Review: I have never read a Weather Warden book and I didn't know this was the first spin-off book. I really enjoyed it even though I felt like I was behind trying to figure out the rules of the world. I'll have to start the main series before I read the next one. The main character was very cold and distant and it took me a long time to get used to her, but I enjoyed the story very much!

Review: Ilona Andrews does world building like nobody else I've read. She continues to amaze me with her world and amazing and likeable characters. I loved how Declan just bullied his way into Rose's life. Georgie & Jack completely steal the show with the devotion to each other and their big sis. I just loved it! The only thing I would have liked was a little bit more romance in the romance.

Series: Blood Destiny
New Author: Yes

Lissa has just pulled life support on her husband and has gone to have her first drink ever at a bar near the hospital. The worst day of her life is about to get even worse. 2 vampires decide to make a wager on how long it will take for her to "turn" and then they will kill her to cover their folly. That is the beginning of this really interesting series. Lissa ends up turning much more quickly than the 2 vamps anticipated, lets herself out of her "prison" and literally starts running for her life. Oh and along the way she has to teach herself how to take care of herself now that she is a vampire. Along the way she makes friends with the Pack, blackmailed by said Pack, saves the "Grand Master", is on the vampire Council's radar. Lots of stuff going on in this one!!

First time author? yes

Review:Evermore by Alyson Noel is a great first novel in her Immortals series. The story is about a girl named Ever who after surviving a car crash that kills the rest of her family is taken in by her Aunt and tries to start a new life. Enter the new boy at school who is dark, mysterious and handsome but little does Ever know she is about to mixed up in a world she could never dream exists and will soon find out that maybe she was saved for a reason.

This was a great first novel to this series, I loved the story line I felt it was fresh and fun and was just different enough that it wasn't like reading every other YA novel out there, that tends to happen more and more these days. The characters were great fun especially Ever's quirky friends Miles and Haven. Ever and Damen's relationship started out kinda rocky but got better as the story went on and I felt like it was just developed enough in this novel that it will have room to grow in following novels. All in all this was a really good book and I can't wait to continue on with the series in the near future.

Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

Title/Author: Leviathan - Scott Westerfield
Series: Leviathan
Read: 1/16/13
Rating: ★★★★
First time author? yes
To-Be-Continued? yes

Review:
This is a steampunk novel with something more...fabricated Darwinian beasts. IMHO these beasts are the best part of the book. They are so creative and interesting. The mechanical beasts are interesting as well but the reader is not given as much detailed information on them.

In Austria, Prince Alek is left an orphan after the murder of his parents and runs for his life inside a giant mechanical being. As the only heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, his life is in danger from the Germans as well as his own subjects who disliked his father. Meanwhile in London, Deryn, masquerading as a boy, enters the military inside the Leviathan - a living flying beastie - mostly a whale but with many other animals fabricated together. A living breathing hydrogen balloon. On a dangerous cross-continent mission, the Leviathan enters neutral territory, Switzerland, where Alek is hiding.

The parts of the story with Deryn are more exciting than Alek's adventures (view spoiler) I can't wait to read Behemoth.

Control Point (Shadow Ops, #1) by Myke Cole
Control Point by Myke Cole
Series: Shadow Ops
Rating: ★★★★
Read: 11/01/2013
First time author? Yes
To-Be-Continued? Yes

Review: I stumbled upon this title because one of my favorite Fantasy author made a review of it. I've read more stories written by female authors lately than men....the fact that this story is written by a guy in the military also didn't hurt. I know nothing of the military life so I can't judge as for the plausible picture drawn in this book.

The premise is simple: what would happen if ordinary people suddenly developed magic abilities over the elements? All of a sudden your neighbor manifest abilities that are dangerous to himself and to the community. Who do you call when he does not report himself? You send special ops teams to kill the target. You get the military realism of Black Hawk Down with the social commentary and X-Men soldiers.

We follow Army officer Oscar Britton, with the military Supernatural Operations Corps, as the hunter becomes the hunted. He has always upheld the principles but now with a rare and prohibited magical power....it's die or agree to a deal with the devil: his own government.

It's not a rosy story at all. Oscar begins to question his views about life, what is socially acceptable, fanaticism and how the system is flawed.

It has a bit of first book syndrome but in all quite enjoyable.

Review: Detective Sergeant Rebus is very interesting. A man with a broken marriage, a young daughter and a past he doesn't want to talk about. All he wants to do is smoke, drink and work. And work keeps him very busy with a deaths of two young girls. Very good for a first book, yes it was a bit wordy and Mr Rankin had a liking for repeating phrases. The introduction was enlightening as well, as it indicated that this wasn't supposed to be a series. Looking forward to the next one.

Review:
I should have liked it. The cover was nice and a love triangle thrown in for good measure. The story was a little disjointed at times rending the flow uneven. The main flaw was that the characters were underdeveloped. The main leads characters had a lot of potential but they were not very consistent in their actions. I liked the theme, the magic elements Alexa's struggles and with her problems, maybe writing the story in something other than first person would have helped immensely.

