Review: Rhiannon is a funny smart a$$. Loved her.
Rhiannon's Law #27: When you're working in a gentlemens club and one of your dancers takes off their heels, alert the big guns; an ass kicking is on the menu.
She is a necromancer that is able to see dead vampires and talk with them. Disco (really Gabriel) is the head of his vampire family and he needs her help because recently vampires have been going missing. Due to a troubled childhood Rhiannon doesn't easily trust or love anyone ~ however Disco worms his way in and intends to stay. Can't wait to start book 2!!

Rating: ★★★★
To-Be-Continued? Yes
Review:
Not being overly excited by most YA paranormals, I was pleasantly surprised by this book.
It's the story of Cas, teenager and ghost-hunter and Anna, murderous ghost. There was a lot of violence and gore and interesting main characters. The story wasn't actually scary, but had a nice dark atmosphere throughout, that I really enjoyed. I couldn't put down the book for the first half, I was so drawn in, but it seemed to loose some steam towards the end. There was a certain point at which I thought the book could have ended, but we headed on towards another climax.

Review: I liked this book a lot but it was DAMN hard to get into. I had a really hard time following the storyline. This is the second or third time I've tried to pick this book up and finish it and it was just difficult. I didn't really understand what was going on (but neither did the main character) and it just seemed choppy. I'm willing to give the next book a try because I did like the ending (which I finally understood) and who doesn't love a Native American auto-mechanic turned cop? Will see how this series goes...

Review: Did not blow me away as much as I thought it would after all the hype. Yes, the concept is thought provoking and disturbing, particularly in light of the voyeuristic path our society has taken in recent years with Reality TV, but the pacing is problematic - plodding and bogged down with excessive detail concerning food, foliage and Katniss's internal ruminations.

Review: It took me a long time to even begin this book because it’s has more pages than I would normally go for. This one is around 700 pages and I was fortunate to find the audiobook at the library too. It is a rare book when you can’t put it down and your life stops because of it. It came to the point that I was reading the book and when I could not, listening to the audiobook, because I could not bear to have real life intrude. If it’s not the mark of a good book I don’t know what is.

The way the book was separated was clever in the sense that Kvothe would tell his life story to the Chronicler. The story narrative would go back and forth between the inn and Kvothe’s life. Whenever there was an interruption, I was waiting with bathed breath to know more. Kvothe takes you along for the ride on his epic story, from the hopes and fancies of a young boy to numerous tragedies. I have read few dark fantasy books but this one is a keeper.

Kvothe will tell his story in three days and the Name of the Wind is account of the first day. I am fortunate enough that the second book is already published because otherwise it would be pure torture to wait for the rest of the story.

Shadow Bound (Shadow, #1) by Erin Kellison

Title/Author: Shadow Bound
Series: Shadow
Read: 11/1/12
Rating: ★★★
First time author? yes
To-Be-Continued? yes

Review:
I don't usually like zombie stories but this one was cloaked. The author calls them wraiths but their behavior and demeanor screams zombie. Anyway, I liked the premise that Adam Thorne is trying to discover how to kill his brother, the wraith who killed their parents. Due to a paper she wrote detailing Shadowman, Talia O'Brien enters his radar. He proceeds to track her down and basically kidnap her. I found this disturbing especially when Adam decides he's smitten. Yeah I get it's a romance but the romance definitely took a back seat to the wraith investigation. On the other hand, the wraiths determination to get Talia (why?) and the governments response (WTH?) held me hostage. I enjoyed the suspense and action but the romance just didn't do it for me. For most of the book, Adam is a controlling jerk while Talia is a ninny. She hates him and then suddenly they're in love. It just didn't work.

I have the second in the series and will read it to find out what happens next. Maybe Adam and Talia will have a real romance and redeem themselves. Hey it could happen.

I never knew that people can be as fucked up as our lady in this story. Amazing. Even more amazing is Braden :-) I love the story of a male alpha hero falling for such a miserable, always in denial, just a girl type of heroine. And the happy ending was good. The other characters made the rest of the book slightly realistic :-). Four stars because I don't believe in fairytales no matter how fun they are to read. :-P

I took a little break from the PNR/UF genre, and read these instead...

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
"Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn

Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Both are crime/mysteries, my other favorite genre, and both were EXCELLENT.

Now, I'm starting up "Iced" by KMM, from the Fever World Series, and LOVING it so far! It's great to get sucked back into the Fever plot/world after a string of UF/PNR duds...

She seems too eager to take life and don't value others life, but as the story goes on she grows and i start actually liking her. She starts valuing life more and i feel she thinks before she takes a life. She is not blindly killing people because of her orders. It was intriguing book with lot of spying and intrigues.

Review: Like most HUGE fans of KMM's Fever series, I was a little uncertain if I was going to like the book. I didn't dislike Dani in the original Fever series, I found her cute and funny, but I was worried that "all Dani, all the time" might grate on my nerves.

