Gabriel I linked everything. I linked the cover page so people can see the cover and maybe perhaps passed it in aisle in a bookstore. People still go to stores with books, right?

The Paris Wife was our April/May 2012 read already: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

Feel free to nominate another book though. Please make sure to use the 'add book/author' link on top of the posting box so your nomination can count.

message 61: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I would also like to nominate These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. It's been on my 'To Read' list for a while!

There's nothing wrong with linking the bookcover to your posting in addition to the linking the title. The problem with only the bookcover is that it takes longer to make the poll. The person has to scroll over the cover to see the title rather than being able to cut and paste it into the GR search box. Also, you can't see the author well sometimes with the cover so many times if the title doesn't show up right away we end up having to click on the bookcover to get the information. It's time consuming when there are many nominations to go through.

One other thing is that it does slow some people's browsers if there are a ton of covers linked and it sucks when you are on an iPad or Nook because you can't hover over the cover like you can on a regular pc or laptop with a mouse.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I don't want people to think we are being OCD about it just because. We do have reasons.

I think the Aztec conversation tanked mostly because the book was so long and so violently and sexually explicit that it turned readers off.

Jennings' novel The Journeyer, about Marco Polo, is an ebook.

Is there a certain list from which we're nominating? And is it okay to nominate one's own book?

I agree with Victoria that the fact that it was pretty difficult to find was a key factor. If it was readily available then the length probably isn't as big of a problem, but from what I could tell in the thread, it seemed that by the time people found a copy, the discussion time was over (and then they decided to move onto other books --- at least that's what happened to me).

That being said, I guess we just factor into our voting that longer books may not have the participation that shorter more readily available books will. We will have our own mini- Rock the Vote ;-)

message 73: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureenbranham) | 49 comments Some of my favorite books have been nominated! These Is My Wordswas particularly a favorite of mine. I would like to nominate Ride the Wind, the fictionalized account of Cynthia Ann Parker who was captured by Comanche Indians as a young girl and was raised with the tribe. Although published in 1982 it is available on Kindle.

message 75: by Vivian (new)

Vivian LeMay In a fit of shameless self promotion, I nominate The Last Lord of Paradise by Vivian LeMay. A six generation family saga series, all quick reads. Available as a Kindle ebook, in the US and the UK.

Thanks,
Vivian

There's no list and yes, you can as long as it's HF.

Honestly, I was surprised that Aztec had won the vote. I didn't see an ecopy or audio copy before I voted and I knew the papercopy was difficult to read. I had passed it up in many library sales for that reason. Yet people still voted for it so we went with it.

We contemplated officially extending the read for 2 months because of the length, but decided first to check out participation. If there were quite a few people then we would've extended the discussion, but it seemed like there wasn't much interest so we decided to move on. The thread remains there though if anyone still wants to continue reading or wants to discuss it.

You all can nominate and/or vote for longer books. We are really flexible about changing the group read schedule as long as we see interest/participation in the thread.

Edit to add:
Also, remember that we have the HF Discussion Folder so if there is a book that interests you and you are looking for a buddy or buddies to read with you can start a thread there. I just mention that in case you don't like the monthly group read choice. :)

In that case, I will shamelessly self-nominate Helen's Daughter by Laura Gill. Available through Kindle, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble in the US and UK.

message 79: by Elise (new)

Elise (Geordielass) Erm... not to dampen everyone's enthusiasm, but don't we have enough books here for 6 months' worth of nominations?? How much longer is this staying open?

OK - all the eligible books have been set up on a poll: http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/67891

The top 5 books will be put into a run-off poll to determine the group read, so vote accordingly! ;)

message 82: by Laura (new)

Laura Gill | 116 comments Just wanted to thank the five readers who voted for me. It was really nice of you to give this self-published author a chance.

message 83: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments We've tried sending out the following broadcast message out, but unfortunately GR's messaging system is not being cooperative. I apologize if members get this twice:

Hello all,

It's come to our attention that there's been some very suspicious activity regarding the July/August Group Read Polls.

We've looked into it, and it seems clear to both Becky and I that there's been quite a bit of poll manipulation, using what appears to be over 30 accounts whose only activity on the site was joining Goodreads, then joining Historical Fictionistas and voting for The Assassin's Wife in one (or both) of the most recent polls.

This has been reported to Goodreads for review.

We want to be very clear: We will not allow cheating or poll manipulation in any way in this group. If we suspect or find that has been the case, as we have in this situation, the book will be disqualified, offenders will be removed from the group, and we will report suspicious activity to Goodreads staff as necessary.

This is very disappointing. We feel that we are very supportive of Goodreads authors, and this type of situation makes us reconsider whether we should continue to be so.

The replacement poll has been posted here: http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/68164, and will remain open until 11:59pm Pacific US time on July 6th.

Becky & Jackie

Garth I love the election intrigue! Thank you for coordinating all this.

message 85: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Zink | 11 comments I did join the group and then I looked over all the books and voted for The Assassin's Wife. I joined the group because I want to read more historical fiction and need help with good recommendations. I am afraid that it must have been one of the votes that looked suspicious! :) Sorry about that. I will re-vote. Quite frankly, all of the books look great though! Thanks!

message 86: by Jackie (last edited Jul 05, 2012 10:09AM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Valerie, you have no need to apologize. You weren't even one of the accounts that came up. Besides, just from quickly looking at your profile I can tell you are a legit user unlike the other "users" in question.

Phew! Thanks! That just sucks that people are doing these kinds of things, and it really is too bad because the book did look good! :)

Heather | 2 comments I have a great recommendation for the book after this one...

message 89: by Alana (new)

Alana White (httpwwwgoodreadscomalanawhite) | 21 comments Becky, I have a question...I'm on a list wherein an author asked all her Goodreads friends to vote for her book for a group read. (I assume these are people who are already on GR, but mayhap not on that particular thread.) Anyway...how does that sit with you? I thought about contacting her and telling her that might not be a good idea, but backed off. There is a fine line here, I suppose. I'm sure this author doesn't dream that she may be doing something "wrong." Does Goodreads have an established policy authors could refer to be sure they are not crossing any lines? Sorry if this has already been discussed here recently. And thanks as always...

message 90: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Alana, I can't speak for Goodreads, I can only speak for my groups. I definitely don't think it's appropriate to advertise outside of a group and ask for votes.

Campaigning WITHIN the group and saying why the book should be chosen is fine, but I don't agree with asking outsiders who had no prior interest in the group to come and tell it what to read.
