Ron was obviously a challenge to her from the start. He insulted her, mocked her and didn't believe her blindly.
He is a contrast to her personality in several ways. Hermione takes life too seriously, while Ron's relaxed. Hermione studies, while Ron is too lazy to do so. The list is endless.
They do have their similarities. They're both pretty argumentative, they agree on a lot of issues and they're both generally nice people.
I can see where the pairing comes from, definitely.

I think Hermione didn’t choose Harry because that relationship just plan wouldn’t work out. Ron always seemed more suitable and Harry just wasn’t that interested in a non-platonic relationship with Hermione. Also that would have changed the entire story so…
Eh never been a fan of Ronmione, personally I think it was forced. I love Harry Potter but romance never was it's strong point
For me it all started with book 2 when he saved Ginny