I think the main problem for me was the Pack dynamics. I could not reconcile myself with a structure where the weakest link seems to be (view spoiler)

I must say that having read the two prequel...they characters are much better and I suspect that the quality of the overall series will improve so I'm not giving up on it just yet but I'm in no hurry to continue.

Review: Immortal Rules was a pleasant surprise. In a market of saturated vampire novels, Julie Kagawa manage to blend the dystopian and vampire genres together to create a compelling, interesting story about a girl who becomes a vampire - and chooses her own destiny. It starts off like a typical dystopian, but then turns interesting when she turns into a vampire. The characters she meets gives her hope in humanity.

Though I will admit that the first nine chapters were sort of slow with not much happening other than serious info dumping. I didn't understand all the Japanese terms but it didn't really matter in the long run. Once the thunder tiger was found, the action kicked up a few notches and everything started happening. I loved Yukiko and Buruu and absolutely hated Yoritomo who is one of those terrible dictators you read about who does whatever he wants without thought to anyone other than himself and desperately needs to be assassinated. Luckily there were lots of people willing to fulfill that desire. I can't wait to see where Kristoff takes this series next though it sucks to wait until September for the sequel.

The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next #1) by Jasper Fforde

Title/Author: The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde
Series: Thursday Next
Read: 3/9/13
Rating: ★★★
First time author? no
To-Be-Continued? yes

Review:
In this alternative England, people can jump into literature and characters can leave the story and enter real life. As the author puts it - a cross-fertilization between works of fiction and reality. Some of the character names are hilarious - Jack Schitt, Paige Turner and Mr. Stoker (who works in the vampire division). Very creative and funny.

Thursday Next, SO-27 agent is asked to help SO-5 on a highly confidential case because she's the only one who can identify the suspect, Acheron Hades. Thursday is chasing Acheron - a guy who has strange and unusual paranormal abilities - he can change into any person, become invisible, weapons cannot harm him, etc. Acheron has stolen Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit manuscript and now he is drawing characters into real life and killing them which removes them from every copy of Chuzzlewit in creation. When her inventor Uncle is kidnapped by Acheron, Thursday and her co-workers hatch a plan to rescue him and catch Acheron.

It's a great concept and I guess I would have enjoyed it more had I read Chuzzlewit or remember anything from Jane Eyre which I read 25-30 years ago. This was a little too literary for my tastes. The narrative just dies when Thursday actually enters Jane Eyre. I found this portion of the book incredibly boring. I liked Thursday and her co-workers, so I will give Lost in a Good Book a try before deciding whether to continue the series or not.

There were a few rather gross descriptions, but hey, she is a brain eating zombie after all. The romance didn't really win me over and I think could have been done a bit better, but all up I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Review: First when i started it, i was like another whining teen book, but after i got past the whine teen drama part, it was funny and enjoyable. There was quite many parts where i was laughing out loud, so im happy i decided to read it :)

Review: Great story that deals with the myth of the fallen angels from the 'Book of Enoch'. This book is an imaginative take on how the aftermath of these events affect a modern day village in England and its occupants.
Each of the many characters was fleshed out wonderfully, and had their own distinctive personality. The story was interesting and hidden under many different layers.
This was a fantastic read and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

Review: While I liked the overall premise of the book (it reminded me of Cat and Bones a bit), Jaz confused me often. I'm not quite sure if she thinks (view spoiler) is what makes her think she's crazy and makes her sort of talk to herself. Vayl has huge potential and I think he really likes her, could possibly even love her. I'll have to read more and find out ;)

Vlad was super hot in this book and it was so interesting delving into his world! Leila is also perfect for them, she's got lightning powers and the powers of premonition and he's got his fire hands and mind reading.

Cat and Bones did make an appearance too which was also a treat. Leila made some interesting observations about them, worth reading if you're a Night Huntress fan.

Review:
Meet Clara Gardner - part-angel with a mission (or Purpose as it's described in this book). Clara has a vision of a mysterious boy who she apparently has to save or suffer dire consequences. Since the boy (Christian) lives in Wyoming and Clara in California, Clara's family has to move to be on hand when the crisis occurs. Clara and her brother Jeffrey enter a new school and as most young adult novels go, Clara is not immediately liked -though her brother is- and she falls in with the "invisible" crowd. Teen angst doesn't play a big role in this story as Clara is way too busy training for her great rescue mission and learning to fly.

I liked Clara and her two friends Angela and Wendy. I really liked Tucker but I thought there was something off about Christian though I guess it could just be aloofness. I liked the slow leakage of angel facts though a few hints to the real purpose might have been helpful. I thought the mother's silence on her Purpose was bizarre but hopefully this is something that will become clearer in a future book. I'm also wondering what's up with Jeffrey and where exactly did he go during the fire?