Dani turned out to be an awesome narrator / main character, though. KMM did a great job of building her character and making readers understand WHY Dani is the way she is. Sure, all the "dudes" and "fecks" got annoying at times, but for the most part, I found Dani awesome and hysterically funny.

I loved the other characters as well. I wasn't sure what I'd think of Ryodan at first, but he grew on me as well. Dancer is a perfect love-interest for Dani. (At least, I HOPE he's her love interest. Ryodan or Christian, no. But Dancer & Dani would make a great bad-ass geek couple!) Christian was a little irritating at times, especially his romantic/sexual feelings toward Dani, considering she's only 14. But I felt for him as he lost his humanity, and the cliffhanger with the Crimson Hag (not giving away any details) made me want to know what happens to him.

Once again, I've been completely sucked into KMM's Fever World and cannot wait for the next book to come out! (The only problem for me is that I read the original Fever series after all the books had already come out, so I didn't have to wait ... Now, waiting for the next book in this new series, I'll be going nuts!

I didn't particularly like Jemima for a large part of this book. She seemed rather distainful of the nuns and the convent and it was only in the last chapter that she endeared herself to me.

Review: This is the first adult contemporary novel by an author I've fallen in love with this year. I normally stay away from most contemporary romance books (especially adult books, I totally don't mind sex in books, but I need a story beyond just jumping into bed with each other), but I really like her and heard good things about it so decided to give it a chance after sort of hating the 50 Shades books. This book was great, maybe I just don't read a lot of purely romance books, but it didn't seem to have all the cliches I tend to see in these books, and the characters were great.

Review ~ I loved this book. For a YA book this one was really good. Karou is a young art student who knows multiple languages. She gets sent on "mysterious" errands all over the world for the "demons" (as we would call them) who have raised her. She is unaware of her past. Until she meets Akiva a handsome but deadly fallen angel. Laini Taylor has a fabulous writing style that makes you feel as if you are right there with the characters. I love the way she writes, and her characters are hilarious, seriously between this and the other book I read of hers I have been laughing for a few days straight. Kiss of Pride (Deadly Angels, #1) by Sandra Hill

Title/Author: Kiss of Pride - Sandra Hill
Series: Deadly Angels
Read: 12/11/12
Rating: ★★★
First time author? no
To-Be-Continued? no

Review:
The Seven brothers (Ivak, Trond, Vikar, Harek, Sigurd, Cnut and Mordr) each committed one of the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride) and were punished by God to become vampire/angels-in-training for 700 years with their sentence extended for every non-Christian act/thought. This is Vikar's story and he has been a vangel (yes that is what they call themselves) for 1162 years. I guess he's a really bad boy! His current task is to renovate a rundown castle in Translyvania, Pennsylvania for the use of all vangels in the fight against the Lucipires (Lucifers vampires or demon vampires). Their are some rather humorous laugh out loud spots in the book which I guess is needed to overcome the heavy religious feel of the story.

I absolutely loved Sandra Hill's viking romances (5 stars all the way) but this book just didn't work for me. My biggest problem with this book was the whole religion thing. It didn't mesh well with actual events. They don't use the Lord's name in vein, they pray every morning, they aren't supposed to have sex without marriage first yet they have near-sex (yeah right) and they are irreverent. They call Archangel Michael, Mike, and Gabriel, Gabe and Rafael, Rafe. Yes I understand it's supposed to be humorous but it just doesn't mesh with the whole religious feel to the book. I got heartily sick of the proselytizing about sin and redemption and crimes against God.

There was also way too many references to Sookie, Twilight, Anne Rice, etc. These were nonstop and irritating - name-dropping at it's worst. Many things were just overlooked or skipped. Like the actual fighting - the Seven go off to distract/fight the Lucipires and come back a few days later and that's it. WTH? Alexandra's ex-husband and child were murdered by a drug lord and though she's pretty much dropped out of life for two years, this event that changed her life is never discussed. One of the Seven is captured by the baddie Jasper and (view spoiler) yet he returns as if nothing has happened and it is never discussed. Again WTH? These are the points in a story that draw the characters together as a team and yet here they were just ignored. The Seven are time traveling vampire warriors and their missions are mentioned once (9/11, concentration camps, bin laden etc), it's noted how devastated they are by these events and then never mentioned again. It seemed more like name dropping to get a reaction but they served no purpose at all to advance the story. Honestly I expected more from Sandra Hill. This is a series I won't be continuing.
I have the second in the series (?) and will read it to find out what happens next. Maybe Adam and Talia will have a real romance and redeem themselves. Hey it could happen.

The writing is smooth and immersing although there is some unnecessary repetition of plot points - perhaps the author thinks that her readers have a short attention span and need to be reminded of something they read 20 pages before.

