All I can say is, don't be so offended when people you know, family members, acquaintances, or coworkers tout their praises for this book or any other for that matter. Just consider the source and smile, and be happy for them that they found something that they enjoyed or that they are reading at all. You can take comfort that those in the literary circle will know the difference.

Jenna Karen,
just remembered to ask, did you read Father mine? in the BDB books zsadist and bellas books is it a short story or an actual book it was at the end of Phurys book on my nook i read like a few pages of the preview and was confused didnt know if it was a short story or if he got another book

I read Gabriel's Inferno and Gabriel's Rapture, and I know Kris did too. I really enjoyed them, yep I gave them 5*'s. It is a dark romance, which ties itself into the works of Dante Alighieri. It is in no way a BDSM novel. Definitely worth your time if you like romance.

Kristin (KC) I have a Nook tablet...Does anyone know what the major differences are between the Kindle and the Nook? My husband gave it to me as a gift, so I didn't do my usual comparative research, but the only things I found was that the nook has less of a glare, and the Kindle has faster Internet service.

It seems there are more Kindle users.

message 1413: by Nancy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nancy I think in general this series was really put up on a pedastle by many and so it set the expectations pretty high in various ways... some enjoyed it for the BDSM aspect and others just for the storyline.

I personally enjoyed all three books for three completely different reasons.

I'm not going to lie the first one intrigued me because of the sexual aspects... the BDSM and the arrangement Mr. Grey was proposing.

The second book I enjoyed because the development of the characters captivated me.

The third book I really enjoyed simply for the romance and to witness the evolving of Mr. Grey.

As some of you have mentioned already this book was never meant to be the most well written novel of all time so I don't see the need to get nasty over the writting. It's a novel. I have read quite a few and this is not the worst nor the best written one that I've read however I do think the book is worth the read if only for the experience of learning something new(i.e. BDSM lifestyle) or to watch a character grow from the very cold business man in the Fifty Shades of Grey to the loving and endearing father in Fifty Shades Freed. I would agree with many of you that the relationship is far from perfect but in the world we live in is anything perfect?

I thank E. L. James for writting these books as it got me back into reading which is something that I really enjoy and had essentially stopped doing it for the last few years.

Yes Jenna, I read it. It was a short story, or a novella. It was very good. It just expanded on Bella and Zsadist's story.

I looked at a Nook and Kindle when I was at Best Buy and I ALOMST got a Nook instead because of the built in light and I liked the look of the home page. I don't think there are huge differences though. I do prefer Amazon to B&N though so that was one of the reasons I bought mine. I also felt that the Kindle was more responsive than the Nook (at least the ones at Best Buy were).

Duchess Nicole Well said, Nancy! What are you going to read now!? I've just recently come to realize how much is out there. I, too, was re-introduced to reading. It's exciting to fall in love with it all over again.

Nicely said, Nancy! I feel the same way about all three books. I'm also happy that it got many people reading/back to reading.

Jenna- yes, Amazon does seem to have better deals and sometimes even more books available than Barnes and Noble.

Well after Fifty Shades I read Gabriel's Inferno & Rapture at the recommendation of a friend and I really enjoyed them both. I find myself enjoying the romance & cotemporary romance novels right now.

British people often use the term 'brilliant' when they refer to something as great or wonderful. My friends from London often use it.

Duchess Nicole I've been reading a lot of Kristen Ashley, who is another controversial author...poor editing and extreme alpha heroes. But I love her!! I've found a lot of indie and self pubbed authors here on GR who are amazing.

message 1423: by Nancy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nancy Duchess Nicole : Same... I thank my friend for introducing me to goodreads because I've found so many great books here that I would have otherwise never come accross. Definetly one of the most used apps on my Ipad right now!

Kris: I agree...

Duchess Nicole Oh, wow! I couldn't figure out exactly WHO she was attempting to offend, LOL! Maybe she realized that even those that didn't like the book wouldn't stoop to personal attacks. But man...there are some angry people out there!

I read a lot of romance, but then I read a lot of many genres - fantasy, suspense, sci-fi, horror, contemporary, classics, etc. In my lifetime I am sure I have read well over 10,000 books. This book is middle of the pack for romance or slightly below. Average for erotica (there is a lot of really BAD erotica out there) and of course it is not in the same category as classics. As I stated before, it had greater potential than its final product. It needed a heavy hand in editing, but I have read MUCH worse.

Duchess Nicole Eew, that just SOUNDS gross. Do I even want to know?

If you have not picked up romance in 20 years, then you need to revisit. I read the bodice rippers of the 70s and 80s and did not pick romance back up until a few years ago. The writing has gotten MUCH better and left the forced seduction/rape trope behind. Some of my favorite authors are: Laura Kinsale, Karen Ranney, Madeline Hunter, Elizabeth Hoyt, Karen Moning, Linda Howard, Diana Gabaldon, Rachel Gibson, Jennifer Crusie, etc. If you want a synopsis of any of their books, just let me know.

Not reading ahead in the comments, so this may have already been answered. Kindle is tied to amazon's ebook format and Nook is tied to Barnes & Noble and Booksamillion. My daughter and I went to the store and did a test run on all of the ereaders before we got the kindles. What I liked about the kindle is it is not backlit, so it is not like staring at a computer screen when I am reading. The pages are more "flat" in resolution so they look more like paper book pages. Just like Macs and PCs, people have their preferences but I am sure there is not that much difference.

Kristin (KC) Anyone read anything from Lavyrle Spencer? Her romances stories are, for the most part, historical, and not as action-packed the ones mentioned here, but they are such sweet and tender stories. One of my favorites is "Hummingbird."

I believe I have read Hummingbird and Morning Glory. I read so many that I sometimes have to look back at my list to remember what the plot was. Unfortunately, I have a tendency to pick up a book that looks good and then get it home, read a couple of chapters and realize I have already read it. That is why I started a list several years ago and why I originally got on Goodreads.

Kristin (KC) Too funny, Mary! And thanks for the ereader info. That's nice that the Kindle isn't backlit. Does it have that option for night-time reading, though?

Lor you have to buy a light for the kindle to read at night.

I have the same one, Jenna. But I actually like the simplicity. If I had apps on my Nook, I'd get sidetracked. GR is a bad enough time consumer. The only thing I don't like is the battery needs charged after every book :(

Thank you so much! Which one would you suggest? One book that stood out in my mind was The Far Pavillion. It truly was an epic and dramatic love story. I loved Janet Daily and her Texas rancher series, Rosemary Rogers, Kathleen Woodiliss(?). There were so many, I can't remember all their names. I'd read an average of 2 or 3 books a week, (and I had a full time job). Now that I'm retired I might get in 2 or 3 a month. I belong to several writing groups and have found a love for writing stories (when I'm not playing golf). I picked FSOG up because I was curious and loved the story. I've found some of the best authors have had editing issues. It happens to the best. This is why I cut James some slack. It's her first attempt and she hit the jack pot. I'm happy for her.
