I'm not quite that far in, but am enjoying it too. Finishing a couple others then I'm diving in.

I wish I had some great story that involved something academia and fancy ... but mostly I found When Washington Was in Vogue because the spine is pretty and the title sounded nifty.
Longer story that makes me sound like less of a ditz:
While at Pasadena Central searching on a slow card catalog last summer (the library building* predates computers by several decades, meaning several of the catalog computers are in unique spots ... this particular computer has a shelf of books that's only a couple of inches above eye level), When Washington Was in Vogue caught my attention. I grabbed it off the shelf and read the front flap and, while it intrigued me, I was already close enough to my self-imposed limit on how many books to check out that I put it back and wrote down the title and author (Doesn't everyone keep a running to-read list in her purse?). After reading about the book and its history, I decided it sounded promising as a book club selection. So there was some thought involved ... but only after being entranced by the shallowness of completely judging a book by its spine.
*Interesting fact for Oxymorons: Myron Hunt, who designed Oxy's iconic buildings, also designed Pasadena Central (so it's really pretty ... if not always functional)
How old is Davy Carr? He seems so OLD to me, but then then I guess he actually might not be that old. Anyone manage to catch this dude's age?
Am about 150 pages in. Methinks I'll be cutting this one a tad close for the Aug. 1 deadline!

Just finished the intro, which is fascinating! I'm in my driveway, slathered in sunscreen and reading, while my husband fixes my transmission. Sounds about right!
Look forward to being back in the loop for this round.
Ashley & Julie: I haven't found anything yet on age of Davy Carr. Trying something different this time. Found some oldie moldy cassettes of our book at the library, and checked out the book too, so I can read and listen, just read, just listen. Been kind of a cool way to do it. I've gotten quite behind and thought this might be a way to burn through it a little faster.
Julie - Welcome back--
I'm hoping folks will be around for my pick in September. I'd asked people several months ago if they wanted to read a Vreeland or have me change, and you all wanted her. Last chance if you don't want a Vreeland. The book is quite good, and I've got some really cool supplemental stuff to send you that makes it all that much more interesting. I have some of your email addresses....will need the others so I can send you this interesting material. Makes the book so much more than it already is. If I don't have your email, send to me with a Private note. Thanks Carol

DAVY JUST SEEMS OLD BECAUSE HE SOUNDS LIKE GRAMPA GENE ONLY MORE SOPHISTICATED. REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE IN 1922, AND DAVY IS A WWI VET. AND HE'S EDUCATED! HE WAS "DRUG UP RIGHT" WITH CHURCH, RESPECT FOR YOUR ELDERS, AND MANNERS. THEY ARE INGRAINED IN HIS PSYCHE. I'S SAY THAT HE IS BETWEEN 25 AND 30.

I'm been super busy taking care of everyone else: Parents, nieces and nephews,my new grandbaby etc...
Currently helping my daughter move into her new house. :)
I'm hoping to start and finish this book next weekend.
