Asia Hello Everyone,
I liked the movie and have watched both several times. Nevertheless I prefer the series because I think it portrays Mr. Darcy's initial "hatred" and final love better than in the movie. In the movie I think they were both not that similar to the real personalities of the characters in the novel. I thought that if they mixed the Elizabeths from the series and the movie, it would have been perfect. But if I had to choose for the one that I preferred as the most I would say the series. Which one do you prefer instead? Why?

LE The BBC series, definitely. I loved the casting of the secondary characters, especially Mr. and Mrs. Bennet.

Mr. Collins was thoroughly repulsive in both manner and movements (great actor), and Mr. Wickham was equally lovable and dislikeable.

Plus, Mr. Darcy in a wet white shirt – phwoar.

I want to watch it again now :)

Kristen As a sucker for a good Colin Firth movie...
Although I am glad that they are producing classic books into TV series and movies to introduce people to them. (Unless the adaptation is awful)

message 4: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy Definitely the BBC with Colin Firth! I agree with Lauren - the wet shirt Mr. Darcy is yummy. What's crazy (or actually not at all crazy) is the fact that Colin Firth's wet shirt Mr. Darcy was way more sexy than Channing Tatum's Magic Mike. Call me crazy :)

Molly Kluck Uh duh, the one with Colin Firth in it!

Suzanne Colin Firth! And Yes, Go Amy, I agree! ;-)

M. Gosh, the series of course. Colin Firth, yum!

Erik Nelson The 2005 movie was horrible, if you're looking for something faithful to the book. The BBC miniseries is by far the best version. It may even be one of the best translations of any book to film ever made.

Philip Lee You're all being rotten on the film. Period grittiness lifts it above the ordinary, and most of the acting is spot on.
Keira Knightley's Elizabeth has that typical English combination of clever, spoilt and sensible. And she's got The Mouth. I think she studied Greer Garson, who had The Bloom.
Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy isn't only remote and vulnerable (and almost young enough), he's got gravitas.
I just wish they hadn't cast Donald Sutherland, he really is too old and hammy!
Come on, you're all smitten with Colin Firth! I mean, who needs to go and jump in the lake?
PS, it's a film, FGS! You can watch it over a takeaway and a good bottle of wine.

Stéphanie i actually really liked donald sutherland, he seemed so sweet. and i agree the movie was also very good, keira knightley was the perfect actress for elisabeth in my eyes.

Charletta Carter-Brown Hey. I would have to say that I loved them both for different reasons. The 2005 movie had more sexual tension than the BBC miniseries. I own both and have watched them both numrous times and as much as I adore Colin Firth I found myself wanting to be kissed by the McFadden guy in the movie. But for a pure treatment of the book I would say the BBC miniseries with Colin Firth.

message 12: by Yue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Yue I have to say the movie. Colin Firth seems too stiff, no passion. Jane-movie was much more beautiful, the soundtrack is lovely, and Judy Dench was much more respectable and formidable than the one in the series. The way Keira and Matthew looked at each other was very romantic, unlike Colin, who was stalking Elizabeth from the window (several times).

And WOW, the proposal in the movie... Pure sexual tension and passion. I love that scene. The only character I like best in the BBC series than in the movie is Bingley.

Amanda I like the BBC miniseries better, it is more faithful to the book. I also prefer Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy than I do Matthew Macfadyen.

message 14: by Jo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jo I think the BBC series was more faithful to the book, but there were many things about the 2005 movie that I liked such as the casting and the feel of the whole thing. Of course, I would rather just read the book. If I've got a weekend I'm going to watch the BBC series and if I've got an evening I'll watch the movie.

message 15: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy Oh yes Collin Firth, please! I think it expresses the feel of that time a thousand times better than the other one.
Plus Mr Darcy in a wet white shirt? - Decided

SarahO While the BBC series gives more I prefer the movie. To me, Knightly is Elizabeth Bennet and I love the rest of the casting and the whole feel of the movie. Despite what they had to leave out for time I thought it was very true to the book.

