I never thought of Pretty Woman either...but there you go, it's all about media coverage and who they like.

What about Freddy Kruger and all those horror pics? I'd rather watch a beautiful love story like FSOG.

I think we are still dealing in today's society with the whore/madonna complex. It is OK for men to be sexual, but not "good" women.

I didn't really skip over them completely... it just got kinda easy to skim over some of them. I read pretty much all the books word for word... but some of the scenes were short and exactly like previous scenes and it was easy enough to skim them and get the jist. I read most of them and even honestly enjoyed most of them for the mere fact that they were part of the story and I wanted to read the whole story. I was just making a point that yes there are a lot of sex scenes and some of them are very repetitive as others have stated, but they are pertinent to the story therefore worth reading for the most part. I actually didn't mean to discount any of the sex scenes... because even though there are a ton of them... they are part of the story and of Christian's past, present, and future so they matter very much to the story's plot.

Barbra- I read all three books and really liked them, but I skimmed some sex scenes in the third book. Especially the ones on the boat. They were very repetitive. I wanted more of the story! Obviously, the sex was a major part of plot, but after a while, I felt like I was re-reading the scenes. I can't see how that is detrimental to any story. I skimmed a few sex scenes and still know exactly what happened and realized the point of the entire story.

I agree that there was a lot of sex scenes, and I'm glad you associated the story with them. I just feel that if you skip over the sex scenes you dont get the way they lust for eachother and want for eachother. It changes a bit if you pay attention between books it gets more intense and then at the end more loving.

Barbra Kris wrote: "Barbra wrote: "Samiam wrote: "Barbra wrote: "I did end up skipping over several of the sex scenes based on the fact that they were so repetitive. I can see how some people assume this book is just..."

Well I'm torn on what I mean here... I mean it's pertinent to the story in the sense that the sex is a big part of the issue for Christian...BUT...there were a few too many sex scenes thrown in that didn't need to really be there. I found myself enjoying it when she mentioned a sex scene but basically skipped over it herself. I get it that there was a need for sex for both of them as well as a need for other ways of getting to know each other and dealing with their issues, but I did feel like it got to be just way to repetitive. So I guess I'm saying I can see it from both sides. Yes the sex was part of the story so I did read it but no there was not a need for sex every other page in order to tell the story. I'm with you.. I wanted more story too. That's why I started skimming sex scenes. It was like "yeah yeah I get it, now on with the story". I am a sucker for romance and the harder the path to the happy ending the better. I could have done with about a hundred less sex scenes between the 3 books though lol.

I get your point, but, like I said, I only skimmed a few. I didn't skip over it, just skimmed. I still knew what happened and I don't feel that the story was any less intense for me.

As much sex as there was, I don't feel like that was the most intense element of the story anyway. I felt it was Christian and Ana's emotional connection that was strongest.

LMAO!! Well then it probably would just be porn lol. There had to be a breather in between all those scenes to get some story told! I am actually looking forward to the movie/movies if only for the fact that I know they will have to cut out a ton of those sex scenes and just tell the story. But all in all it is an awesome love story and I really enjoyed it.

i agree with you this is one of the times im HOPING the movie does the book justice (by cuttin back on the over done and repetitive sex scenes) and focus on the story line and i get it yes sex is what made these books or atleast its what peaked ppls interest in it but yea less is better sometimes

Kristin (KC) Im looking forward to the movie, too! I mean, I was totally amazed by the first book bc the level of erotica was new for me. And EL did a great job with it! But I'm more of a "plot" lover lol. The sex should add to the story, not consume it. IMO...

I completely agree. The sexual aspect was quite enticing, but the emotional track was the hook.

Kristin (KC) Bee wrote: "i don't know about you guys but i was into these books due to the hot kinky sex. Sorry but not sorry."

Dont be sorry but not sorry lol! We all have our own likes. I loved the sex in it, but by the third book, I just felt like it was a little overkill. By that point, I was more invested in the story and had wanted just a little more of it. But I was totally into the kinky aspect. Like Jenna said, less is sometimes more.

