I love his compassion, and the fact that if it weren't for him there really wouldn't be a story because all the Cullens would have died way back in the past so Bella wouldn't have met Edward

Well.. I'm a bit undecided, to me he is kind of too nice and a little boring and then there's the fact that he single handedly decided to play god with other peoples lives and turn them for his pleasure. Created a family of vampires whilst all the while claiming for the greater good??? Sounds a little selfish to me but then again that seems to come with the territory of vampires (Edward,, just a little selfish don't you think) Well anyway I don't hate him but can't say that I love him either, I am switzerland.

The story of how Carlisle and Esme met, were separated, and meet again is awesome, I agree with Alexia. I disagree with Jettcatt, because they were all DYING. And Edward's mom begged him to save her son. (Kinda like she signed a permission slip...) I doubt he could stand seeing anyone die, he's that compassionate.

I Love Carlisle. There is a softness and empathy in him that makes him so good as a foil for the normal vampire characterisation... He was always my favourite, no contest!!

I think he actually signposts the ease with which Bella copes in the last book... He showed how the change did not need to be a murderfest.

I also like that he is British!!!

well, it's shown that he's still tortured over the decision he made to turn others. also, I don't really consider "for his pleasure" to be the same as "to lessen his misery." he never got any sort of god-like thrill from it or anything...

Kirby I quite agree... Carlisle is the man Edward wishes to emulate, so if we take it that Edward is "good, but tortured" then Carlisle is just noble and the family he creates and nurtures to a "better vampirism" is his legacy and his atonement for his "crimes" (in his opinion!

I like that Carlisle is the philosopher of the series. His views on good vs. evil and redemption are very subtle, and SM never gets enough credit for including them in the books.

I love him because, he's hold on to his humanity quite well, he's kind hearted, compassionate,sweet...I adore him <3, He's so sexy, probably the hottest Vampire and doctor you'll ever come across, He's the most McSexiest Vamp everr lol Team Carlisle,,,oh and i can't get enought of his peircing gold eyes and sexy English accent,,,they make me melt!! <3 If you aren't on Team Carlisle than you really haven't lived XD

I think he's probably the most developed character in the story. Carlisle was definitely my favourite character.