Shreya Kashyap Oh Thank God ! Atleast Phillip is there to view this the way I want. The movie is just a 90 minute watch, so its bound to be not all book-y. The thing to be paid attention to is the movie never stepped out of its boundaries and it kept all the incidents together to the extent it could go.
But, when it comes to character portrayal, Keira was The Elizabeth. Everybody here is agreeing, and yea sure no doubt Colin Firth is undoubtedly the Darcy I love watching but nevertheless, the attitude that Matthew guy had, the intense dialogue delivery at the time he proposes (I love that bit and can't even remember how many times have I watched it) this all is quite adequate and everything about the movie just settles down in my heart !

Sabrina I have not seen the BBC series, though I am planning on seeing it soon. I know from your comments that it is apparently going to be very good, but I did enjoy the movie very much. I thought Keira was great as Elizabeth, and I enjoyed the movie. I will look forward to seeing the show, but for now I am content with the 2005 movie.

message 19: by Madeleine (new)

Madeleine I thought the 2005 movie was visually stunning and overall it was good movie. In terms of adaption of Pride and Prejudice...1995 all the way. I cannot fully express my total love for that series or for Colin Firth.

Susan The 2005 movie was pretty to look at, and there might have been a bit more authenticity in the dirt, but that's all that redeems it. If one is looking for a good adaptation of P & P, the 2005 movie isn't it. The screenwriter took all the best lines from the book, the ones people who've read the book expected to hear, and built a storyline around them, and gave some of the best lines to Lizzie, even if she didn't have them in the book.

The 1995 version is definitely truer to the book, and Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle did a marvelous job as Darcy and Elizabeth.

message 22: by Finn (last edited Jul 13, 2012 07:12PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Finn Series with Colin Firth is the best screen version!! Both Elizabeth and Darcy were portrayed exactly as I envisioned. I just loved the way Elizabeth would smile her knowing smiles and the way Darcy acted - facial expressions, posture, everything! - when he was around Elizabeth:)

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely the BBC series! I grew up watching it because my sisters (and I) adore it, and so any other version is nimpossible to watch.

Inês the serie... because its more complete than the movie and has more details in it :)

Peggy Johnson Hands down Colin Firth!!! WAY better!!

Ivelina both are great but i really prefer the one from 2005.

message 27: by Aerykah (last edited Jul 14, 2012 07:28AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aerykah The 1995 mini series is the best! I love the cast! They were great. :) I also like how close it is to the book. Now, when I read the book over again, I can almost hear the movies playing in my head. :D

I watched the 2005 version one time because my friend asked me to watch it with her & I really wanted to see it. The only word I can use to describe that experience is "painful". I didn't like most of the cast & felt like they didn't play their parts very well.

Though I do love Firth's Darcy, that obviously isn't the only reason I prefer the series. And a wet shirt isn't going to make me choose one movie over another... In fact, I actually thought McFadyen was pretty good as Darcy --- I didn' expect to like him as much as I did. He's not quite as good as Firth, but still pretty good. ;)

Margaret H. Definitely the BBC series-one of the best ever made. Brideshead Revisited is another great one. Firth cannot be equaled as Darcy and I've seen a lot of Darcies (Even Olivier can't compare) All of the casting and acting are perfect-the Bennett sisters and parents, Mr.Collins, Bingley, his pompous sister etc

Astra Erik wrote: "The 2005 movie was horrible, if you're looking for something faithful to the book. The BBC miniseries is by far the best version. It may even be one of the best translations of any book to film eve..."

Agreed!

Jackie G Some books just can't be done justice without the time that a miniseries allows -- loved the BBC miniseries (and wish someone would consider doing Harry Potter in that format!).

Lesley I think the series wins hands down not just due to Colin Firth (yum). Whenever I read this book now I hear the actors from the series in my head, they fit perfectly

Goddess Of Blah agree- the BBC series wins hands down. Why did they bother producing that silly film with a cast that could never beat dear Colin Firth!

