JainL A couple of days ago I finished the book Pride and Prejudice and I loved it but i thought it was to detailed. I wouldn't blame the author because the time this book was written there used to be no T.Vs so the author needed to add all the details she could. I watched the movie as well and extremely enjoyed it and I personally prefer it than the book.

I agree 100%! There is no other that comes close in my eyes.

Lilac (Gemma) Cameron I have them both but I like the BBC miniseries more than the 2005 but I watch them both all the time and read the book most of the time too

Thank you Chelsea, this is a very thoughtful review. One of my favorite actors you didn't mention was he who played Mr Colins so perfectly.

Frances How could anyone not like Colin Firth? The PBS version wins hands down!

message 456: by Haley (new) - rated it 5 stars

Haley I must say that I quite prefer the 2005 film. I do feel that Keira Knightly was the perfect Elizabeth - smart, sensible, witty, charming. Rosamund Pike is the perfect Jane, and the woman who portrayed Mrs. Bennet (though her name escapes), did very well in her role. Not to mention, the film is aesthetically pleasing.

I haven't really watched any other version besides the one with Keira Knightley, so I'm not exactly one to talk. But I loved the 2005 version. And the soundtrack was beautiful.

message 458: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori The series with Colin Firth - hands down, no contest. He is Mr Darcy!

Jessica Nash DEFINATELY the BBC miniseries for so many reasons that I wouldn't even be able to fit in this box...1995 version all the way! I love the casting, acting, and general atmosphere of that series...such a beautiful adaptation...

message 460: by Laura (new) - rated it 4 stars

Laura Phelps The 1995 series was a good representation of Pride and Prejudice, probably the best.

The 2005 movie had really pretty piano music.

Rachel (APCB Reviews) Is it strange that I like the really old Pride and Prejudice movie that's in black and white?

message 462: by Elaine (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elaine One thing I disliked about the b&w version was the fashion worn by the women: totally inaccurate. Also, the mannerisms of the actors reminded me more of southern US in the 1860s than England in the 1810s. I didn't enjoy this movie.

Cristal (Professional Book Procrastinator) To me the BBC version with Colin Firth is hands down the best movie. I love it and watch it often.

Cynthiakay I definitely like the BBC version better......Colin Firth is Darcy...:) and I like the woman who plays Elizabeth as well...they are a good match

Laura Colin Firth! All the way. The 2005 version was a joke compared to the BBC version.

message 467: by Addie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Addie 2005. I watch it all over and over again. My fave movie. (ps- didnt even watch the series but now that I know of it, ill probably end up watchiing it

Francesca Moore The bbc series wins hands down. Also I am not a Keira Knightly fan so when I saw she was to play ELizabeth Bennett I nearly cried.

message 469: by Lora (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lora I prefer the movie because I think that Knightley did a fantastic job as Elizabeth. I liked Jennifer Ehle's preformance as well, but for me she wasn't sharp enough. For me Knightley is just like I imagened Lizzy to be.
Mr. Darcy is a whole other story. For me the perfect Darcy would be if you combined Firth and Macfadyen. On one hand Firth marvelously played the pround side of Darcy, but lacked emotions for my taste. Macfadyen brought that soft side of our character to life. He did look more shy than proud sometimes, but not always. You could see he loves Lizzy.
But we can't forget the chemistry between Knightley and Macfadyen. It's unbelivable and just as I imagened it. They had that spark and you couldn't miss it. I mean the first proposal was one of my favourite scenes. As for the second one, I loved that he showed more emotions than Firth.
In my opinion both movie and series had great actors, but again I relate more to the ones in the movie. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are amazing! And I think that Rosamund Pike far better choice for Jane. Jane was supposed to be the prettiest girl in the village. And for my taste Pike was prettier than Susannah Harker.
Joe Wright did an amazing job directing the movie, though i still missed a few important parts of teh book. But we can't have it all! :)

Sher❤ The Fabulous BookLover The series has more detail and Firth is so sexy in it! But I do love the 2005 movie!

message 471: by [deleted user] (new)

