It might have been the first reason for reading it, but certainly not the reason for finishing the story. I respect your opinion as I do others. We all have different likes and dislikes. Let us not demean people for theirs but, respect them. We are a world of many shapes, sizes, colors and beliefs...it's what makes us all human and facinating. :D

Have a fantastic weekend all!!

Anna Don't like it, don't read it - ok, but how would I know whether I liked it or not without reading the book first? And having read this book, as I am a curious person who wants to check the newest trends, I believe that I am entitled to an opinion about it. An opinion which I want to make known to those around me mostly because I don't want them to accidentally endure the misery that is 50 Shades of Fucked Up (to my horror, the book has just been translated in Latvian). Also no book (and I've read a lot of them) has filled me with such negative emotions, and I feel like I owe it to the decent literature to name and shame James and her ridiculous lovers.

Ellen Totten I just ran off chapter 35 of Meet Fifty Shades Continued and I'm crying like a baby. It's where he lets Ana draw the boundaries in red lipstick. It's very emotional. The person writing this series really brings the scene to life.

Pauline Warren Not the best .... not the worst. I wouldn't read them again like some of my friends. Once is enough for me. Writing was fine. Lots of words used way to much but I think most readers don't care. Grey is just another man that none of us will ever know. I'm glad I read it. It is what it is.

Debra I bought the book when it first came out because I was a clothing designer in Second Life, where BDSM is HUGE (yes, in a virtual world), so super familiar with the fascination of this kind of sex. So this form of power is often acted out in these virtual worlds. Of course you can log out at any time, but people don't...they love this. Ok, so, with THAT idea, plus I'm a published romance writer, and wrote sexy books, I started reading the book. At the time, didn't know it was really going to take off. As I said before, somewhere here, I found the writing stilted. The actual sex was so boring, and didn't... erm, do anything for me. I didn't find it worthy of changing any batteries, if you get my drift. The story was...just not believable. Heroines today have moxie, they're smart and educated and plugged in. Our hero here is just...flat. I need to know WHY people do what they do--and this story just couldn't explain their motivations. But, hey, now she's a millionaire. Yay for her! Ok back to the OP question. People want to be in the loop...we're a society based on community! Who wants to be the only one at the party who hasn't read 50 Shades of Grey?

Ellen Totten Debra wrote: "I bought the book when it first came out because I was a clothing designer in Second Life, where BDSM is HUGE (yes, in a virtual world), so super familiar with the fascination of this kind of sex. ..."

In my humble opinion, the love story worked because Ana was a precocous virgin. Not every woman has round heels with moxie. (Thank God for that) What romance novels have you written? What are your protagonists like? I cannot see a man warming up to a woman with "moxie". It doesn't sound romantic at all to me. But, that's me. :)

message 1814: by Debra (new) - rated it 2 stars

Debra Moxie means the "ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage." I am not on Good Reads as an author, like most people, my real name is not relevant (but that is my pic!). In 2012 women are not generally precocious (look that word up, it's generally used as a term for a child) virgins (even virgins in today's world are educated in sex). An earlier setting maybe more believable for me, or if the author had flushed out the reason for her to be this innocent...far flung boarding schools, that sort of thing. Also, the writing really wasn't good, and I that opinion is consistent with many who have reviewed the book. The OP was asking why the story was popular and I deviated from the OP when I stated my other opinions. My bad, anyways...

I don't want to get into a word war with you, but precocious means exceptionally smart, ahead of age in understanding, advanced, aggressive, ahead of time, bold, brassy, bright, cheeky, cocky. I could go on and on. I too am a published author...mostly mysteries and recently romance/drama, (which is with my editor).I respect your opinion but, I thought Ana's innocence worked in this love story.James has had more kudos than pans, ergo her book sales.

This is what I don't understand about Ana this right here she is a virgin she has waited all this time to not have sex and then she meets Christian and goes out with him maybe 2x and she sleeps with him. Thats what turned me off with this series. I also want to point out He to me seems so obsessed with her afraid she is going to fall an get a scraped knee. He is so afraid to let her do anything with out him. She had even complained about that. It makes me sick to think that young women are thinking relationships like this are ok. I am sorry Christian Grey is not someone I would want my daughter to find. Oh and yea everyone is saying the reason he is this way is because of his past well if that is true then he is always going to be screwed up an he will always be that controlling person. He doesn't even let her shop for her own clothes or even get her own birth control. Not to even mention the poor grammar and the constant repeats EL uses through out all 3 books. I am not a big Twilight fan but she has said it herself that it was Twi based. I also recently read a blog where they compared scenes from both books the similarities are WOW change a few names and anyone can steal someone elses work. I have read over 3000 erotica books some good some bad an yes I have compared the sex scenes and I got TBH the bad erotica books the sex scenes were way hotter. Just my opinion

message 1818: by Kristi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kristi Hudecek-Ashwill The giving up the virginity thing with Ana and Christian didn't set well with me, either. But then I believe in love at first sight.