Nancy Colin Firth. . . .no question about it!

message 34: by Anna (new)

Anna Griffith I would certainly have to agree with most posters here; the BBC one is certainly better. I'm not a fan of Kiera Knightley, and because the BBC series is so much longer, they were able to get into the character development more, which is the best part about the book. And of course Colin Firth is yummy.

Astoria Both. One is a series and the other a movie. I enjoyed both very much.

message 36: by A. (new) - rated it 5 stars

A. BBC is sooo much better. Keira Knightley did a very poor job playing Elizabeth. She acted more like what I would think Kitty or Lydia would be like. Plus, Colin Firth was a much better Mr. Darcy.

Margayle65 The series will always be my favorite, and I think I've seen every version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE made. Colin Firth is just such a wonderful Mr Darcy, and Jennifer Ehle perfectly portrays Lizzie Bennett's sharp wit and tongue.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy. End of story. Besides, you actually pull out the book and read along with the dialog in the BBC series. Truly, I did this while getting quotes for a term paper.

Leti Del Mar
The Inadvertent Thief

message 39: by Anki (new) - added it

Anki While I enjoyed the 2005 film and the 1995 BBC series, my favourite rendition of Pride & Prejudice is the BBC mini-series from 1980, with David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy. The film quality does show its age, unfortunately, but I still love it to pieces.

message 40: by Nora (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nora Roy You must be joking. Colin Firth is and always shall be THE Mr. Darcy.

message 41: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara I love both sooooo much, I can't choose. I love both Colin Firth and Matthew MacFayden as Mr. Darcy, and I love the cast in the 2005 better. Except . . . I really, really don't like Keira Knightley as Elizabeth. If only she wasn't in it . . .

message 42: by CB (new) - rated it 4 stars

CB Its the BBC series - not just for the Colin Firth- gratuitous lake scene (although who wouldn't enjoy that!!) but because Jennifer Ehle portrays the feel of Elizabeth in a much truer way. Elizabeth Bennett has character, intelligence and knows it is these reasons that make her her father's favourite - not some waif like Knightley pouting her way through most of the scenes. Also the supporting actors in the BBC series are much truer - Alison Steadman is perfect as hysterical Mrs Bennett and Julia Sawalha is brilliantly stupid as Lydia swept off her feet by the gorgeous but deadly Adrian Lukis.

Its the BBC all the way i'm afraid.

Jessica What a question...I love both these movies so much that I don't know if I can choose. I believe both bring something to the table. But...if I had to choose...I guess I would go with....the BBC series. It is longer and therefore shows more of the book. Plus, Colin Firth is the perfect Mr. Darcy.

message 44: by Marz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Marz BBC series. Stayed true to the book. :)

Katie I liked the film way better than the bbc series. I think Elizabeth in the movie is way more likable and charming. Also the film was just beautifully directed. I think it really combined the classic characters and story line in the novel Pride and Prejudice but also modernized the characters a bit to be more relatable to our times while still holding its place as a period piece.

message 46: by Margaret (last edited Jul 17, 2012 02:05AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Margaret Sharp I preferred the BBC series, but parts of the film were extremely well handled.

Cynthia Catts Matthew who?! Colin Firth, all the way!

message 48: by Katrina (last edited Jul 17, 2012 07:52AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Katrina Passick Lumsden As a whole, I'd say I prefer the series. I thought Colin Firth did an excellent job as Darcy, and I much preferred Jennifer Ehle over Keira Knightly. But I did enjoy Matthew MacFadyen's Darcy. He wasn't as true to the book character, but he was adorable in an abused puppy kind of way.

message 49: by Caz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Caz Colin Firth, definitely. I like Matthew MacFadyen as an actor, but he's not Darcy material, IMO. Also, I can't stand Keira Knigtley - her manner of speech is so artificial it drives me bonkers! So that made the movie version hard to watch.

message 50: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Matthew MacFayden, I think, did a good job portraying Darcy's extremely quiet side, but that's like the ONLY side of Darcy he ever showed. You can see the gradual changes in Mr. Darcy with Colin Firth's portrayal.