I think David Rintoul, in another BBC production in 1980, was the best Darcy.

message 472: by Inga (last edited Oct 18, 2014 06:00AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Inga Almost every single thing about the 2005 adaption was atrocious; from the casting to the set design. The cinematography was good, I'll concede that. The 1995 BBC version was much, much better. However, my favorite version is the 1980 one. To me it is the most faithful to the spirit of Austen's work and the actors are wonderful!

message 473: by [deleted user] (new)

I totally agree, Inga. The 1980 version is Jane Austen come alive. I agree that Colin Firth is very sexy and a terrific actor, but he's not a true Jane Austen character the way David Rintoul was. For one thing, Jane Austen's characters never smolder.

message 474: by Madeleine (new) - added it

Madeleine Stegall I call p&p 05 the fake p&p. It is filled with historical inaccuracies and none of the actors do their character properly. I mean, when did Jane Austen every say that Darcy was a shy, sad puppy dog who needed loving? Never! He was hateful, he was proud, he was prejudiced (um, title of the book...) he was a very disagreeable person, if a little tiny bit misunderstood. Elizabeth drew out the best in him, and through his love for her, he pulled himself out of his vices. MacFadyen is a sad puppy dog version of Darcy, and is absolutely awful. Don't even get me started on Kiera.
The movie, as a soppy love story and nothing more, was good as soppy love stories go. But it is not even close to pretending to be Pride and Prejudice.
Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle...BBC...the best.

I totally agree!!! :)

message 476: by Troy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Troy I enjoyed Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth. But let's at least agree that she is a very modern Elizabeth. Elizabeth Garvie is the most authentic Eliza Bennett. I suggest any uber-fans of Ehle watch the same scenes side-by-side, and then decide.

message 477: by Jean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jean Caroline I like many prefer the series, there seemed to be so much of the story omitted or changed in the movie... the acting was also so much better in the series. Great show, great book too.

message 478: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 25, 2014 03:44AM) (new)

"Elizabeth Garvie is the most authentic Eliza Bennett." I think everything about this production is far superior to the Jennifer Ehle version without question. Here is a YouTube clip from this version of Pride and Prejudice.

Violet I preferred the 2005 Movie Adaption, It was fluent and captivating, and I was amazed by how the genuine Austen essence came through, as well as all the most essential and vital events were beautifully portrayed and mostly accurate in its accounting. Especially considering the time restraint.
Almost every single character was pretty much, in manner and image, just the way I imagined.
Kiera Knightley embodies Elisabeth Bennet, of whom I only had a blurred visual of in my head, while reading P&P for the first time.
The light I see in her eyes is both satire and critical in claim,as well as a uninhibited joy she feels in some of the simplest deeds.
It retains the freshness and authenticity to the ambience, as well as refines and enlightens the edges.
It's a stimulation to the senses.
Ofcourse I really like the series too, because it's much longer, so I can sit back and cuddle in, and enjoy it to my fill, for hours on end,
But if I had to choose, I do prefer the 2005 Movie Adaption more, This is my unbiased opinion as P&P Lover.

message 482: by Jean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jean Caroline Well stated, perhaps I need to watch the 2005 Movie Adaption again... thanks I will.

Inactive I thought that the 2005 film was shot very beautifully and that the representation of the Bennet's financial situation was shown more honestly. I also thought the cast was excellent and the chemistry between Darcy and Lizzie was wonderful.

Great summation.

I couldn't sit through the series. I tried, several episodes, but I couldn't abide it, even as a distraction while I was making jewelry.

Madhuri_v BBC version with Colin Firth, hands down!

Katerina the BBC series hands down - I've watched it many times while the movie only once.
The BBC version is much true to the book and conveys its magic to a great extent. Not only the main characters are fantastic but also most of the secondary ones - Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Collins, Miss Bingly. The movie on the other hand is shallow and does the great book no justice. The only character I would possibly consider better in the movie is Jane.

+ geEkinTHepINk x Matthew all the way~!!!

message 490: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn I like both for different reasons. I watch the movie when I need a quick shot of P&P, and I love the casting in the movie. It is entertaining because of the pace. If I want to make a serious time investment and need book accuracy, I like the series. Firth is one of my favorite actors, and he is way more unlikeable (at first).

