Stacy (stcyct) | 66 comments I just post-it-ed (totally a word!) out the sections...I feel like I will have quite the sense of accomplishment reading up to and discarding each post-it. At least that is what I am telling myself...though honestly it is a pretty quick read so far.

Stacy, that is EXACTLY what I do. I have a post-it note stuck to the last page of each section, with the date written on it that I need to read to that spot by. I love ripping of and throwing away those post-it notes.

And I love your word...post-it-ed!

message 56: by Meg (new) - rated it 3 stars

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Me too! This book is huge!

message 57: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Good idea. I am going to do that.

message 58: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I am so upset, I ordered this from Better World Books and since there was 15% off if you bought five books I got some books from series I was working on. 9 books in total. I got everyone but this one. I sent them a message but no reply. I may have to start this from the library now.

Ooh...I didn't think to write the dates on the post-it's! What a good idea! My husband thinks I'm silly enough having a book full of postings taking up residence on the coffee table...I wonder what he's going to say when I start writing on them with a big fat marker.

Your husband will probably just start ignoring your book pile, as my husband does!
(you will see I not only have a post-it-ed copy of Suitable Boy, I also have a post-it-ed copy of Arabian Nights!)

message 64: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Sheila I need to know how to post it? Do I tag the end of the section and put the date for the next section? Sorry I have never done it.

I base my post-its on Meg's schedule, which I will copy here and add my notes:

READING SCHEDULE
Read up to 3.9 to begin discussion

so I put a post-it note at chapter 3.9 in my book (which was on page 149 in my hardcover copy), since Meg says to read up to this point to begin the discussion, and the date on that post-it note is Aug 5th, because Meg says...

August 5: discuss through 3.9 read up to 5.8

So, with my post-it dated Aug 5th, I know I need to read the book till this part by Aug 5th to discuss it.

My next post-it note is on chapter 5.8 (page 258 in my book) with the date Aug 12, because I have to read through to this point by Aug 12th for the next part of the discussion, which Meg says is "discuss through 5.8". Etc. Etc.

August 12: dicuss through 5.8 read up to 6.27
August 19: discuss through 6.27 read up to 7.35
August 26: discuss through 7.35 read up to 9.7
September 2: discuss through 9.7 read up to 10.20
September 9: discuss through 10.20 read up to 12.6
September 16: discuss through 12.6 read up to 13.14
September 23: discuss through 13.14 read up to 14.12
September 30: discuss through 14.12 read up to 15.21
October 7: discuss through 15.21 read up to 17.10
October 14: discuss through 17.10 read up to 18.1
October 21: discuss through 18.1 finish the book

As long as you don't re-post it with a changed schedule...because then I would have to re-post-it it! LOL

message 69: by Marialyce (new) - added it

Marialyce I started and the names wow! Being a terrible name person I am in deep trouble haha

Seriously though, it is not bad and Meg, you will appreciate as I am that the first part is about a wedding. (we both can sympathize with that!) although (view spoiler)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 130 comments I started reading A Suitable Boy a few months ago but put it down because I didn't have anyone to read it with. I was excited to see that this is the next "chunky"! And I love the Post-It idea! I love Post-It's and this gives me a chance to use my I <3 Nerds stickies that I got at Target dollar spot a couple of weeks ago!

Argh! Ulysses is haunting us! LOL

message 73: by Marialyce (new) - added it

Marialyce Oh no....not Ulysses! Well, maybe at least we will know what the author is speaking of.......but then again?...

Irene | 4581 comments Just assure me that there is punctuation. LOL! Need to finish the monthly read for August before starting this one. I have too many books going right now and need to bring somthing to a close.

message 75: by Meg (new) - rated it 3 stars

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Irene, closure is good!

As for Ulysses, it is a snippet but made me chuckle. You will find that as you read and/or watch movies there will be many Ulysses references.

I am enjoying the book so far. And, it is readable and I am understanding what I am reading. What a relief!

I love how Ulysses has changed our standards for books. Now we are happy if we can just understand what we are reading! LOL

I do agree this book is very readable though. I started last night and had no issues, other than flipping back to the family tree several times to try to keep who was who straight in my mind.

I also admit I got a chuckle out of the "A Word of Thanks" poem from the author at the very beginning of my book before the table of contents, especially the last two lines. :o)

message 78: by Marialyce (new) - added it

Marialyce It is quite readable, I agree and thank goodness. What a relief that it makes sense.

Ulysses does get into lots of things right..I guess you can always refer to it and since only 10% understand it, you will be pretty sure that whatever you write will be ok for the other 90%.

message 90: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Wow, so I had not received this book in my initial package of books. They sent me out a new book and when I opened the package it was Mexican Architecture of the 16th Century, frustrated I emailed them again and they said they didn't have the book and gave me a refund.

Today in the mail I received the book. What a journey to get this one. But I have it and I can finally start reading!

message 91: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments Yay, Vicki! I just got mine also. Still haven't committed for sure to reading this just now, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

You all weren't kidding about weightlifting. I didn't know this one is longer than War and Peace!

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments Has anyone found an online glossary or a really good reader's guide for this book? There are so many words that are unfamiliar. I'm wondering if anyone has a source?

message 93: by Marialyce (new) - added it

Marialyce https://www.bookrags.com/checkout/?p=...

however the cost is 13.99

so far I have found nothing that is free/and/or worthwhile

message 94: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments Thanks, M. I recently bought the bookrag for Prodigal Summer, and not thrilled with it. More than anything else, I'm just looking for a glossary.

message 95: by Meg (new) - rated it 3 stars

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I always recommend cliff notes, it seems to help a lot, at least it was terrific for Ulysses and a few other chunkies. It is free, good for main ideas, and they do some analysis

Welcome Vicki! I am so glad you got it, you see it is meant to be.

message 96: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I guess I am meant to read it, when I got the email yesterday that said they were refunding the money, I felt the opposite. I am glad to have the opportunity to join in.

I tried googling that, but couldn't find it, so I assumed there was no Cliff's Notes for it. Did you find it, Meg?

message 100: by Collin (new)

Collin | 197 comments I stumbled upon this big, thick book a while back while browsing the shelves of Barnes and Noble, and for some reason it has been on my mind since. When I saw it was a top vote getter, I've been trying to stay out of this thread...it's been hard to! I even stopped back in B&N to read the first few pages. I didn't buy it... I keep wavering. I don't know if I would be able to keep up and I don't want to commit to it and fall behind.

I thought searching for a digital version when amazon didn't have one would turn up something... No such luck, the only thing that I did find was there is supposedly a sequel coming in 2013. Thought you guys would want to know :)

Anyone else worried about being able to keep up? I suppose I need to make up my mind! It's almost too late to wait on a used copy to arrive and it was $22 at B&N.
