This is only indirectly tied to WW II, but I'm pleased to read of Old Harry's fondest for a particular product of Kentucky for which I too have a preference -- although I can't say we share a linking for Old Crow:http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles...
Doesn't have a damned thing to do with World War II, but I have purchased Tim Clayton's Waterloo: Four Days that Changed Europe's Destiny.
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "Well it's still a very good book :)"Hi Rick. It seems to be. I am interested in the Napoleonic Wars, but I can only read about the battles, not the full campaigns. Of course, Waterloo has been written about more than any of 'em, and I have read Alessandro Barbero's book, which I loved. Clayton's book complements it nicely because it deals with the full campaign, which was rather short.
Hi Gerald, Clayton's book has been one of very few that has covered in detail the actions of the French army moving to contact against the Prussians. Overall it is a very good single volume account of the Waterloo Campaign. I think you will find it a surprisingly good read (well I hope you do).

Given that 1815 is the bicentennial of the end of the Napoleonic Wars, I thought that a read about Waterloo was in order. I encountered this one in my local secondhand bookshop this evening. Based on what I have seen thumbing through it, I expect to like the book very much.

I have just finished Clayton's book and found it very informative. Not read much of the period but thought due to anniversary I would give it a go. Well worth the read, especially and it covers movements of the French and all the allied armies over the 4 days. Also covers the aftermath with details of the casualties and how they were attended or not in time as was the case with a lot of the wounded.

I'm not a Napoleonic era buff and have read little but did enjoy
Waterloo: The True Story of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles by Bernard CornwellAlso one other I would strongly recommend is:
Britain Against Napoleon: The Organization of Victory, 1793-1815 by R.J.B. Knight
I was approached by Endeavour Press to give a review of this book:
The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte: A Biography
In other news, I have finalised and reviewed this book:
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
This has been my first 5-star rating this year: I was blown away by this book and it made quite some impact on me. I highly recommend this one.
I came across this today in The Washington Post. There is a great collection of videos of historical interest with a link to the AP video site:http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/th...
Okay, this has nothing to do with WWII. (Except maybe the location) but it was too cool not to share. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=22&am...

Love it, thanks!
While this is only indirectly related to the fighting of WW II, it is hugely important to the issues of food during the war and the nationalities issues in the USSR. I was saddened to read of the passing of Robert Conquest -- although at 98 he had a pretty good run. For those of us involved in Soviet studies in the seventies and eighties, he was a force to be reckoned with. I have high regard for his:
The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivization and the Terror-Famine
The Great Terror - Stalin's Purge of the Thirties. This is the original edition, not the reassessment mentioned in the obit below.
Stalin: Breaker of NationsHere is the NY Times obit:

Driving home from a meeting today they covered his death and career on Radio 4's six o'clock news. Interesting and well respected life and accomplishments.
I may be quiet over the weekend as I am driving down the coast to visit my Dad for a few days. I'll check in if I can and see what's happening otherwise I'll be back on Sunday afternoon.
I'm trying to use my new smart phone to keep tabs on Goodreads. The problem with 'smart' phones is that they require smart operators!
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "I'm trying to use my new smart phone to keep tabs on Goodreads. The problem with 'smart' phones is that they require smart operators!"Old Navy saying: "You have to be smarter than the equipment you operate."
Quite true Manray9! We use to say this about recruiting for the infantry when I was in the army: "I'm not real smart but I can carry heavy objects."
The thing to keep in mind is that your smart phone isn't. Well it isn't a phone at any rate, it is a hand held computer and all that implies. Good luck with that.

And we always used to say that kit needed to be squaddie proof (metal, heavy, hardwearing etc) otherwise all us military personnel would find it easy to break.
Hi guys, do any of you use the KindleUnlimited (or any other subscription schemes such as sribd) and what are your experiences in finding any good non fiction / ww2 books?
I use Kindle Unlimited. You can find some good non-fiction/WWII books. I have a few on my Kindle now. Just don't expect to find expensive ones because there will be a fee.

Then there is; "it's operator's headspace"....
Bou wrote: "Hi guys, do any of you use the KindleUnlimited (or any other subscription schemes such as sribd) and what are your experiences in finding any good non fiction / ww2 books?"I do not have the Unlimited, but I generally don't have to much of an issue with finding WWII books for my Kindle. Unless I am looking for something fairly specific, they have nada by Matthew Cooper. Blech.

Naw, it might be the organic component of the computer. Honest there is one.

Well I am just about to turn my computer off and head out the door to the airport to start my European holiday. I will be away for a month but will attempt to check in on a regular basis to make sure things are OK. I will also open the October theme read thread for folks just in case I have issues while I'm travelling. Take care and don't trash the joint while I'm away :)

A.R.,Perfect time to be in Rome. If you want a "real" Roman restaurant, try Vecchia Roma on Via Dei Funari. It's near the Jewish Quarter and the wonderful Fontana delle Tartarughe (Three Turtle Fountain), which is off the beaten path.
And don't miss the Borghese Gallery and Museum downtown, in the Piazzale (not to be confused with the similarly named one in a park to the N.E.) Get a reservation.
Have fun!
