ABANDONED. Frontier times read in the 90s

I found this book in the library and loved it but I don't remember much about it because I read so many books that summer.

I just remember that it took place in the frontier days. The main character was a man traveling across the country for some reason. There may have been a trapper involved. I do remember the man has sex with some Indian woman and I think maybe she gets pregnant. I remember he tried to kiss her but she didn't do that because for her sex wasn't about the pleasure it was just about getting pregnant. I was young so that made an I pressing on me.:)
