I have to admit I do like both. That being said, I was truly taken with the performances by Kiera and Matthew. Both portrayed their characters admirably in a short amount of time. As much as I like Colin Firth, I was moved and drawn more toward Matthew's portyal of Mr. Darcy!
I'm a fan of the BBC series. Maybe it's because they took their time in translating the book into film that it felt as if I was watching the book unfolding in front of me. In 1996, I was reading the book simultaneously while watching the episodes weekly and that made me prefer it to the Kiera movie.
Definitely prefer the BBC series, Colin Firth was just apt for the role of Mr. Darcy, and the Jennifer Ehle grasped all emotions felt by Izzy. Beautifully made
I cared for neither. I find that Lawrence Olivier and Greer Garson captured the roles rather well in 1940s version of Pride and Prejudice.

I totally agree!
I totally agree!
Most definitely 2005. Matthew MacFadyen was the perfect Mr. Darcy in my opinion. The whole movie was just fantastic! I've probably watched over fifty times by now :D
The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice is absolute perfection. Nothing else will ever come close. Jennifer Ehle was so convincing, I only found out recently that she is an American-born actress, not a British born actress! And from North Carolina, no less! Amazing! Jane Austen would be very proud.
I love the movie, but I've never seen the series so can't compare. I'll have to watch it now - I love Colin Firth.
Jackie wrote: "Some books just can't be done justice without the time that a miniseries allows -- loved the BBC miniseries (and wish someone would consider doing Harry Potter in that format!)."so agree with the Harry Potter idea!
Nothing beats the series with Colin Firth, although in my mind it will forever be mixed up with the Bridget Jones films!Prude & Prejudice

I'm pretty sure Helen Fielding had exactly that in mind when she named the character, lol
of course the lake scene where Mr. Darcy was all wet is better oops hahah... I mean the series is better 'cause they follow the script and what was written on the book:)
I actually watched the 2005 film first and then read the book,And just recently watched the BBC version. That being said, the BBC version wins, hands down. I didn't care a mite for Colin Firth's wet shirt, he portrayed Mr. Darcy true in words and manners, and Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie Bennet was absolutely delightful, made me love the character even more. The rest of the characters I loved as well, even Jane, she was so kind and sweet as in the book, except perhaps it would have been best to find a prettier actress. And Mr. and Mrs. Bennet! I kept laughing out loud at the silliness of the last and the sarcasm of the first, they were perfect! Just as portrayed in the novel! Truly, could there be anything better?
Colin Firth, most certainly. I saw the film when I was eight, read the book, then saw the 2005 version and thought they had just desecrated the movie. Watched the series and almost kissed it I was so happy. The 2005 version's Elizabeth was too giggly - she could have been Lydia - and I just didn't feel Darcy eminating from Matthew Macfayden, you know what I mean?
So a resounding yes to Firth.
So a resounding yes to Firth.
I love both in different ways. When I want to get the whole experience of Pride and Prejudice I always go with Colin Firth but if I want a "quickie" I pick Keira Knightly. Keira is also one of my favorite actresses and I think her co star Matthew Macfadyen is a fabulous Darcy, I think I like him better than Colin Firth! I feel the same way about the Jane Eyre movies.
whenever i think of mr. darcy, i can imagine only colin firth n no one else. he is d best choice for dis role. BBC series is much much much better thn d movie.i dont wanna compare kiera with jennifer. jennifer is d perfect elizabeth. i agree with Caz
There will never be another Darcy better than Colin Firth. He is so iconic that he played Darcy on "Bridget Jones's Diary," and was just as perfect there. Jennifer Ehle is much more realistic as Elizabeth Bennett, as are the rest of the cast more appropriate than in the MTV version. There could never be a more perfect smarmy Mr. Collins than the one in the BBC version. The Cliff's Notes version with Keira Knightly was a travesty for the attention deficit disorder generation.

I liked the 2005 film better than the BBC version. Colin Firth just wasn't Darcy at all. He was a good actor, but there were several things he just couldn't seem to pull off. I think Matthew Macfadyen did a better job at the role. I think Jennifer Ehle is a little better actress than Keira Knightly, but I think the 2005 version handled Lizzie's story better, it felt more true to the era.
And Mr.Collins was quite creepy in the BBC version, in the other he was very annoying and added some humor to the story, which was more true to the book.