Charity and Josh have good chemistry and their romance is engaging without the silly misunderstandings that usually turn me off this genre. That said, Charity is somewhat judgmental and her tendency toward jumping to conclusions based on surface appearances is very irritating. Josh, on the other hand, is a perfect combination of sexy vulnerability and fierce determination.

Overall, a good start to the series and the secondary characters are sufficiently interesting to continue on to the next book.

Review: New York City, set 100 years after the Great War between humans and Warlocks/Witches, is populated by all sorts of supernatural beings now living amongst the humans freely. The world-building is eerily similar to our modern day world.

The main protagonist Gage is a renegade Warlock and owner of a tattoo parlor. Those witches and warlocks have elevated themselves to the levels on Gods, raining their brand of evil on humans and supernaturals alike. Having been snatched at a young age by warlock recruiters, Gage’s moral sense was never bent during his training and why he bailed out. Obviously, Gage tried to help a young lady with a tattoo which started all his troubles. His good deed landed him in hot water and while he tried to correct his mistake his nemesis is out to get him.

I’m curious to see how this series progresses. The idea of mixing potions with tattoo ink can create lots of interesting opportunities.

Review:

Lara Nance is a new-to-me author and I can honestly say I will be reading more of her work. My first thought on finishing this book was "I wonder how long it will be until the next one is out, if it isn't already..." and I'm going to find out as soon as I finish typing this!

I have a tendency to split Steampunk books into two types - 1) books that rely heavily on machines & inventions and 2) those that use technology to enhance existing plots. I would put this story into the latter category, even going as far as to say it's a mix of mystery and adventure.

Lady Arabella or Belle is a likeable character, she's a strong woman that stands up for what she believes in even if it means going against societal norms. She is a nice mix of strength and innocence which gave a refreshing touch to the story. As we join her on her journey to save her kidnapped father we meet a very diverse and interesting group of characters, there are lots of twists and plenty of action along the way. The ending sets the scene for the next book perfectly and I can't wait to join them on the next leg of their adventure.

I just remembered I forgot to post Novembers

Review: (I haven't finished this book yet, but will be done by the end of December, so I wanted to get my monthly review in.)

So, I just finished up "Lover Reborn" by JR Ward, and "Lover at Last" doesn't come out till March... so I need something to fill my bad-ass vampire lust till then.

So far, I like Lara Adrian's writing well enough. Lucan and Gabrielle are a decent couple, the love scenes are steamy, the plot moves along fairly quickly, and overall, it's pretty good...

That said, there's nothing *outstanding* that's really grabbing my attention. I'm not sucked in from the first chapter, the way I always am with a JRW or KMM book.

I've heard the Midnight Breed series referred to as a BDB-wannabee, and I can definitely see the similarities with the BDB series. It also reminds me - mostly in writing style - of Larissa Ione's Demonica series.

Overall it's decent, and I'll probably check out the next couple books in the series. Seems like it'll be a good "filler" series to read while I'm waiting for another favorite to come out.

Charlotte, did you give 1 star for the cover? Just had to read the blurb after your informative review. LOL.

Since when does a 20 yr old police recruit get posted to a remote location and then have to solve gruesome murders? That should of been your first clue! ROFLMAO

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 557 comments Yes, the one star was really for the cover. What can I say? I panicked because I needed an author that started with O to help me finish an A-Z challenge. It only cost me 77p, I'd have been really upset if it had cost more than that.

Review: The world building was very well done and I could picture all of the different creatures and places. I loved Kio and his snarky comebacks. His relationship with Dylan was one of my favorite parts of this book. Some parts were a little wordy for my tastes, but definitely a series I will continue.

Review: What an interesting creepy twist on the original. Mitchell Turner has a secret ~ once a month he turns into a monster (Hyde). He has incredible sex one night with a woman that he actually wants to see again. Eden wakes up in bed with Mitchell and starts to freak out. Eden has a secret as well she turns into a monster too (Chastity). Add in an overly helpful assistant at Mitch's office. A live in "boyfriend" with Eden but they have never "done" anything into the mix....along with some cryptic emails from people unknown; bodies turning up dead and you have for a really good book. Book 2 is supposed to come out sometime this month.

Review:
Good story, if a little typical. Classic girl gets roped into marriage plot but her husband's a dragon. What I liked about it was that unlike many similar books, the heroine did not keep sleeping with her husband even when she was supposedly hating him. I also liked that even though the dragon was supposed to be a dragon, he acted his age and behaved like a lovestruck teenager would.

To-Be-Continued? HELL YEAH - already have the next one on my kindle.
Review: This has been sitting on my bookcase for a couple of years now - some reviews had put me off reading it, because of the world building. Well, there was certainly a lot to take in, but thats because once it started - it didn't stop!!!! I liked it, ALOT. The only thing that stopped it from being a 5/5 was the whole thing with Mircea (view spoiler).
