Irene | 4580 comments I was thinking about some of our comments early in our reading of this book. We were likening it to Romeo and Juliette and Fiddler on the Roof. It turned out not to be either. I kept anticipating a Western reaction. The characters kept me guessing, in large part because the motivations and expectations and assumptions from which they were operating were just enough different from my Western perspective to lead them to what was unexpected by me. Yet, underneath that, the common humanity was so strong that I could understand everything they did.

Stacie | 27 comments Came across this story this morning. I had no idea there was a sequel in the works - or maybe not! According to one of the articles I saw, "A Suitable Girl is expected to move the action from 1950s India to the present day, where we catch up with heroine Lata, now as a grandmother matchmaking for her grandson."
