I got the $79 version and my computer programmer son-in-law took the advertisements off for me. So the Fire is backlit??? If so, I will not be getting one of those for Christmas!

I was the SAME way, at first! SOOOO against ereaders...I actually despised them for trying to replace beloved paperbacks lol. I loved the feel and smell of books and wanted nothing to do with ereaders. But now I love every single little thing about them as well as being able to purchase a book with the tap of a finger! I bring it everywhere I go, as well. :)

ME TOOOOO! When I bought my husband the Fire I was like, "pshhhh! I'd much rather keep building my lovely library of physical books." but then I started reading some on it and I was like, "HOLY CRAP. BEST. THING. EVER." I then persuaded him that I needed an e-reader asap! =P I got a cute little cover for it with a matching light! I absolutely love it!

Yup it sure is! It has an LED screen just like a computer. The Kindle Fire is an awesome tablet though for the price but it was really harsh on my eyes. I was going to get the normal Kindle as well, Mary but then I started poking around on the Kindle Touch at Best Buy and realized I felt more comfortable tapping the screen than pushing the buttons! Mine still has the offers but it doesn't bother me too much and I've actually bought a couple of things because of them. =)

LOL! I've seen that! Some of the 50 shades of grey memes are pretty funny.

Mary Ellie wrote: "MThank you so much! Which one would you suggest? One book that stood out in my mind was The Far Pavillion. It truly was an epic and dramatic love story. I loved Janet Daily and her Texas rancher series, Rosemary Rogers, Kathleen Woodiliss(?). There were so many, I can't remember all their names. I'd read an average of 2 or 3 books a week, (and I had a full time job). Now that I'm retired I might get in 2 or 3 a month. I belong to several writing groups and have found a love for writing stories (when I'm not playing golf). I picked FSOG up because I was curious and loved the story. I've found some of the best authors have had editing issues. It happens to the best. This is why I cut James some slack. It's her first attempt and she hit the jack pot. I'm happy for her. ."

I also loved the Far Pavilions. Great epic novel. It all depends on what you like. For historical, I would recommend Laura Kinsale's "The Shadow and the Star" and "Flowers from the Storm." Flowers from the Storm has a heroine who is a Quaker and a hero who was a libertine before he has a stroke. It is one of the most poignant romances I have read. The Shadow and the Star takes place both in England and Hawaii and has some wonderful historical elements about Hawaii. Her books are somewhat angsty. Another good historical romance author is Karen Ranney. She has a series of Scots' romances that are hit and miss, but her stand-alone titles are very well written IMO. Some of her good ones include: Tapestry, My Beloved, After the Kiss, and Upon a Wicked Time. The latter (UAWT) has a very BAD boy hero that you are sure cannot possibly be redeemed. I just love her writing style though...it is very descriptive and almost ethereal. Anne Stuart also has dark heroes. Her most famous historical is probably To Love a Dark Lord. Linda Howard, Rachel Gibson and Jennifer Crusie all write contemporary romance. Howard has extremely alpha male heroes. Crusie's writing style is very quirky and my favorite of hers is Welcome to Temptation. As far as epic, Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series is great. It spans the time frame from the Battle of Culloden to the US Revolutionary War (this is a time travel romance). Tell me about the types of characters, settings, etc. that you like to read about and I will give more recommendations.

That actually makes me happy!!!! Why shouldn't we be able enjoy porn too. Who cares if you watch it or read it. (not that I'm that into porn, I'm actually not) but if its ok for classy men, then why not classy women. Truthfully, I think Sex In the City is partly responsible too.

Well, I think women need to grab on to their own sexuality with both hands since there seems to be a political element that would strip us of it.

When I was in my 20's, I used to read a lot of Stephen King books. Those had also been said to be written at the 3rd grade reading level. In fact many many popular writers write at younger reading levels. And even now, one of my favorite books is "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak, which is actually published as a YA book. Guess that puts me back in elementary school, even though I've earned two bachelor degrees and a masters.

Jenna "There's a cat in the second pictures, in the third it's on the pile of rocks. Rocks are stones, that means heavy like ceramic that Bath and Sink and Toilet are of, But not so smooth"

that is one line there are others far worse

message 1469: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna i think this is gonna be one of those books i just have to push away and not read, im on page 13 and i had to struggle to get that far, its just fragments of sentances and its making it confusing and hard to keep up with the story

message 1470: by Mary (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary I was curious about reading levels and just put an excerpt of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" into the Fleisch-Kincaid Readability calculator. It came out 9th grade level. Now I need to find an excerpt of FSoG.

message 1471: by Mary (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary FSoG is 5th grade level.

Kristin (KC) That is awesome! What is this readability calculator, and where can I get one?? Lol

message 1473: by Mary (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary Kinsale is at a 9th grade level as well.

Jenna what was Room?

message 1476: by Mary (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary Pride and Prejudice is grade 11.

Kristin (KC) Thanks, I bookmarked site! Is there a way to select and copy words from ereader, though? I only see highlighting options when I select. Or do you do this on computer?

message 1478: by Mary (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary Stephen King's "The Green Mile" tops out at 11th grade.

I think it probably depends on the excerpt you put in there. IF we put in an entire book, the grade levels might change.

Jenna i like paranormal Romance, but im wanting something different i guess

Kristin (KC) What is the highest level it will register? Does it start giving ratings of college degrees as levels? (lol) Or does it stop at 12th grade? (Sorry for all these questions, I'm a real inquisitive person by nature...sometimes reaching "Uncle Buck" levels of consecutive questions:)

message 1487: by Rebecca (last edited Aug 21, 2012 08:25PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Rebecca Johns Kindle is fab, Ive been using the a kindle for a few years now. If you spend a little extra you can get a cover with a light which draws power from the kindle battery.
I recently bought a kindle Fire for my daughter, it is backlit, but the main reason I bought it was because children's illustrated books look much better than the black and white screen.
You can also load movies onto it. We do a lot of long country drives and the kids can watch a movie on the kindle fire when they become bored. It is essentially a tablet, and as far as tablets go, it is one of the cheapest on the market.

Yeah I know, I liked the coloured nook because of their selection of illustrated children's books, the animated books and the read aloud funtion. With a 5 year old learning to read I thought that would be great way to support her reading, so I was dissapointed that I couldn't get one.
