Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 192 comments US Army Professional Reading list. I have had this around for a few years. It looks to be the most up to date version.
I usually avoid 'official lists" but this looks interesting. I am not even close to the right person for anyone seeking to take this on as an on going group read. WWII is in here but so is a lot of not WW II titles.

If there are others who think it worth selecting from, it is a resource, or if a discussion starts around it, please remember my name.

If this is better in the resource discussion, I will take action and delete it from here.

I just got back from my usual bicycle ride past our minor league baseball stadium and the Salt lick BBQ, which is in front of the ball park.

A chopper was flying unusually low, then it landed in the parking lot. I stopped to watch and another fellow got out of his car and also watched, taking a few pics.

not something you see everyday, he said.

after a few minutes a girl came out of the Salt Lick w/a big to go bag. put it in the chopper and it took off !

Rona Simmons (ronasimmons) | 84 comments Does anyone have a suggestion for a book on touring battlefields -- I am hoping to gather a top ten list for a potential article. And I'd love to hear what anyone believes it the value of touring battlefields and what they learned (does not have to be WWII).
Thanks for the help.

Rona Simmons (ronasimmons) | 84 comments I have another request if anyone is willing to take a few minutes. A witness to D-Day, James Neyland, one of the WWII veterans profiled in my book (The Other Veterans of World War II: Stories Behind the Front Lines) is 97 years old, homebound, and under hospice care.

On D-Day, I want to present him with a card with hopefully 75 photos of people holding a copy of the book as he is on the cover and has enjoyed thinking of himself as the "cover boy." But, lacking a copy of the book, anyone can print a copy of the cover hold it up, snap a photo of you holding the paper and send the photo to me

You can find the book cover copy in the book shelf section of this group, or visit: ronasimmons.com and scroll down to see an image of the book.

Thank you anyone and email me the photo at rona_simmons@bellsouth.net, please include your name and city-state-country! Make someone's day.

Liam (dimestoreliam) | 498 comments Look, I have just as much respect for Churchill as does anyone- he was quite brilliant, exceptionally courageous and also extremely witty & amusing on occasion ("Yes madam, I am drunk- but tomorrow morning I shall be sober, and you will still be ugly!")... Before anything else, though, I am an Irishman. Not only that, but someone who has been fighting against racism (and other forms of bigotry) since I was first able to speak, literally as a pre-school child. Winston Churchill was a scandalous racist and an absolutely unapologetic imperialist. That is a matter of historical record. Do I think we should therefore pull all his statues down? No, not necessarily. What would be next, burning his books? The one logically follows the other, and both are tantamount to erasing history, which all of us should deplore regardless of our political orientation. If the statue in question were in Dublin (or, more to the point, in Belfast) I would most likely have a different opinion, but that's not what we're talking about here as far as I know. The same would be true if the statue was of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, who was by all accounts a truly despicable man with none of his son's redeeming qualities. On the other hand, if it was good enough for Lord Nelson it ought to be good enough for either of the Churchills...

"Lord Nelson stood in pompous state, upon his pillar high
And down along O'Connell Street he cast a wicked eye
He thought how this barbaric race had fought the British Crown
Yet they were content to let him stay right there in Dublin town!

So remember Brave Lord Nelson, boys,
He has never known defeat
And for his reward they stuck him up
In the middle of O'Connell Street!

For many years, Lord Nelson stood, and no one seemed to care
He would squint at Dan O'Connell who was standing right down there
He thought the Irish love me or they wouldn't let me stay,
All except that band of blighters that they call the IRA!

And then in nineteen sixty-six, on March the seventh day,
A bloody great explosion made Lord Nelson rock and sway!
He crashed, and Dan O'Connell cried, in woeful misery
Now twice as many pigeons will come and shit on me!

So remember brave Lord Nelson, boys,
He has never known defeat!
And for his reward they blew him up
In the middle of O'Connell Street!"

I once had a copy of Fighter Over Finland by Eino Luukkanen - now sadly lost. He wrote that the Finnish Air Force used anything that would fly, including captured Russian aircraft. They liked the Buffalo - but when they got hold of some 109s they liked those better!

Liam (dimestoreliam) | 498 comments I hate to add to all the bad news over the last couple of days, but the brilliant, always erudite and notoriously curmudgeonly jazz critic and cultural commentator Stanley Crouch apparently died this past Wednesday. I didn't always agree with Mr. Crouch; hell, sometimes I so violently disagreed with something he wrote (or said) that I felt like throwing the book across the room or kicking a hole in the television screen. That being said, he was such an incredibly talented writer that anything he wrote was worth the time to read even when I thought he was wrong. This world will be considerably less amusing without his frequently outrageous smart-ass remarks (he was one of the funniest motherfuckers ever), but at least he left an extensive body of work for us all to enjoy...

Here is a link to his obituary on the NPR website: https://www.npr.org/2020/09/16/913619...