Everyone keeps saying that Keira Knightly is Elizabeth; I think she is exactly the same in each role she plays. Also, I have so many problems with the costuming in the movie. I greatly prefer the series.
Collin Firth. I just liked that version better. He played a perfect Mr. Darcy i re-read the book and just kept picturing him. Also the lady who played Elizabeth was spectacular.
i prefer the series too, cause it's more faithful to the book, and colin firth it's sooo handsome ;) , i prefer him as Mr Darcy!!
The Collin Firth 95 one most definitely. The other did not have the time to make an authentic Jane Austen adaptation. It just didn't work. The scene in the new one where Mr. Bingley came into the room Jane was staying! That made me. I paused the movie and went on for a minute about how scandalous and improper that would have been and how if he cared for her reputation at all or was aware of society and the speculation caused to the servants. ... He would not have done that unless they we engaged or close to becoming so.
Yeah my friends most definitely won't invite me to their "Modernized Jane Austen Movies" movie night again.

I love how everyone thinks the BBc is better because "It stays true to the novel"....show me the shirtless lake scene in the book....I dare you
There never will be more right Mr. Darcy than Colin Firth.... NEVER!!!The only one who comes near flawless Colin's perfection is Sir Lawrence Olivier.... I saw his movie as a little girl and even though I didn't know the name of the movie or what it really was about I kept remember him and how awesome he was.... it wasn't until I was an adult that I found out he was actually Mr. Darcy!! Perfect.
Katie wrote: "I liked the film way better than the bbc series. I think Elizabeth in the movie is way more likable and charming. Also the film was just beautifully directed. I think it really combined the classic..."I agree with you. :)
I haven't had the chance to watch the series yet, but Jennifer Ehle's smile looked so painful, she was kind of old, a little bit chubby, and didn't seem like an intelligent girl (at all). LOL
Geena wrote: "I love how everyone thinks the BBc is better because "It stays true to the novel"....show me the shirtless lake scene in the book....I dare you"It may have added a few scenes that contribute to the built-up...but I see no problem in that, since ALL of the book's important scenes were there, it does stay true to the novel: the characters, the dialogue, the atmosphere are what they are in the novel, which is more than I can say for the 2005 version, which looks more Brontë than Austen. And it is not "shirtless lake scene" in no moment does Colin Firth take his shirt off in the miniseries...he dives in with his shirt on :)

Just watched the clip, Jesus Christ, was the woman pregnant or something?
Oh man! This is a hard question!! I love me some Colin Firth but I adore me some Keira Knightley. I thought both were superb adaptions and I loved how there were the differences between the two; it made it not the same type of adaption. But I think Colin Firth played the underlining characteristics of Darcy that were hinted in the novel more than Matthew MacFadyen's Darcy. But all in all, I really can't love one more than the other, but I would have to say if I could have had Colin Firth and Keira Knightley, than that's my choice! :)

Yep. As a matter of fact, she was pregnant.
Definitely BBC - Colin Firth was a talented addition who made the show worth watching. But, I have to admit, Kiera Knightley did a rather good job in the movie too.
Much prefer the miniseries with Colin Firth! The 2005 movie is painfully bad. I've tried to like it but it makes my stomach hurt every time I watch it.

They were kidding the audiences to have a pregnant woman playing a young girl, remember, it's not a minor role as Kitty or Lidia, it's Elizabeth!
The "fine eyes" turned out to have many fine lines under them.

Sorry, it seems I was mistaken. Apparently somebody else in the series was pregnant, not Jennifer.

She did look like a pregnant woman...
I love the BBC version because it is much closer to the book. I like both Colin Firth and Mathew McFadyen, but I think that Colin's Mr Darcy was much truer. I think there was more passion in the movie, but the relationship was truer in the series. I watch both on a regular basis depending on how much time I have to sit and enjoy.
I like both versions, but I prefer the 1995 Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle version. It is so faithful to the text. The viewer really gets to know all of the characters and be immersed in the language of the text. The 2005 Keira Knightly, Matthew McFadyen version is beautiful and rich and a great introduction to the world of Jane Austen for the uninitiated, but it skims over major plot points in the text. Wickham is barely a side note in the newer version, while he is so integral to the novel and 1995 version.