I feel the same. First time I watched the 2005 I hated it. I was shocked; everything happened so fast and all the Bennet's girls were shallow and stupid, including Lizzie, she was nothing like the book. Moreover, in the movie, Darcy's first proposal (the biggest moment in the novel) was ruined for that almost kiss shown in there which would have been unthinkable in the book. However, after watching it over and over with my sisters, I have come to like it. It's not like the book, but the plot is the same and as a movie it has a nice soundtrack and some romantic moments of its own that are enjoyable (but had nothing to do with real P&P).

message 492: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy The Colin Firth one. It was much better done and the other movie seemed rather rushed and P and P needs time to tell the story properly. I like Kiera but she didn't seem right as Elizabeth.

Do Your Reading Give me the colin firth version any day. It's one of those things where you can't perfect a classic. And to think people thought the Lawrence olivier version couldn't be perfected/remade!

Georgia Rose TV series all the way Jenifer Ehle was the PERFECT Elizabeth Bennet. Keira didn't even scratch the surface of her brilliance. She played her to immature and clueless and not like the strong heroine Elizabeth truly is. Also the failed proposal in the rain? Errr no. Didn't work and lost the tension between the two characters making it more romantic than beautifully awkward, which is what it should be. They also missed out my favourite line in the movie which is just a personal dislike. So yes I love the 1995 version and would rather watch all six hours of it twenty times over than watch the movie EVER again.
PS: Colin Firth is the best Mr Darcy ever!

message 495: by Ella (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ella I absolutely adore the 2005 movie. It is charming and utterly enchanting, the cast is perfect, it is beautifully made and easy to watch - I have seen it countless times and I do not think I shall ever tire of it. The BBC Series is faithful to the book, but there was something lacking that I can not put my finger on. The chemistry between Elizabeth and Darcy did just not seem to be there, and though I think Colin Firth is a fantastic Mr Darcy, I love the 2005 movie so much more.
I found after watching the 2005 version twice, I enjoyed it more than I did the first time, and each time I watch it it seems to get better - I would recommend to anyone to watch it more than once, and see if your opinion changes, since mine certainly did :)

Kosjenka 2005 version for me. I didn't particularly enjoy the BBC version because the acting was rigid and insipid, and conversation style unnatural - truer to the book, for sure, but greatly reduces enjoyment. The 2005 movie softens it a bit to a version that feels more human and that enabled the actors to do a better job.

Keira Knightley is much better in portraying Elizabeth as a lively, fun-loving, no-nonsense young woman. In the book, Elizabeth says for herself that she's often at the edge of socially acceptable (even if in a smart rather than stupid ways like her younger sisters) and Knightly does it better than Ehle, who just keeps a vague smile all the time and barely changes her expression.

Firth was fine but rather expressionless, too. For subtle expressing emotions, I preferred MacFadyen. And that lake scene... I'm a woman, but I thought it was quite stupid (especially considering how dirty the lake was). Funnily enough, many people complain about 2005 movie as not being historically inaccurate enough, but very few comment on that scene as being untrue to both the book and the custom of the period.
Sorry.

Tanesha series!! lol im soo biased. firth is the only mr darcy for me! : )

message 498: by Denise (new) - rated it 5 stars

Denise No contest...the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version. The script is closer to Austen's book and the relationship between Elizabeth's parents is more correct. Though, I have to say....Rosemund Pike is a superior Jane!

Mrs. Mac No contest here either. Definitely the BBC version (and not just because of Colin Firth... though I love him in it).

I am so glad somebody brought up the relationship between Elizabeth's parents! I was really bothered by how that was handled in the 2005 movie. The relationship between the parents highlights WHY Elizabeth wants to marry for love, not money; so by changing it they are changing her main motivations!

That being said, the 2005 movie is charming and watchable, and I do still enjoy it. The acting is lovely.

Denise I'm so glad someone agrees with me on the issue of the parents! Thank you!
