups are addictive.

I was born in Canada - Alberta - but have not returned since ... 1960? or so. I have visited other areas of Canada (BC, Ontario) and really enjoyed the area. Other than some Margaret Atwood I have not read any Canadian Literature.

Hi Susan,
I find myself addicted to the "around-the-?" groups, too. I like getting read about different parts of the world that I might not normally get to hear about or see.

Where in Alberta were you born? And welcome to the group.

message 9: by Susan (last edited Jul 14, 2012 12:07PM) (new)

Susan | 30 comments I was born in Calgary, back when it was a much smaller place ... about 240,000 people.

message 10: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) You wouldn't even recognize it now. LOL! Populaion now is over 1 million. I love Calgary. I lived there for about 4 years.

message 11: by Sue (new)

Sue Hi! I'm Sue and I live in England. Currently reading round the USA, UK and the world. Hope to finish one of these this year and thought I would go round Canada and/or Australia next year so this group is ideal. Have read very little Canadian literature so looking forward to it.

You're very welcome.

message 15: by GateGypsy (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments Hello! I'm joining late, but I am a big fan of Canadian authors and I'm looking forward to finding books applicable to every province and territory. I happen to have one about the Yukon sitting on my kitchen table right now, so I might jump right into it when I'm done the book I'm currently reading. This will be fun! Thanks for the invite, Janice!

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 425 comments Mod
Welcome to the group, GateGypsy.

message 17: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) You're not late, GateGypsy. The challenge doesn't start until Jan 1/2013. You'll have lots of time to explore options in readiness.

What is the book you have sitting on your table?

message 18: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) That's just like teasing a kid with candy, isn't it Chelsea? LOL!

message 19: by GateGypsy (last edited Jul 22, 2012 09:01PM) (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments Frontier Spirit by Jennifer Duncan. It came home with me just the other day. It's not fiction, but it fits the bill!

I'm glad I'm not late. I was worried I'd have to find and fit in 13 books by the end of the year, and I wasn't sure if I could swing that LOL I guess I was really tired when I clicked to join the group, 'cause it says right in the title that it's 2013! Working night shifts sure does mess with my head.

message 20: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I love the cover of FRONTIER SPIRIT by Jennifer Duncan and sometimes that's all it takes to make me pick up a book to read it. LOL!

Don't worry - I make enough mistakes and constantly am being corrected.

Hey, if it fits the bill and it catches your interest, why not use it? :)
I make lots of mistakes too- Janice and Jenny corrected one of mine.

message 22: by Autumn (new)

Autumn Hi all, Autumn here from New Brunswick. I love reading stories where "place" is a major character (know what I mean??), glad to see this group started.

What is the plan for January? Will we just be making individual choices and going from there? Also thanks to GateGypsy for the suggestion- I love books set in the Far North.

message 23: by Melissa, Chief Bookworm (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 425 comments Mod
Hi Autumn, and welcome to the group.
Yes, we'll be making individual choices and going from there. I wanted some flexibility in regards to choices, so there aren't a lot of rules here. There might be some group reads later on, if enough people are interested.

message 24: by GateGypsy (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments Hi, Autumn! Glad to have you join the group! I'm looking forward to seeing your selections. (And if you have any NB suggestions for us, I look forward to seeing those, too!)

You're welcome, Robin. What part of Ontario are you from? I'm a little familiar with it; one of my Goodreads friends is from Hamilton, and I visited Niagra Falls on the Canadian side maybe 10, 12 years ago.

message 33: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde Hi, I'm Catherine and I'm located in Melbourne Australia. My husband is Canadian - he was born and grew up in London Ontario. We are going to visit next year. I'm excited to be part of this group! Has anyone watched the Canadian sitcom Corner Gas?

Hi Catherine! It's nice to have you here. I don't watch much television, but most of what's available in the U.S. seems to be American; I think the only two the exceptions are Law and Order: UK and BBC news.

Welcome Catherine. Corner Gas is hilarious. Unfortunately it's been cancelled and is only available in reruns.

GateGypsy | 126 comments Yrinsyde wrote: "Has anyone watched the Canadian sitcom Corner Gas?"

Yup, it's one of my hubby's favourite shows. Maybe because he grew up in Saskatchewan? He owns a couple seasons on DVD ;-)

Welcome, BTW! Good to have you here.

message 37: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'm waving goodbye for a short while - headed north to Alaska (literally) on a Disney Cruise. I'll be back August 8th.

message 38: by Melissa, Chief Bookworm (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 425 comments Mod
Have fun, Janice.

message 39: by GateGypsy (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments An Alaskan Disney cruise? What city does it depart from? Take lots of pictures! I'm super curious!

message 40: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) GateGypsy wrote: "An Alaskan Disney cruise? What city does it depart from? Take lots of pictures! I'm super curious!"

It departed from Seattle. We stopped at Skagway, Juneau, Ketchican and Victoria BC. I suspect the last stop was a requirement in order to have a duty free shop. It certainly wasn't a long enough stop. I think it was a matter of 4 hours in the evening.

message 41: by GateGypsy (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments Sounds like it was lovely, if short. I think we'd enjoy a cruise like that -- and it's easy to get to Seattle. Florida is a little further away ;-)

message 42: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Next year, the Disney cruise to Alaska departs from Vancouver, BC.

message 43: by GateGypsy (new)

GateGypsy | 126 comments Who would I contact to find out more?

message 44: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) You can go online to Disney Cruise Lines. http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/

The ship that is doing that run is the Disney Wonder.

Butterflycager Hi, I'm Jules, and I stumbled across this group in a post in the GR Feedback group. I live in the United States, and I have never had the opportunity to visit Canada, but I hope to someday. My very favorite author happens to be Canadian, though - Charles de Lint.