William Amen! I really dug the kinky aspect as bizzare as his control issues were, but I got very wrapped up in there histories as well.

I was just about to comment on your profile bc I noticed u posted about it! Yeah, it's definitely a hard read and I can see where u feel that some parts drag. But i felt the story as a whole was beautiful. Definitely not for everyone. A lot of people thought reading it was pure torture! Will u be moving on in the series? I must warn u, it does not get any easier! If you didn't like the first, u will most likely not like the second.

William I'm unsure. I really am into the love story, cause I'm in touch with my feminine side! ;-). But some of the minutiae of their day to day lives gets a bit long in the tooth. Let's see how it ends!

Jenna, I've been wanting to read The Black Dagger series...I really like paranormal but I havent read any in a while.

Right now I'm currently reading Abbi Glines "While it Lasts"- I've been on a YA kick, although this one is hardly YA...I really like it so far :)

message 980: by Christine (last edited Aug 15, 2012 06:32PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Christine This is sort of off-topic, but not at the same time. To anyone reading this thread who hated 50 Shades and bemoans its success? I'd like to share a bit of advice I received long ago from Robert Loomis, a Senior Editor at Random House. He told me - that people bemoan John Grisham's success, the best-sellers as being bad, but those writers are writing what they know, their story, the best they can and only John Grisham can tell his.
And say what you will about him or EL James or Danielle Steele or any of the others...the fact they sell millions of books is why Random House can publish a literary writer or more nitch writer such as an Emily Praeger who wrote Eve's Tatooe and A Visit to the Footbinder's. The best-selling author makes it possible for less marketable writers to get published.

Denouncing any book is just silly. And counter-productive. Books are dreams and sometimes nightmares shared.

Christine Moved from romance novels to sci-fi horror - Under the Skin by Michael Faber and classics by Thomas Hardy - Far from the Maddening Crowd and Elizabeth Gaitskill North and South possibly...we'll see. I've always been a bit allergic to the 18th Century novelists.

Kristin (KC) Christine, well said! "Books are dreams and sometimes nightmares shared." BEAUTIFUL! I love it :)

I'm actually gonna agree with this too. I had different opinions on the writing throughout the three books. Sometimes is was incredibly cheesy, sometimes it was just ok, and sometimes it was actually pretty good. Definitely I think she has a lot of room for improvement as a writer, but it was the story itself that kept me interested and not the writing.

oh yea she def has room for improvement and with this being her first book im 100 percent certain she will get better no one ever comes out with a masterpiece the first try

Kristin (KC) I'm gonna have to agree with Jenna and Barbra, also. Loved the story but felt the writing was silly, at times. Yet other times, pretty decent-- Just not consistent enough. It was largely overlooked bc i loved the whole idea of the story. But there were some moments as I read where I kind of cringed a lil from the corniness :P

I'm not knocking EL's talent in the least. Im certain her future work will seem more professionally written now that she's been published and has gained experience.

Kristin (KC) Ellie- absolutely!

Even we, as readers, evolve with more experience. We learn how to recognize truly talented, as well as different styles of writing...and we find what truly suits our taste. When I look back at some books I thought were great, I sometimes wonder what I was thinking lol.

message 992: by Khandy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Khandy I heard about the book from friends and i have to say it has exceeded my expectations. i loved the way EL illuminated the plot and scenes in every chapter. Some sex books just get right to the point while this one explains in full detail. Yes, she has some moments where i cringed but i fully enjoyed the and completed the series within a week. i even recommended it to my boyfriend. I am sure E L next novel will be as good as Fifty Shades

message 993: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

I think it also depends on what stage you are in life. When I was very young I LOVED "Little Women." I decided to re-read it again in college and almost could not take the saccharine sweetness of it. Then I had my own children and read it to them. I recaptured my love for that book when reading it through the eyes and ears of my children.