On another note, was she really mature enough to handle a guy like Christian Grey? She was just 22 years old and had gotten her first job which was with a company that he bought out just so he could control that aspect of her life, too.

I suggested that James writes another book called Fifty Shades of Grey: Ten Years Later. I want to know if Ana is still going to be putting up with his control freak ways and this strange sex life they have or if she's going to get tired of it, take the kids and run like hell.

Christian is really scary and just when I thought I couldn't take him anymore, she broke him like in the third book when she safeworded red and he freaked out. It put a human emotion in him that doesn't show itself near enough.

And I do understand him better now that I've read the blog written from his POV. You kind of get a feel for him that I wasn't getting from the books but he's still a scary dude and unpredictable. I wouldn't want to live like that, thinking I was going to get my ass whupped for rolling my eyes and having a smart mouth.

I guess I'm conflicted by the whole deal. I like the series then I hate it and then I'm telling somebody about it and they get interested in it then I'm posting here...yeah, I can't get my act together where this is concerned but I do know that the story has really stuck with me and I'm finding it hard to forget. And everybody is talking about it.

I find human behavior fascinating, too and I guess that's why I'm liking the blog so much. I like it better than the books but you have to read the books to understand the blog.

That's a great theory you have about Christian's father. To be 28 years old and make $100,000 an hour, you have to have a streak of genius in you somewhere. He's a gifted musician, a ruthless yet savvy businessman that dropped out of Harvard...yeah, he inherited something from his papa.

I could have done without the graphic sex and I thought a lot of it was gratuitous but I think you missed the point of the story. There's a lot more to this than sex. Did you even read the book or are you basing your opinion on what you've heard?

I'd heard a lot of bad things about this series and I was reluctant to read it but my sister talked me into it. I was ready to call it quits after the first book but she convinced me to read the second and then the third one I read without any prodding.

I have a life. I'm happily married with two kids and I don't think I'm a bore because I read a book series like this.

Hmm, I don't recall sex coming into it until later in the book actually - but I guess it might be all about sex.... if you flick through everything else just to read those scenes maybe!

Whilst I didn't like this book I do find it rather bad manners to insult the readers who did - each to their own & all that.

I did have an issue with Ana jumping into a sexual relationship with a man she'd only met twice when she's meant to be, not only inexperienced but almost completely oblivious/naieve about anything of the sexual nature. It was this, amongst other things of a similar ilk, that made me even more uncertain about this book.

Biondatina I have read both books, they are interesting but not as Grey's trilogy. Just nice...

Kristin (KC) Ellie wrote: "Has anyone read Gabriel's Inferno? I picked the book up today and it sounds very interesting."

LOVED Gabriel's Inferno! I know a lot of people think it's an erotic read, but it's not. It's romantic and poetic (especially book two)...and sexy, as well!

message 1830: by Linette (new) - rated it 4 stars

Linette McShane Forfar I really liked the books they arent award winning books but they were an easy read and at the very least an interesting concept. I don't necessarily think he was a jerky guy. He was flawed and had a weird way of dealing with his demons but he took extremely good care of her and worried about her more than most men do that don't want to whip or flog you. He was on the controlling side but I felt she did a good job of sticking up for herself and holding her grown. That part isn't any different than twilight being that this book is a twilight fan fiction to begin with before it was publish, but no one complains about that half as much as this book.

It's a controversal book and its stirring up just that for everyone. It served its purpose successfully, so for those who read it you either enjoyed it or you hated it or you didn't read it and the mere fact of the books existance urks you to death.Oh well enjoy whatever side of the fence you are on!

I would imply that I read the books (most of the way) to see what the hype was about. I didn't care for the writing style as it was unimaginative, nor did I care for the characters. Having been in more than one abusive relationship I would read Ana's reactions to things and remember myself cowering in corners because I had been reprimanded. Not caring for how that feels on a personal level, I didn't care to read about it. That is why I agreed with that particular comment. The way Christian would treat Ana, speak to her, or scold her reminded me of jerks I've been with and those guys made me feel ugly inside. It's from that perspective, also, that I haven't been able to understand or connect with this particular series. We all absorb art from our own background. This is what my background brings to these books. It makes me remember very ugly feelings I would rather forget.

Your point was well made. I'm sorry you had to experience such horrific treatment. My heart goes out to you. I hope the jerk is locked up in jail. Please don't get me wrong, but men, such as your partner or husband, are not the same type as someone who practices what people who are into kinky sex. They sign contracts and have agreements on what their sexual limits are. They use safe words. These people even have clubs they belong to that practice this type of sex. Personally, I think it's perplexing that people get turned on this way, but they do. I never knew anything about S&M or BDSM until I read this book and googled information. Your situation was very different and I can appreciate where you're coming from. I pray you are not with anyone like that anymore and that you can find someone who is worthy of you in a respectful way. God Bless!
