I agree 100%! There is no other that comes close in my eyes.

Thank you Chelsea, this is a very thoughtful review. One of my favorite actors you didn't mention was he who played Mr Colins so perfectly.

I haven't really watched any other version besides the one with Keira Knightley, so I'm not exactly one to talk. But I loved the 2005 version. And the soundtrack was beautiful.

The 2005 movie had really pretty piano music.

Totally agree!

Mr. Darcy is a whole other story. For me the perfect Darcy would be if you combined Firth and Macfadyen. On one hand Firth marvelously played the pround side of Darcy, but lacked emotions for my taste. Macfadyen brought that soft side of our character to life. He did look more shy than proud sometimes, but not always. You could see he loves Lizzy.
But we can't forget the chemistry between Knightley and Macfadyen. It's unbelivable and just as I imagened it. They had that spark and you couldn't miss it. I mean the first proposal was one of my favourite scenes. As for the second one, I loved that he showed more emotions than Firth.
In my opinion both movie and series had great actors, but again I relate more to the ones in the movie. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are amazing! And I think that Rosamund Pike far better choice for Jane. Jane was supposed to be the prettiest girl in the village. And for my taste Pike was prettier than Susannah Harker.
Joe Wright did an amazing job directing the movie, though i still missed a few important parts of teh book. But we can't have it all! :)
I think David Rintoul, in another BBC production in 1980, was the best Darcy.

I totally agree, Inga. The 1980 version is Jane Austen come alive. I agree that Colin Firth is very sexy and a terrific actor, but he's not a true Jane Austen character the way David Rintoul was. For one thing, Jane Austen's characters never smolder.

The movie, as a soppy love story and nothing more, was good as soppy love stories go. But it is not even close to pretending to be Pride and Prejudice.
Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle...BBC...the best.

I totally agree!!! :)

"Elizabeth Garvie is the most authentic Eliza Bennett." I think everything about this production is far superior to the Jennifer Ehle version without question. Here is a YouTube clip from this version of Pride and Prejudice.

Almost every single character was pretty much, in manner and image, just the way I imagined.
Kiera Knightley embodies Elisabeth Bennet, of whom I only had a blurred visual of in my head, while reading P&P for the first time.
The light I see in her eyes is both satire and critical in claim,as well as a uninhibited joy she feels in some of the simplest deeds.
It retains the freshness and authenticity to the ambience, as well as refines and enlightens the edges.
It's a stimulation to the senses.
Ofcourse I really like the series too, because it's much longer, so I can sit back and cuddle in, and enjoy it to my fill, for hours on end,
But if I had to choose, I do prefer the 2005 Movie Adaption more, This is my unbiased opinion as P&P Lover.

Great summation.
I couldn't sit through the series. I tried, several episodes, but I couldn't abide it, even as a distraction while I was making jewelry.

:)

The BBC version is much true to the book and conveys its magic to a great extent. Not only the main characters are fantastic but also most of the secondary ones - Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Collins, Miss Bingly. The movie on the other hand is shallow and does the great book no justice. The only character I would possibly consider better in the movie is Jane.

I feel the same. First time I watched the 2005 I hated it. I was shocked; everything happened so fast and all the Bennet's girls were shallow and stupid, including Lizzie, she was nothing like the book. Moreover, in the movie, Darcy's first proposal (the biggest moment in the novel) was ruined for that almost kiss shown in there which would have been unthinkable in the book. However, after watching it over and over with my sisters, I have come to like it. It's not like the book, but the plot is the same and as a movie it has a nice soundtrack and some romantic moments of its own that are enjoyable (but had nothing to do with real P&P).

PS: Colin Firth is the best Mr Darcy ever!

I found after watching the 2005 version twice, I enjoyed it more than I did the first time, and each time I watch it it seems to get better - I would recommend to anyone to watch it more than once, and see if your opinion changes, since mine certainly did :)

Keira Knightley is much better in portraying Elizabeth as a lively, fun-loving, no-nonsense young woman. In the book, Elizabeth says for herself that she's often at the edge of socially acceptable (even if in a smart rather than stupid ways like her younger sisters) and Knightly does it better than Ehle, who just keeps a vague smile all the time and barely changes her expression.
Firth was fine but rather expressionless, too. For subtle expressing emotions, I preferred MacFadyen. And that lake scene... I'm a woman, but I thought it was quite stupid (especially considering how dirty the lake was). Funnily enough, many people complain about 2005 movie as not being historically inaccurate enough, but very few comment on that scene as being untrue to both the book and the custom of the period.
Sorry.

I am so glad somebody brought up the relationship between Elizabeth's parents! I was really bothered by how that was handled in the 2005 movie. The relationship between the parents highlights WHY Elizabeth wants to marry for love, not money; so by changing it they are changing her main motivations!
That being said, the 2005 movie is charming and watchable, and I do still enjoy it. The acting is lovely.
