I got reminded now that we do not have really a thread for simple random book reading suggestions. You know, that one where you can simply post a link to a book you would like to read, because you've seen or would like to see the movie.

You still can post your suggestions in a Genre selection thread, whenever they are of some specific genre, like one link Ivana posted about movies based on memoirs.

Here's a Dispatches's post moved from Ideas and Suggestions, that reminded me of a need for this new thread:

Not sure if this is where to post this but here is a list of Books/film adaptations that pop into my head :

The Shipping News The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx
A Room with a View A Room with a View by E.M. Forster
The Mosquito Coast The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
An Angel at my table An Angel at My Table (A Women's Press Classic) by Janet Frame
The Age of Innocence The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
The Remains of the Day The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Empire of the Sun Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard

For starters !

Elena | 109 comments Hello , i'm not sure whether I got the right topic for this, but I wanted to nominate a few novels for potential future readings... Is this where we do that, or...?

♣ The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
♣ Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
♣ One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey
♣ Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
♣ For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway

Hahah lots of ideas...so I was wondering is there a thread where we are "future" nominating ?

Yes, all suggestions are great reading choices, thanks :)

For Monthly Reads we usually start nominations rounds at the beginning of each month, and for Quick Reads we have them once in two months. Those books you suggested would apply for Monthly Reads :)

So, next nominations thread will be open at the beginning of February, and would consider Science Fiction or Fantasy genre (for March, winner of the first Genre poll this year). According to that same poll, we'll have for April Epic and/or Historical Fiction.

message 8: by Elena (new)

Elena | 109 comments Ahh I see, that makes sense... So they would not belong in the science fiction category, but on the nomination thread for one of the following months i will nominate one of them.... :) Thanks...

Trista I saw "Water For Elephants" and read the book last year and both were great!

message 10: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) I just watched Water For Elephants today and I found it to be very good, even though I read the book several years ago. Movies are often a let down after a book is much enjoyed, but I, and my husband, did enjoy this one very much! He surprised me in watching till the end! Now that says something about a movie. And there were no snores coming from him either!
Reese and Robert were excellent.

message 11: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments I always enjoy the movie much better when I give ample time after I've read the book for some of the details to recede, then I'm not critiquing it so much. Glad you both enjoyed it!

message 12: by Emory (new)

Emory | 25 comments I saw Lore, a new Australian film set in Germany at the every end of World War II. It was an extremely powerful work, based on one of the three stories in Dark Room, The by Rachel Seiffert. This book was a nominee for the 2001 Man Booker Award.

The film depicts the journey of five children across occupied Germany, through the Black Forest to the Hamburg area, to become reunited with their grandmother. I really enjoyed it!

I didn't know it was a book! Movie was very.... interesting, if a bit creepy.

Blueberry (blueberry1) The Silver Linings Playbook
I wasn't sure where to put this and could rejuvenate this thread at the same time.

I read Silver Linings Playbook and watched the movie today for my movie/book club. The book was really good. I thought the movie was also very good though my other book club member thought the book was much better. I don't want to give spoilers away so will not go into details. But the movie, while changing things, did a nice job in staying with the theme and mood of the story. Highly recommended. Jennifer Laurence earned her Academy Award on this one, and Bradley Cooper his nomination.

Can you please put that review in the book's thread, we did it two years ago (wow, how time flies by!) , here: The Silver Linings Playbook ?

I liked the book and movie too, I think more the former than the latter. I am tempted to read it again :) (no-no, I must read new stuff!)

Blueberry (blueberry1) Done. Thanks for telling me where to put it. :)
Should I delete it from this thread? Wasn't sure since I would not be able to delete your following thread.

If you are interested in reading it, we can put it on our shelf next month as our spotlighted read? I won't be able to read it (I doubt my library has it), but I might watch the series. Maybe there'll be others who will read it too.

A. Datta (webmaestro) | 3 comments Excerpts from classic short story titled, Finally, translated from Bengali to English, written by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore listed below, inter alia:
"A romping non-conforming feminine nature bespeaks itself and pulsates unceasingly in the eyes and aspect of this girl like a swift free-roaming wild antelope and makes her vibrant face unforgettable."
"Her name had been associated with an amount of infamy. The menfolk called her moonstruck, but the wives of the village were worried sick by her feral disposition. She always played with the boys and looked down upon the lasses no end and she came across like a free-booting Maratha cavalry upon the village kids."
