Jen (geekybookgal) | 159 comments That's silly. E-readers are notoriously bad at formatting. I'm reading a Netgalley right now that the capitalization is all messed up, but I don't know if it's intentional or if my reader is doing it. I wouldn't diss someone for that though.

Would you let your kids read your books? At what age?

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Brooke (The Cover Contessa) wrote: "Would you let your kids read your books? At what age?"

My oldest daughter (almost 16) is actually part of a group I lovingly call the think tank. They are the teens I turn too when I need book advice. They help when I have title drama, they read my books and spread the word amongst their friends, they shape stories when I am stuck. And I help her writerly friends with their own writing.

My youngest (nearly 12)hasn't read the fiction as the subject matter is a bit mature. Though I'd let her read Lacrimosa at this point - it isn't really graphic, just violent and intense. My youngest has read my MG nonfiction, 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids; in fact, both she and her sister helped with one of the focus groups for that book and are helping with my current nonfiction, Redefining Normal.
I keep talking about writing a book that is more for younger teens and preteens. When I have time. LOL

Jen (geekybookgal) | 159 comments OK I have another..is Transcend going to be part of a series, or a stand alone?

Brooke (thecovercontessa) | 4025 comments Mod
Will you be writing more shorts between Libera Me and the third book?
How you decide on names for your books?

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Jen*Geekygamergal* wrote: "OK I have another..is Transcend going to be part of a series, or a stand alone?"

Transcend, sadly, is a standalone. BUT...as I've been editing I definitely have "found" a fabulous short that could extend the story, or at least present something different.
My teen wants it to be a series...but the end, well you'll see when you read it.

Who knows, right???

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Brooke (The Cover Contessa) wrote: "Will you be writing more shorts between Libera Me and the third book?

Good questions. I am not entirely certain if there will be a short in between books 2 and 3 - maybe. I believe there is a "story" there, so...yea...maybe...

With regards to titles...ughh...they are my nemesis. At least they used to be.
For the Requiem series, Lacrimosa was retitled by my agent (back when I had one), as she felt no one would "get" the title, least of all a YA audience. So I changed the title. And a few other things. When she told me she wasn't going to rep YA (she reped my NF at the time) I still went with her suggestions and looked for new representation. In the end, I had to change the name back. The title had meaning for the story - everything in my stories do. The setting, the symbols, all of it is planned and thought out. Including the title.
So, I went back to Lacrimosa. The titles for the rest of the series came from the same place Lacrimosa did - a Requiem mass. This story is shaped a lot like the mass, using the symbolism of transcending through darkness into light. (See, I am a serious nerd when it comes to writing)

My other titles, Transcend and some of my other works, come from the stories themselves - the over riding theme or emotional essence.
Transcend is about transcendence...moving from ignorance to acceptance, even when that acceptance is not what someone expects.

Long answer...sorry!

What title did she want???
I love how your titles have such great and deep meaning!

No apologies on long answers! I would not have asked if I didn't want to know.

When you are writing, who is the first person, besides yourself of course, to read your work?

I am so glad you kept it to Lacrimosa and I love the meanings behind the namings of all your books...it's beautiful just like the writing ... gorgeous :)

Brooke (thecovercontessa) | 4025 comments Mod
If you could pick a theme song for each of your fictional works, what would they be?

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Brooke (The Cover Contessa) wrote: "When you are writing, who is the first person, besides yourself of course, to read your work?"

Hmm...In nonfiction, Author Michelle McLean is my go-to person. She also reads the majority of my fiction before anyone else. We've been critique partners forever.

For Fiction, Authors Elana Johnson and Heather McCorkle are my serious buds! I read ALL of their stuff; they read all of mine!

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Brooke (The Cover Contessa) wrote: "What title did she want???"

After a LOT of drama, I originally pitched LACRIMOSA as A BEAUTIFUL MESS. Now, I LOVE that title too - just not for this story. So...
I am using it for a book I can't talk too much about...other than to say, I have a TON planned for 2013! Announcements on it all later this year. EEP

This one is tough, but I'll give it a shot. Obviously, with the requiem series, I pulled from the mass. So...
Mozart's DIES IRAE for
DIES IRAE (Requiem Series, .5) by Christine Fonseca
Mozart's LACRIMOSA for Lacrimosa (Requiem, #1) by Christine Fonseca
For Mea Culpa - I actually used Mea Culpa by Enigma to give me the "feel" of the demonic smoke...something that becomes VERY IMPORTANT in the upcoming books (yes, that was a hint!)
For Transcend and the newer works...I'm not certain.

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments I will say, that just as I pick titles for meaning, I choose songs for lyrics and meaning too...

Christine Fonseca (christine_fonseca) | 240 comments Speaking of titles, I think I told you all that I do have a new short coming in Winter Winter Wonders (Anthology) by Heather McCorkle - part of an anthology to benefit children's literacy.

Well, the title for that one is ILLUMINATI and is the prequel to a new series called the Apocrypha Series.

This series is a Bourne Identity meets Cassie Clare's Shadowhunters series about a race of humans known as Seers (yes, just like Lorelei) desperate to escape Azzaziel, a fallen angel hunting them in order to consume their souls and build a super-army of UnHoly to destroy the angels.

This particular story is set in 16th century Europe and ties in to Lorelei's story of how her mom died, bringing in some fun snow-angel mythology.

Can't wait for this one!

And since I am in a slightly divulging mood...let me just say this:
A smart, somewhat geeky girl + a fabulous boy (of course) and unlikely love interest. Throw in a little bullying, teen angst and a stalker unlike anything you'd ever guess. That is a Beautiful Mess.

What's not to love.... LOL!!!

Yes, there are a TON of Amazing authors contributing short stories to it. AND it releases in between books 2 and 3 of the Requiem series. YAY

Jen (geekybookgal) | 159 comments Well, I think there is a shortage of really good stand alones in YA, or maybe I just haven't found many. Sometimes it's nice to know the story ends and doesn't leave one hanging.
Novelettes or short stories are a great idea for those of us who will fall inlove with the story and characters and want more.Christine wrote: "Jen*Geekygamergal* wrote: "OK I have another..is Transcend going to be part of a series, or a stand alone?"

You already know what's coming in 2012, so let's talk 2013...
Late winter is when I will release a new short (if there is one) for the Requiem Series, followed by the last in the series in early Spring (Feb/March, I'm thinking.
June means the release of my new nonfiction, REDEFINING NORMAL - a self-help book for teen girls that focuses on resiliency and finding identity.
That is what is currently under contract. Though...I should have more news on that front soon. Like before September soon. And I will say that it involves new stories. Beyond that...must wait
